BBC iPlayer and Sky Go don’t technically require a subscription fee because both services are aimed at UK residents that would already have a TV license. For the Australian streaming options, there are free trials available (between 7 and 10 days) but they are all paid subscription services.

But if you’re from another country looking to bypass geo-restrictions with a free VPN, we don’t recommend it. There are plenty of free VPNs that aren’t reliable and can even sell your data.

Freemium VPNs are a more reliable, yet very limited alternative. You can try them out for basic security, but unblocking streaming services usually isn’t one of their strengths. Especially in this case, since most of them don’t have servers in the UK.

Instead, you can take advantage of paid VPN free trials and money-back guarantees.

  • NordVPN — try its excellent streaming capabilities with a 7-day free trial for Android devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee on top of it.
  • Surfshark — enjoy loads of UK servers and great speeds for free with a 7-day trial for Android, iOS, and macOS and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to troubleshoot VPN issues

If you’re having problems with your VPN but can’t figure out why, you can try a couple of these quick fixes to get connected:

  • Turn off location services — if you're using a mobile device, make sure location services are disabled. They could reveal your real location even if your VPN is on.
  • Try a different server — individual VPN servers can get blocker by streaming sites. You can always try another server in a different location for better results.
  • Clear browser cache and cookies — location data can be stored in your browser, so make sure you clear your cache, cookies, and history if you're having trouble.
  • Update your device — make sure you install any new system updates on your device so it's running on the most up-to-date version.
  • Upgrade your VPN — your old VPN can't get around geo-restrictions? Try one of our picks like NordVPN for a better experience.

I got NordVPN for my android device. To login to BBC iPlayer, you need an account. To create an account, you must supply a Postcode. How are you supposed to do that if you are in the US?
Cybernews Team
prefix 1 month ago
Hi Bob, thanks for the question! Yes, you need to provide a real UK postcode when subscribing to BBC iPlayer, but you can choose just any postcode. You can do a quick search online to find a valid postcode in a chosen city, and that will do the trick! Hope this helps.

Hi Kat. NordVPN offers obfuscated servers, which are meant to hide the fact you're using a VPN at all. Obfuscated servers are available for macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and iOS users. Here's how to enable/disable them.
