Apple just put ChatGPT in your car: no one knows if it's safe

Voice-only ChatGPT is coming to CarPlay with iOS 26.4. It promises advice, conversation, and convenience, but could also become a dangerously engaging co-pilot.

As a frequent pedestrian, I have a trigger that enrages me – drivers talking on their phones. I’m at odds whether this is rational or a behavioral quirk, but it makes me want to go into Grand Theft Auto mode.

Now, with the news that Apple has opened CarPlay to voice-activated apps for the first time on their iOS 26.4, a chatbot can become your co-pilot, conversationalist, or even counsellor.

Allowing ChatGPT into your car seems convenient at first – you can ask it where to stop for gas, or if Terry and Tina’s place is on the second or third left off the boulevard.

But I don’t think for one minute that the conversations will be about the love of the road. The bot will double up as your confidant during your commute.

For all the dopamine hits of investment, creative, and relationship advice, a time and a place should be set for these tasks. Not while driving.

In effect, we could be faced with the situation where drivers start working before they get to work, taking their minds completely off the task at hand, namely getting their Subaru into that parking space.

Unlike Siri, ChatGPT encourages back-and-forth discussion, which may increase cognitive load while driving.

Like claiming crime goes up in summer because of the heat, we have a false consensus effect when people claim that hands-free conversation doesn’t impair driving, even though studies have shown otherwise.

Earlier this year, there was a bizarre case in China, whereby an AI GPS gave a detective class 101, revealing to the wife in the passenger seat of her husband's unfaithful whereabouts.

That’s all fair and well, but what if you want some true privacy from datasets to go to the pharmacy, visit a graveyard, book a room at a motel… in other words, live your life.

I’m not sure about you, but my chatbot sure is chatty and likes to pry. If I were behind the wheel, I think I’d stop short of asking where to fill up my car.
