30 years later, we’re closer to the “Clueless” closet, thanks to Google

Google has announced a new feature that makes it easier to catalog your clothes, just like in the 1995 movie Clueless.

A new Google Photos feature will create a digital closet by cataloging the clothes users are wearing in their photos.

The feature uses AI to scan all the clothing that appears in the photo library and create a “wardrobe” collection.

Once the collection is created, users can see an overview of their wardrobe or filter items by category (e.g., tops, bottoms, jewelry).

According to Google, users can use this collection to create new outfit options, save them, create digital mood boards, or share their looks with friends.

Users could also “try” their looks by selecting individual pieces and clicking “Try it on.”

The new feature will come out this summer, first for Android users and later for iOS.

Many might recognize a similar digital wardrobe featured in the 1995 movie Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone as wealthy and fashionable Beverly Hills high school student Cher Horowitz, who loves giving makeovers.

While the digital try-on is no longer a novelty, with many retailers offering users the chance to see how a certain piece would look on them, it is often applied to new clothing.

For example, Google has previously released its Doppl app that lets you see how you would look in outfits from Pinterest, Instagram, or any store.

The company has also updated its AI Try-On feature, which no longer requires uploading a full-body photo. A selfie is enough.

However, not much has been done to curate the pieces already in our wardrobes digitally, with Cher’s closet from Clueless still remaining a dream, even 30 years later.

One of the main obstacles is that we own a lot of different items, so it would take a lot of work to add each item to the database and maintain it throughout time, as revealed in the “The Clueless Closet” episode by the Articles of Interest podcast.

Another issue is that AI isn’t yet capable of understanding nuances related to fit and style.

Perhaps this new Google feature will pave the way for a larger digital wardrobe for the clothes already owned.
