Billie Eilish calls out critics of AI Met Gala image, “I wasn’t even there”

Technology continues to fool the public and social media goers by generating images of celebrities at events they didn’t even attend.

Artist and musician Billie Eilish responded to the backlash she received for her outfit at this year's Met Gala, which happened earlier this month.

Eilish responded to comments made by social media users in a video that was later reposted to X and shared by the account “Pop Base.”

The “Birds of a Feather” singer said that those who said her outfit “looked like trash” were fooled by artificial intelligence (AI).

“I wasn’t there,” the artist exclaimed. The statement was followed by hysterical laughter, and she later said that the image was generated using AI. “That’s AI,” Eilish said.

“I had a show in Europe that night. Let me be. I wasn’t even there,” she continued.

Eilish performed at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on May 5th, 2025, when the Met Gala took place.

One of the AI images shows Eilish at this year’s Met Gala dressed in a black corset, with a fluffy black skirt embellished with a singular white butterfly.

Another AI-generated image shows “Eilish” wearing a suit jacket with three thorny red roses stitched in.

This is not the first time an AI-generated image of a celebrity at the Met Gala has turned heads.

Pop star Katy Perry had this issue two years running when AI images of her at the Met Gala went viral.

The first AI-generated image received so much traction that even her mother was confused.

Perry was shown in a plunging floor-length dress adorned with flowers and butterflies. The compelling image fooled many people online.

This year, Perry got her own back and posted an AI-generated image of herself at the Met to her Instagram.

Perry captioned the post: “Couldn’t make it to the Met, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour. P.S. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of ya’ll.”

The E.T. singer and now astronaut’s post features her walking the blue carpet. The pop star included users' reactions to the look and her “appearance” at the Met Gala.
