Greenlanders are using social media to mock Donald Trump and reject his plans to annex the autonomous island. And they’re doing it in the most hilarious way.
After weeks of escalating threats to launch a military invasion, Trump announced setting a “framework of a future deal” on Thursday that would solve the issue of Greenland.
European leaders may have sighed in relief, with Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen saying that “the day ended better than it started.”
However, military threats and attempts to bribe Greenlanders have seriously unnerved the island’s 56,000 people, who have repeatedly stated that the autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark is not for sale.
Some Greenlanders expressed their resistance to becoming the 51st US state by creating humorous videos.
Content creator Kiki filmed herself dancing in the snow-covered fields of Greenland, saying it describes the feeling of having something “Trump wants so badly but will never have.”
A 7-year-old Greenlander danced joyfully in front of the camera and gave a cheeky wink because he speaks more languages than Trump, being trilingual as he is.
Perhaps the most viral video was created by the Greenlander who introduces himself as Inunnguaq. It features two people imitating the Fentanyl Fold, a sign of the drug overdose that involves being bent at the waist and slumped forward.
“Bringing American culture to Greenland,” the caption said.
The vast majority (85%) of Greenlanders don’t want to join the US, according to a 2025 survey. The nation has long sought independence and enjoys a strong welfare state, something it would lose in the case of US annexation.
Nor is there an appetite for it among Americans: only 4% say that using military force to take possession of Greenland would be a good idea, an Ipsos survey found.

For some outside Greenland, social media has become the main way to learn about the tiny population living on a remote, but massive, Arctic island. Social networks are also a platform for learning how locals see Americans.
“We don't really value cash, Kardashian lips, and fake boobs very highly,” Greenlandic politician Tillie Martinussen said in an interview, which went viral.
As of now, the military invasion of Greenland seems to be off the table. However, Trump is known for changing his mind faster than anyone can keep up.
Meanwhile, “Make America Go Away” hats, mocking Trump’s “Make America Great Again” style, are selling fast in countries like the US, Denmark, and Germany.
