By far the biggest difference between Contabo and Hostinger VPS is the pricing and the resources included. Both providers are considered to be in the middle of the VPS pricing spectrum – around $5.00 to $7.00 per month for a basic VPS server. However, Contabo’s entry Cloud VPS 4 plan comes with 2 to 4 times more resources than Hostinger’s entry KVM 1 plan – both for just a little more than $5.00/month.

The conclusion is that with Contabo, you can start hosting virtually anything with the entry Cloud VPS 4 plan for $5.28/month (2-year subscription). Meanwhile, with Hostinger, you would need to pay ~1,5 to 2 times more to match the same resources – the KVM 4 plan with 4 vCPU cores costs $11.69/month (2-year subscription).
Performance
To test and compare Contabo vs Hostinger performance, the Cybernews research team conducted a number of tests and monitoring with both providers. Below I discuss the results for Hostinger and Contabo’s uptime and server response time monitoring, disk speed (IOPS) testing, and network performance.
The performance testing was conducted with both providers’ entry VPS plans:
- Hostinger: KVM1 plan including 1vCPU core, 50GB NVMe storage, 1Gbit/s network speed limit
- Contabo: Cloud VPS 4 plan including 4vCPU cores, 100GB SSD storage, 200Mbit/s network speed limit
It is best to keep in mind that server resources, especially the storage type and network speed limits, have an impact on performance, such as disk and network speed. The results, therefore, are quite different for both providers. As such, we evaluated them while keeping the expected performance for the respective plan limits in mind.
Uptime and server response time
Both Hostinger and Contabo servers were in the US, and the server response time was also tested from a US location, Virginia and Texas, respectively. Uptime was monitored over a 50-day period.

Contabo had better uptime and average server response time than Hostinger. On the other hand, both providers show server response time results well within the average acceptable range of 0–600ms. Both providers are reliable in terms of server reachability.
Disk speed
The Cybernews research team ran disk speed tests for both providers. These are the results:

For Contabo, this is a normal result for the cloud VPS tier, considering it’s an entry-level VPS with a slice of shared SSD pool. However, it is worth noting that with bigger blocks, the IOPS drops sharply. The overall result suggests that the disk performance is good enough to handle lighter workloads, such as low-traffic applications or development environments. For heavier workloads, you should consider the high-performance VPS plans or a different provider altogether.
However, compared to Hostinger, Contabo’s disk speed performance is kind of sad. Hostinger shows results that are nearly 30 times better. Genuine dedicated NVMe storage (as opposed to a slice on shared SSD) shows that the disk speed is perfectly good for all kinds of workloads – from light testing environments to high-traffic applications or containers. Truthfully, the 1vCPU core might end up being the bottleneck under heavy workloads rather than the NVMe drive.
Network speed
Both providers show good performance considering their network speed limits. Obviously, since Hostinger has a higher limit, it is capable of much faster data transfer. This is a general advantage over Contabo and doesn’t necessarily have to do with testing results.

Control panel and ease of use
Contabo offers a Customer Control Panel (CCP) for managing tasks related to installing, restarting, and stopping your VPS, billing and account matters, licensing and addons, security and networking. Overall, the panel is meant to provide an overview of the server for monitoring purposes, and if you need to make server-wide changes, restore from backups and snapshots, and similar.
When it comes to installing applications such as Hermes Agent or OpenClaw, Contabo provides 1-click apps at no extra cost. To install such an app, you will need to reinstall the whole server – all done via the CCP.
Contabo 1-click apps take care of the overall installation behind the scenes, but the final setup is in your hands as the user. You connect to your server via an SSH client to finish the setup – the Cybernews research team likes to use Termius for this.
What I find quite nice is that Contabo provides comprehensive tutorials on how to use the 1-click apps, and how to finish the setup for any of them. On the other hand, sometimes they are outdated, like it was for the Minecraft server in our Contabo review.
Hostinger is known for its multi-functional hPanel. It acts as an account dashboard for billing and related matters, but it’s also a server monitoring station. Here, you can set up and manage security, networking, backups, and optimise performance. Hostinger also offers easy 1-click installs for other control panels and content management systems – including but not limited to cPanel, WordPress admin dashboard, Plesk, and even a gaming panel.
What is one of my favorite Hostinger features, though, is the Docker Manager. If you have installed Docker on your Hostinger VPS, countless possibilities open up. With only a few clicks, you can create new instances to host a variety of apps and agents – n8n, Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, and now also Buzz. Like Contabo, Hostinger also offers tutorials on how to install these AI apps and instances – both with the 1-click installs and manually.
Final recommendations
While both providers offer compelling value, Contabo stands out as the winner for users looking for the best resources for the best price. Contabo provides significantly more RAM and vCPU capacity per dollar compared to Hostinger, which is crucial for compute-intensive tasks. In terms of performance and ease of use, both providers are more or less equal, keeping their plan limitations in mind. Some users might find Hostinger easier to use.
