Investigations into Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old assassin who allegedly attempted to shoot former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, are ongoing as the FBI has seized his phone and other devices.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) released an update on the ongoing investigation into the 20-year-old assassin who shot presidential candidate Donald Trump at the July 13th rally in Pennsylvania.
The shot grazed Trump’s ear, and the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed at the scene.
This act is being investigated as an assassination attempt, and as potential domestic terrorism, the FBI said.
The Bureau has obtained Crooks’ phone and other electronic devices and is in the process of analyzing the electronics to find more information on the shooting.
At present, the investigation seems to indicate that Crooks acted alone. However, the Bureau hasn’t ruled out the idea that there may have been co-conspirators who aided the attack on Trump.
Law enforcement is investigating the sequence of events, and the electronic devices obtained may help explain the Crooks’ motivation and the events that led up to the attack.
The FBI mentioned that suspicious devices were found and have been evaluated by bomb technicians and at the Bureau’s laboratory.
The public has come forward with digital tips, including pictures and videos from the rally on the day that Trump was shot.
Following the shooting, people have taken to social media to spread misinformation and disinformation regarding the shooter and the incident.
Some have created copycat assassin accounts on X and Instagram, claiming to be “real” Thomas Matthew Crooks, while other people claim that the whole event was staged.
Moments after the attempted assassination of Trump, misinformation and speculation surfaced across popular social media platforms, with people claiming that President Joe Biden was behind the attack, along with other wild insinuations
Cybersecurity experts and law enforcement warn of the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation following the event.
