What is resume.io?
resume.io is an online platform that helps job seekers create professional resumes, CVs, and cover letters. It offers over 20 ready-to-use resume templates you can customize to suit your career goals.
The platform also includes AI-driven tools that guide you through the resume creation process. These options are ideal if you're just starting out or want to tailor your resume to specific job ads.
resume.io also provides a Job Tracker tool to monitor the positions you applied for, interviews, shortlists, and job offers. Other features include AI-powered interview prep, a US salary analyzer, and access to current job ads.
During my tests, I was able to create complete resumes in under half an hour, with endless customization options. However, I don't like the company's marketing claims, like being "39% more likely to get hired" or earning "8% better pay." These percentages hinge on many factors, and a solid resume is just one piece of the puzzle.
resume.io can benefit job seekers across all industries, whether you're a student, a career changer, an experienced professional, or simply looking to refresh your resume.
Pros and cons of resume.io
Key features of resume.io
resume.io offers all the necessary tools to craft polished and compelling resumes and cover letters. Here's an overview of the key features that could help you land that next job.
Professional templates
resume.io offers 20+ templates you can use to create your resume. It categorizes them into a few groups:
- Simple
- ATS-friendly (Applicant Tracking Systems)
- Modern
- Creative
- Professional
You'll see a few templates popping up in various groups, though. For example, Modern and Creative overlap.

When creating a resume, you'll also see how many users picked each template. You can then go for the most popular option or try to stand out with an underused layout.
With so many choices, it's easy to pick the right template for any industry. You can go as casual or as professional as you want. However, I personally missed a few quirky layouts offered by Novoresume.
Cover letter builder
resume.io can generate quick cover letters and combine them with your resume in a single PDF. The cover letter builder has the most user-friendly interface. The screen is split in half – you edit on the left and see the immediate results on the right.

You can apply any resume template to your cover letter as well. I recommend picking the matching layouts to keep things professional. You can also play around with different template colors.

resume.io's cover letter builder helps you complement your resume by providing personal flair and answering why you're the right fit for the job.
Customization options
resume.io lets you tailor your resume for specific job ads. All you have to do is paste a link to the job listing and let the AI do the rest.

You can switch between templates as much as you like, pick different colors, and change line spacing. Oddly enough, you can't play around with different fonts.
For extra personalization, you can add various sections like hobbies, courses, and internships. If the pre-made sections don't match your needs, simply create a custom one.

Finally, the layout of the templates is fully customizable as well. Simply drag sections up or down to create the perfect resume for your needs.
ATS-friendly designs
ATS is a program used by employers to manage the recruitment process. It can automate various tasks, such as sorting, scanning, and organizing job applications. Most importantly, it can reject resumes that lack specified keywords.
resume.io offers 4 ATS-friendly templates, and I recommend picking one of them if you know a recruiter is using ATS.

Staying ATS-compliant affects how well your resume is seen by the hiring manager. Optimizing for ATS – for example, using relevant keywords or simple formatting – can improve your chances of getting noticed.
Export and sharing options
After finishing your resume, you can export it in PDF, DOCX, and TXT formats. The cover letters are only available in PDF and DOCS.

Being able to export your resume in various formats is important for a lot of reasons, but mainly because employers have different preferences and format requirements. Although ATS software doesn't always work well with PDFs, PDFs keep original formatting across all devices. In short, multiple export options allow for greater flexibility in your job application.
resume.io pricing and plans
resume.io offers a few pricing plans that only differ in subscription periods. In other words, they all share the same premium features.
Plan | Pricing |
Free plan | $0/month |
7-day trial | $2.95/month |
1 month | $24.95/month |
6 months | $7.49/month (billed $44.95 once) |
1 year | $6.24/month (billed $74.95 once) |
Technically, resume.io has 4 pricing plans. However, you can't buy the monthly package directly. You have to get the 7-day trial, wait for it to expire, at which tune time you'll automatically switch to the monthly plan.
That said, the monthly subscription’s pricing is very unfavorable when compared to the 6-month deal. It's a similar approach to what Zety is doing, and I don't recommend it. On the other hand, I like the free plan, even though it only lets you create 1 resume.
Without going premium, you can only download your documents in TXT format. Other benefits include unlimited resumes, free resume critiques by HR experts, AI-powered job interview training, and more.
After a thorough analysis, I see resume.io as a budget version of Novoresume. On the other hand, its cost is similar to Canva's pricing, which is a much more powerful tool. So, although I don't think resume.io is expensive, I believe its competitors are offering more at similar prices.
resume.io: user experience
Based on my online research for this resume.io review, the biggest complaint is the practice of auto-subscribing users to the monthly plan after the paid 7-day trial. Indeed, charging people $24.95 without notifying them their trial is about to expire definitely isn’t popular with customers.
On the other hand, users praise the final look of their resumes and the simplicity of the entire process. They also like the variety of templates and the help provided by the AI assistant. Speaking of which, some users reported long-winded and fluffy AI-generated text, and I agree. I'm not even sure what describing me as a "dynamic cybersecurity analyst" is supposed to mean, practically speaking.
Users also highlight the platform's intuitiveness and ease of use. They report saving a lot of time crafting numerous versions of their resumes and comparing them to find the best fit. Feedback on customer support quality is mixed. While some users report quick and effective service, others described extremely negative experiences.
Overall, users praise resume.io's ease of use, customization options, template selection, and AI assistance. However, they don't appreciate being auto-enrolled in the monthly subscription, overly elaborate AI text, or instances where the customer support team wasn't at its best.
How to use resume.io
With resume.io, you can start building your job-seeking documentation in a few simple steps:
-
Create an account. resume.io's website will start crafting your resume right away. You'll be met with a series of prompts – like name, email, work experience – and all you have to do is fill in the blanks. If you don't want to enter your info manually, you can link one of your accounts and let resume.io pull it from there. I don't recommend this since linking your socials to third-party services is not a good cybersecurity habit.
-
Choose a template. You can choose from 20-something different templates and customize them according to your needs. When you visit the site and click the My Account button, you'll see an immediate prompt to pick a template. After finishing the first resume, you can create a new one by going to Documents > My Resumes > Create New, and the system will again prompt you to choose a template. You can switch templates of the existing resumes by clicking the Select Template button at the top of the editing screen.
-
Customize your resume. After completing your first Resume run, you can edit almost anything about it. You can add or delete text, move the sections around, customize each section further, add more info blocks, change the template and color, use AI to improve your resume, and much more.
-
Export or share. To export your resume, click the Download PDF button at the top right corner of the screen. The 3 dots next to it open up a menu with options to export as a DOCX or TXT file. The same menu appears in the cover letter editor, but you can't export those as TXT files.
resume.io alternatives
There are numerous reasons why you should explore all the alternatives before investing in any single product. In the world of resume builders, these factors can include better customization, higher compatibility with ATS programs, pricing and features, more industry-specific templates, and flexible export formats.
With that in mind, let's compare resume.io with some of its competitors:
- Zety has fewer templates than resume.io but offers more customization options. It's a bit more complex and has fewer features because it focuses heavily on resume quality. It has stronger ATS optimization, and it's cheaper than resume.io. In this comparison, I recommend resume.io to casual users who need quick professional resumes. However, if you need a highly customized keyword-rich resume for competitive roles, I'd go with Zety.
- Canva is a popular graphic design platform that can create resumes with amazing visuals (think thousands of templates, customizable everything, logos, icons, and shapes). In terms of pure aesthetics, resume.io can't get anywhere near Canva. However, Canva's breathtaking visuals will be overkill in industries like finance or law. Furthermore, complex designs could be a problem for ATS. So, if you just need a visually attractive resume, I recommend Canva. However, if you want to pass ATS, you're safer with resume.io.
- Novoresume is my favorite resume builder based on extensive testing. It's slightly pricier than resume.io but also better in every conceivable way. Its free version actually lets you download a 1-page resume, which is a huge benefit. Premium users can pick between 12 fonts, 74 color themes, 20 backgrounds, and countless templates. Novoresume also pays more attention to ATS, and the final result is polished to perfection. So, if you want the best resume builder out there, I recommend Novoresume. If you want a good alternative on a budget, go with resume.io.
Final word on resume.io review
Based on my in-depth testing for this resume.io review, the platform does a good job as long as you're purely after a quick, professional-looking resume or cover letter. If you want stunning visuals, endless customization options, and bulletproof ATS compliance, I recommend tools like Novoresume.
During my tests, I was impressed by how quickly I was able to generate a passable resume, but passable really is the keyword. To meet my quality standards, the end result still needed heavy editing and optimization. I also liked the interface’s intuitiveness and user-friendliness.
On the other hand, I found little use for the Job Tracker tool, links to current job ads, and salary analyzer. Although I appreciate all the support materials and expert guides, there's just too much on the site, which can be confusing for new job seekers.
As mentioned, I don't appreciate using the expensive monthly subscription to take advantage of users who didn't cancel their paid trial. The templates look very much alike, and some visual variety wouldn't hurt. The AI writing tends to need a lot of editing, and I'd like to see more ATS-compliant templates.
All in all, resume.io is a decent tool, but it has some obvious problems. None of its flaws is an absolute deal breaker, but with so much competition out there, its use cases are quite slim.
