How to change region on Steam with a VPN

Steam is a digital game distributor that offers both – free and paid video games. As good as it is, it can’t avoid the responsibility and has to follow copyright and distribution laws. As a result, the game list differs from country to country. However, this article isn’t for bad news as we’re about to tell you that you can bypass Steam geo-restrictions with a VPN.

With it, not only can you access games that are only available in other corners of the world, but you can even unblock Steam itself if you live in a heavily-censored country, such as China. The same rule applies when traveling or to schools and workplaces that are tough with their censorship. Moreover, a VPN is excellent for improving your ping and stopping the ISP from throttling your connection speed.

Yet, changing the Steam region isn’t as simple as it used to be in the olden days. In this article, I will take you through the steps on how to change your region on Steam, discuss the best 5 Steam VPNs, and talk about what to keep in mind when changing your steam country.

Change region on Steam

Things to keep in mind while changing store country on Steam

Changing your store region and currency on Steam may seem simple and straightforward, but there are some things worth taking into consideration. Here’s the most important stuff to remember before, while, and after changing Steam country:

  • Steam allows you to change your store region and currency only once every three months. They do this to prevent people from changing their store region too often to find better game deals.
  • Changing your Steam store region requires a billing address from that region. So before you do that, find some friends that are willing to share their address and zip code with you for this purpose. Otherwise, you won’t be able to buy games from different countries.
  • You’ll need to use a Russian credit card to top up your Steam Wallet while in Russia, virtually or not. Otherwise, it's likely that you will get banned from Steam. This is most likely because games and in-game items are, according to some, 80-90% cheaper than everywhere else in the world.
  • When choosing a VPN to use with Steam, take into account whether the provider has servers in your desired countries, how fast and secure are the encryption protocols, and if there are any bandwidth limitations.
Pro notice

Using a VPN to change countries to get cheaper and/or geo-restricted game deals is against Steam's Terms of Service. The Steam parent company, Valve, reserves the right to suspend or permanently ban your account if you are caught purchasing games and items in Steam with a VPN. Keep in mind, the Cybernews team does not condone illegal activity with or without a VPN.

Why do I need a VPN for Steam?

If you’re not unsure whether you should really use a VPN to change region on Steam, here are some of the benefits that can make you reconsider:

  • Access geo-restricted deals and discounts. Some countries charge different prices for Steam games. If you activate a VPN in that country, you may be able to get the same game at a cheaper price than the one available in your current location.
  • Protect yourself from DDoS attacks. DDoS attacks are particularly prominent in the gaming communities, so hiding your IP address while playing in multiplayer servers would be in your best interest. A VPN changes your IP address, so no one will be able to execute DDoS attacks on you.
  • Maintain online privacy. Browsing with a VPN has advantages over and above access to geo-restricted content. VPNs encrypt your browsing activity, blocking it from prying eyes, so you can stay safe and anonymous online at all times.

How to choose the best VPN for Steam?

Knowing what to pay attention to when choosing a Steam VPN can save you heaps of time and nerves. Below, you will find the main criteria that help to find a suitable VPN:

  • Geographically diverse and extensive server fleet. The more servers and countries you can connect to the better it gets. This way, you can avoid overcrowded servers that cause lagging and access a wider range of restricted games for better prices.
  • Steadfast security. It’s crucial to choose a VPN that offers market-leading encryption, a functional kill switch, and a strict no-logs policy
  • Fast connection speeds. To interfere less with your connection speed, a VPN should use the advanced WireGuard tunneling protocol. With it, the speed remains excellent without compromising security.
  • Extra features. A bigger number of features guarantees splendid browsing and gaming experience.
  • Compatibility. First, it’s important that a VPN has apps for a variety of platforms, furthermore, the more simuoltaneous connections it allows the better.

Can you get banned for using a VPN on Steam?

No, you won’t get banned by Steam for using a VPN to protect your identity, avoid DDoS attacks, or improve your Internet connection while gaming. So, unless using a VPN in your country is illegal, you should be in the clear.

If you’re going to risk it, I recommend you to pick the right VPN provider, such as NordVPN, one that is sophisticated enough to help you avoid getting banned from Steam.

Besides using a VPN, there are some other ways you could change your country on Steam without a VPN, such as:

  • Having a credit card in the region you want to change your country to. You can change your country, buy a game, and pay for it with the payment provider from that country.
  • Having a gift card from the region you want to change your country to. Same as with the credit card provider, it has to be from the country of the chosen region.

In what countries is Steam unavailable?

Steam is a software distribution platform and gaming hardware producer owned by Valve Corporation, and it is available globally, with few exceptions. Valve is a US corporation, and the United States has software export prohibitions due to sanctions applied to some countries. Some countries in which Steam may not be available:

North Korea, Syria, Cuba, Sudan, Iran, China.

However, there are also locations where game publishers and developers can’t receive payments from Steam. These include Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and more.

Can you unblock Steam with a VPN?

Yes, you can unblock Steam with a VPN. If you follow the guide below, you will be able to unblock Steam in such places as schools, workplace, or heavily-censored countries. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Choose, download, and install a reliable VPN. NordVPN worked great for us.

Steam not working with a VPN – what to do?

Sometimes, even the best VPN doesn’t work as it’s supposed to, and you can’t change your Steam country. Here are some things you can do to fix your VPN problems:

  • Connect to a different server
  • Check if the IP leak protection in your VPN client is turned on
  • Temporarily disable your antivirus or firewall software – it could be interfering with your VPN activity
  • Contact your VPN provider’s customer support
  • Change your VPN provider

Can you change your region on Steam with a free VPN?

Yes, changing your store region with a free VPN is possible, but it will come with certain limitations.

Free VPNs usually don’t have that many servers and locations to choose from, so it is not guaranteed that you’ll be able to change your Steam region to the one you need. Besides that, free VPNs usually don’t offer any additional features, such as specialised servers, ad-blocking, or obfuscated servers for maximum privacy. And on top of that, free VPNs are known to sell user data to third parties.

But if you really want to try and change your store country on Steam with a free VPN, I suggest you look into freemium VPNs, such as Atlas VPN. Freemium VPNs have pretty good free versions, and the option to upgrade to even better paid plans for agreeable prices.

Another option is to also look into VPNs that have free trials and/or money back guarantees:

  • NordVPN – considered the best VPN provider on the market with blazing fast speeds and military-grade encryption. It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and a free trial.
  • Surfshark – one of the fastest and the most budget-friendly VPNs with advanced features for your security and privacy online. Surfshark has a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can also try Surfshark for free for 7 days.

Bottom line

The 500-pound gorilla of PC gaming, Steam can be a fantastic and affordable platform for buying and playing games. However, if you’re not in the right region, it can also get pretty expensive or simply unavailable. In some countries, access to games on Steam is restricted or with huge prices.

However, a fast and reliable VPN with a lot of servers worldwide can help you change your virtual location and allow you to buy games for lower prices in a different region. On top of that, a good VPN also comes with additional benefits – you’ll be able to unblock streaming platforms and other content, as well as protect yourself from DDoS attacks while gaming.

The best VPNs for changing Steam country are NordVPN and Surfshark. Try them out, and let us know in the comments your experience of changing your store region on Steam.

Does not work. I think Steam does detect if your Credit Card is from which country. I did all the necessary steps you mentioned, and was given an error code. Upon asking Steam support, they mentioned you are trying to purchase from another region

"Steam allows you to change your store region and currency only once every three months. They do this to prevent people from changing their store region too often to find better game deals."

What if, for example,
My steam store is currently in Thai Bahts, and I wanted to update it to Japanese Yen. But I need to wait 3 months.

If I buy a steam gift card in Japan (Also note that I'm gonna be living here for a while), will that override the 3 months restriction?

Hi Gon,

The gift card will be converted into the current currency of your Steam Wallet, regardless of what currency it was purchased with, so it doesn't matter if you paid in Japanese Yen or Thai Bahts. Also, if you want to purchase a gift card directly from Steam store, the price will be shown in Thai Bahts, and not Japanese Yens. In conclusion, the only way for you to change the currency is wait for three months. I hope this answer helps, but you can also contact Steam's support.

Just fyi, steam's terms do allow using a vpn if both end nodes are in the same country. You're just not allowed to region spoof.
