Musk’s Grokipedia is a ghost town for months now: here’s why it matters

Elon Musk often and frantically shifts quickly between many of his big projects. After all, he owns Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI – there’s a lot to do. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the world’s richest individual simply forgot about Grokipedia, his “anti-woke” answer to Wikipedia. It turns out the AI-assisted online encyclopedia hasn’t been updated in 3 months.
According to a new investigation by Lawfare, Grokipedia, launched just last October by xAI and named after its AI chatbot, Grok, appears to have stopped updating sometime in the spring of 2026.
Edits from human users have also ground to a halt. Grokipedia’s edit logs appear completely broken as well: it’s impossible now to track which user-suggested edits were accepted or refused by the AI.
Yes, that’s not a mistake. It’s mostly Grok that has been making edits to Grokipedia entries: the site even launched with roughly 885,000 machine-generated articles 10 months ago.
Until recently, human users could only suggest edits anyway. Uploading brand new articles on their own hasn’t been possible. But now, even suggesting changes isn’t an option: these submissions seem to wait in a queue forever, Lawfare says.
Musk – who definitely has an erratic streak about him – hasn’t posted about Grokipedia on X since February, even though last year, he promised the new platform would soon overtake “woke” Wikipedia.
“As one of us was observing change requests submitted to the site, we noticed that some edits had been sitting in the ‘in review’ queue for more than 6 weeks. Grokipedia had previously made decisions quite quickly – sometimes in minutes,” adds the report.
Right now, there are more than 13,000 edit suggestions that sit unresolved. Even a factual update about SpaceX having launched its IPO in June hasn’t been included.
“We do not know whether xAI is preparing a major revision or has altogether abandoned active development of the project,” Lawfare says.

Even then, it soon became clear that Grok mostly fed the new encyclopedia with information scraped from Wikipedia, then tweaked it to better reflect Musk’s worldviews.
The fact that Grokipedia is now essentially a ghost town is important – the site still receives millions of visits every month. Besides, Grokipedia content is cited in quite a few citations across AI systems like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, and AI Overviews, an Ahrefs analysis showed in March.
“A reference work whose contents are silently frozen and whose editorial record is inaccurate could propagate incorrect or outdated information into answers that people encounter elsewhere,” Lawfare points out.
“There are also potential reputational consequences for individuals with unreliable Grokipedia biographies who can no longer appeal to the AI for an edit.”
