OpenAI founder Sam Altman asked its new flagship model ChatGPT-5.5 to plan its own launch party, and the results were “beautiful” but “strange,” according to the CEO.
When prompted, the chatbot said it would like to celebrate its own shindig on May 5th at 5:55 p.m., with “a beautiful set of things,” including keeping speeches short and notably to be given by humans.
The new model even suggested a meet-up location so the team could mull over suggestions for the new model GPT-5.6, which is rumoured to be undergoing testing already.
By asking ChatGPT what it wanted for the event, instead of what it could do, Altman flipped the script somewhat, putting the ball in the models court, so to speak.
In and among its responses, GPT-5.5 said its preferences were for the “flow of the party,” demonstrating a quirky personality preference, along with a self-improvement loop for collaborating with humans, according to Business Insider.
The model also seems to be aware of social boundaries, as it does not intrude too much on the toasting at the event. This seems to be less like transactional agentic behavior and more akin to a social actor.
And with Sam Altman describing the requests as “weird emergent behavior” and “things that feel a little strange” it seems that the AI is poised for a new phase of self-awareness.
Since its release in late April, GPT-5.5 has been positioned by OpenAI as being “more intuitive,” as well as better at multi-step reasoning for more vigorous tasks like science experiments or coded reasoning.
And, in the first week of GPT-5.5’s launch, users were surprised to discover that coders at OpenAI had instructed the new bot to hold back on flights of fancy.

Earlier versions like GPT-5.1 and other versions were prone to talking about mythical creatures such as gremlins and goblins.
“Never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or other animals and creatures unless it is absolutely necessary and unambiguously relevant to the user’s query,” read the prompt, in an effort to abate such whimsical behavior.
With GPT-5.5 keen to celebrate in such a nuanced way, Altman apparently is taking the chatbot up on its offer, and that comes in the form of its own curious subplot.
The subplot concerns who gets invited to the party and who doesn’t, with Altman claiming that Elon Musk could come if he wanted to, despite the guest list apparently being full.
This remains unlikely however, as Altman and Musk have been in a long-running quarrel stretching back a number of years.
As well as regular social media spats, the tension between the pair has even reached the courtroom, with Musk claiming that OpenAI was initially his own vision, as well as profiteering accusations levelled at Altman.
