Walt Disney has brought one of its most lovable characters to life using AI and deep reinforcement learning.
People at Disney have brought Olaf, a hugely popular character from the Frozen franchise, to life.
The Olaf robot has been brought to life using artificial intelligence and deep reinforcement learning, enabling it to mimic the characteristics, mannerisms, and movements of the lovable snowman.
The video shows a self-walking Olaf seemingly understanding commands and engaging with other people.
There are already animatronic characters in Disney parks, like the BDX droids from Star Wars.
However, these robots only mimic and simulate movements from the movies. In this case, OIaf seems to have a life of his own.
“To make Olaf as authentic as possible, the team used a branch of artificial intelligence called reinforcement learning, pushing the limits of hardware to achieve the creative intent of the artists,” Disney said in a statement.
Disney’s robotics development team is based in Zurich, Switzerland, which has become a hub for robotics and AI.
The entertainment giant has teamed up with ETH Zurich to bring some of the most beloved characters to life.
Where can we see Olaf?
Olaf will soon waddle out to meet guests at the Arendelle Bay Show in the World of Frozen, a new immersive world coming to Disneyland Paris in 2026.
Olaf will also have limited-time special appearances at World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
Disney has also released a video discussing the creation of Olaf within the Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development in Zurich, Switzerland.
So, if you can’t wait to meet Olaf, you can watch the little snowman in action here.
