OpenAI has experienced major worldwide outages across most of its services, including ChatGPT and its recently released text-to-video generation tool, Sora.
“ChatGPT is down during finals week I’m cooked,” writes one concerned student who took to the website Downdetector to figure out what’s going on at OpenAI.
The artificial intelligence services experienced major outages and were down worldwide. According to OpenAI, on December 11th, 2024, OpenAI’s API, ChatGPT, and Sora were down for just over four hours.
Other services, including Playground and Labs, were also experiencing issues and were reportedly down for just under three hours.
Users flocked to Downdetector, a platform where people report outages in real-time, to report the incident. In the United States, roughly 27,000 users reported issues with OpenAI. In the UK, there were also a few thousand reports.
On December 11th, 2024, between 3:16 pm PST and 7:38 pm PST, OpenAI’s services were unavailable. The company said that it “began to see recovery for API traffic starting at approximately 5:40 pm PST, and for ChatGPT and Sora around 6:50 pm PST.”
However, the problems didn't end there. Today (December 12th, 2024), login errors on ChatGPT and the API Playground occurred in the early hours of the morning.
