Trump-bashers hijack “79% of Americans” after trans athletes vote

The phrase “79% of Americans” has been trending on X as some users lambasted Democrats for blocking a Republican bill banning transgender athletes in women’s sports, while others attacked Donald Trump’s policies.

The New York Times/Ipsos poll found that 79% of respondents did not believe transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in women’s sports, while only 18% said they should be allowed to participate.

The White House account on X, a social media platform owned by Trump’s associate, billionaire Elon Musk, shared the survey, posting in all caps: “Men do not belong in women’s sports.”

The post came after Senate Democrats blocked a Republican-backed bill that sought to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports at federally funded schools and educational institutions.

The bill failed to advance in a 51-45 vote. While Republicans hold a narrow 53-seat majority, most legislation requires 60 votes to pass, meaning some measures can only succeed with Democratic support.

Armed with the New York Times/Ipsos poll, Trump supporters went to X to denounce the vote, accusing Democrats of being “completely out of touch” with the majority of the Americans and “just a bunch of radical extremists.”

Another popular post said that “these Dem lawmakers are ignoring the will of the American people,” overlooking the fact public will is determined through elections rather than surveys.

Some noted that the figure was simply too high to ignore, saying that the politicians “just told our daughters they don’t matter” and “women deserve better.”

“Wrong 1%”

Estimates show that transgender and non-binary people make up anywhere from 0.6% to 1.6% of the entire population in the United States but have been the target of disproportionate political scrutiny, including a series of Trump’s anti-trans executive orders.

These included recognizing only two genders, banning transgender troops from openly serving in the military, and ordering the transfer of trans women to male prisons.

Trans actress and rights advocate Laverne Cox responded to these measures in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating that “the Republican Party is worried about the wrong 1%” and that transgender people are being “scapegoated.”

This view was reflected on X, as Trump critics took the trending “79% of Americans” phrase to bash his policies, seen as favoring the oligarchs, while diluting the criticism of Democrats over the trans athletes vote.

One user said, “79% of Americans know that Donald Trump and Elon Musk are more in this presidency for themselves than every US citizen and are out to rob us of all our money.”

An anti-Trump account, Resist Tyrants, posted, “79% of Americans think Trump is an idiot for internationally destroying Americans with Trump temper tariffs” and “79% of Americans believe Trump surrendered to Sugar Vladdy Pootin.”

Trump has been criticized for moving forward with 25% tariffs against Canada and Mexico, which led to a sharp fall in stock markets, and for having a sweet spot for dictators after he apparently sided with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin over Ukraine.
