8 best free AI content detector tools – my detailed list
I reviewed a dozen of free AI content detectors to find the best providers. Below, you can find an overview of 8 AI detection tools that I have carefully selected and who I recommend them to.
1. Humalingo – best free AI detector overall
| Rating: | 4.8 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $9.99/month |
| Best for: | Speedy detection and ease of use |
Humalingo stands out as the best free AI detector due to its speed and simplicity. Its clean interface lets you check content in seconds. Also, it not only flags AI-generated text with precision but also offers paraphrasing and humanizing tools to improve your text.
Accuracy. When tested, Humalingo delivered mixed but usable results. It performed well with fully AI-generated text, identifying ChatGPT and Claude content with 91% and 95% AI scores. However, it struggled with other tools like Perplexity, detecting 79% AI, and rated human-written text at 59% AI. Overall, this resulted in an accuracy score of 75%, meaning it works best for clearly AI-generated content but can misjudge mixed or nuanced writing.
Features. Humalingo keeps things simple while covering the essentials. It offers sentence-level AI highlights, helping you pinpoint exactly where AI may be used. The tool supports 3 scans on its free version and 1 detection mode out of 2 available. Alongside detection, it also features a built-in text humanizer that rewrites content with grammar and style improvements, making it a practical all-in-one solution.
2. Originality.ai – best AI detector for long texts
| Rating: | 4.7 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $12.95/month |
| Best for: | Long-form content |
If you’re looking for a reliable and accurate free AI detector, Orignality.ai is a great choice. It not only comes with a user-friendly interface, but it can handle long-form content even with its free version.
Accuracy. When I tested Originality.ai, it showed good results. Overall, it detected AI-generated content pretty well, as it flagged content generated with ChatGPT and Perplexity with 100% confidence that it was written by AI. It also marked AI text that was manually edited as 100% AI. My original piece received a 98% confidence score that it was written by a human.
Features. As it can be expected, the Originality.ai free version is quite limited compared to paid plans. Yet, with the free version, you get access to its Lite Model, uploads for text up to 12,000 characters, and 3 consecutive uploads before you’re requested to sign up.
3. Surfer AI – AI detector for SEO and marketing
| Rating: | 4.6 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $79.00/month |
| Best for: | SEO and marketing content |
Surfer AI is an AI detection tool aimed at assisting content creators. It can greatly help those who work with SEO and marketing, but need to verify whether the content is original or AI-generated.
Accuracy. To test Surfer, I used the same 4 content pieces as before. It accurately identified AI-generated content as written by AI, flagging ChatGPT-generated text as 100% and Perplexity-generated text as 98% AI-generated. While it also flagged AI-generated content with manual edits as 100% AI, it identified the original piece as 100% human-written. What I liked about Surfer was that it demonstrated consistent results even when I uploaded the same text multiple times.
Features. Compared to Originality.ai, Surfer has an even more limited free version. It only provides a simple scan, which simply indicates the percentage of a chance that the content was AI-generated or human-written.
4. QuillBot – feature-rich free AI detector
| Rating: | 4.6 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $8.33/month |
| Best for: | Detailed text overview |
QuillBot is the most generous free AI detector that allows access to various features, even without a subscription. Also, unlike many competitors, it can analyze text in multiple languages.
Accuracy. During my test, QuillBot was less accurate in identifying AI-generated content compared to Originality.ai and Surfer. When I uploaded AI-generated content pieces, it evaluated them as 75% (ChatGPT) and 33% (Perplexity) likely AI texts. It successfully identified a human-written piece with a 100% score and gave a 63% likelihood of an AI-generated content to a mix of AI-human text.
Features. Where QuillBot truly stands out is its features available with the free version. It gives a rather detailed report, where you can see not only the percentage for AI-generated content, but also which exact sentences are identified as such. You can also see a more detailed breakdown of the first marked sentence, which makes it seem like AI (technical jargon, overly formal tone). Lastly, even the free QuillBot version supports many languages, so you can run AI detection on texts written in French, Spanish, German, and other languages.
5. Undetectable.ai – AI detector with minimalistic interface
| Rating: | 4.5 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |

Undetectable.ai is a solid AI detection tool. Also, it has a minimalistic interface that makes it easy to use, even for complete beginners.
Accuracy. When I tested Undetectable.ai, it did a good job detecting AI-generated content. It marked ChatGPT and Perplexity texts with a 99% probability that they are AI-made. It also did well in identifying edited AI text with a 99% score. Yet, it was less accurate in assessing human-written text, marking it with only 51% likelihood of being human.
Features. Undetectable.ai has a minimalistic free version. It has no extra features besides providing a percentage indicating the confidence score of AI-generated content and highlighting sentences either red or green. However, there’s no clear explanation as to what these highlight colors mean. Additionally, it allows 10 uploads a day without registration.
6. Grammarly – AI detector with additional features
| Rating: | 4.4 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $12.00/month |
| Best for: | Professional and academic content |
Even though Grammarly is best known for its grammar checker, it has an extended suite of tools, including an AI detector. It not only gives you AI scores but also includes useful extras like the mentioned grammar checker, paraphraser, and text humanizer.
Accuracy. Grammarly was moderately accurate when identifying AI-generated content. It scored ChatGPT-generated text with edits as 99% AI. However, it wasn’t as accurate in flagging the text generated with Perplexity, giving it only a 54% AI score. When given an original text, Grammarly did a better job, identifying content as 0% AI.
Features. Grammarly’s free AI Detector works similarly to other such tools. You only need to paste the text you want to check and run a scan. Then it provides a breakdown of the scores, identifying the percentage of how much text resembles AI and the percentage of text in which no AI patterns are found. Grammarly is transparent about how it assesses the content and states that it doesn’t guarantee 100% accuracy.
7. Scribbr – AI detector for academia
| Rating: | 4.3 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | Free |
| Best for: | Research papers, essays, and academic writing |
Scribbr is a good AI detection tool for those who work with academic texts. It can help with avoiding plagiarism and maintaining academic integrity.
Accuracy. Scribbr was accurate in detecting human-written text, as it identified it as 100% human. When I tested it with a mix of human and AI writing, it attributed 63% to AI and 37% to human. However, the scores for fully AI-generated content were not as accurate. While it scored ChatGPT-created text with 75% AI, it gave only a 32% AI score to Perplexity-generated content.
Features. Scribbr is one of a few AI detectors that doesn’t push users to register for an account to use the free version of the tool and doesn’t apply any limits to uploads. Other Scribbr’s unique features are its marker for human-written and AI-refined text, support for multiple languages, and some insight to which sentences are the main AI contributors.
8. GPTZero – AI detector with consistent performance
| Rating: | 4.2 |
| Free version: | ✅ Yes |
| Pricing: | From $8.33/month |
| Best for: | Essays |
GPTZero is another reliable AI detector that has a solid free version. While it comes with a usage cap, it offers rather elaborate text analysis.
Accuracy. In my tests, GPTZero successfully flagged all AI-generated content. It gave a 100% probability score to both texts generated by ChatGPT and Perplexity, and it scored the AI-generated text with manual edits as 68% AI. However, it struggled in evaluating human-written content. My original text, as evaluated by GPTZero, was 68% human and 32% AI-generated.
Features. GPTZero has a feature-filled free version. However, to get access to some of them, like 3 free advanced scans a month for deeper content analysis, you must create an account. If you want to use GPTZero without signing in, you’ll be limited to 4 uploads a day. If you choose to create an account, you will be given 10,000 credits a month for AI detection scans, where 1 credit is equal to 1 word.
What is an AI text detector?
An AI text detector is a tool that identifies content generated by artificial intelligence. By analyzing writing patterns, AI detectors estimate the likelihood that content was AI-generated.
AI detectors are commonly used in academic writing, journalism, SEO, and authenticity verification. For example, educators may use this tool to check if students submit original work. AI detectors can also be used to identify spam or fake news generated by AI.
Depending on the purposes you want to use an AI detector, you can consider various providers. While Humalingo is best for analyzing long-form text, GPTZero is great for an in-depth, sentence-level analysis.
How exactly does an AI detection tool work?
AI detectors analyze content looking for specific patterns and characteristics that indicate whether it was written by an AI or a human. While every tool has its own way of working, there are some common processes used for AI detection.
The two pillars evaluated by AI detectors are perplexity and burstiness. In plain language, perplexity measures the predictability of the text. AI-generated text tends to have lower perplexity, which means that it’s easier to predict the following word. On the other hand, human writing is more perplexing, including a broader variation of word choices. Also, it includes an occasional typo.
Burstiness refers to variation in sentence length and structure. Again, AI-generated text is lower in this measure, with all the sentences being of similar length. In contrast, human writing shows higher burstiness, as some sentences can be really long compared to others or written in the passive voice.
One thing to keep in mind is that an AI detector’s results are probabilistic. Therefore, they provide a likelihood of content being AI-generated and might incorrectly identify machine-written content as human and vice versa.
Tips for finding the best free AI detector
With the variety of AI tools available on the market, it can be difficult to find the best one. When choosing a free AI detector, there are a few factors to note before you make a decision:
- Detection accuracy. When picking a free AI detector, pay attention to independent user feedback or academic validation – it's a great indicator of the quality and accuracy of the tool.
- Transparency. Look for tools that explain why text is flagged and give detailed analytics, as such tools are more trustworthy.
- Privacy terms. While an AI detector might not cost you any money, it may get paid in other ways. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the privacy terms and pick only those providers that don’t store or repurpose uploaded content.
- Usage limits. Check whether the usage limits of a free version are suitable for your needs. Some free AI detectors have heavy daily restrictions or require sign-up for more scans.
- Performance. Think about what kind of content you are going to be working with the most – some detectors are better at handling long-form content, while others struggle with short-form content.
To find the best free AI detector, don’t be afraid to experiment with several tools. This way, you can compare their performance, accuracy, and usage limits, which will help you to find the best fit for you.
Is it possible to bypass AI detectors?
Yes, it’s possible to bypass AI detectors, but it’s not recommended due to the inherent shortcomings of these tools. Most AI detectors assess statistical properties of the text, which can lead to false positives. For example, some human-written text can be flagged as AI-generated and vice versa.
AI detection might also fail due to other reasons, such as rewriting AI-generated content, using paraphrasing tools, or editing AI-made content. However, such methods in certain contexts, where AI-generated texts are adjusted to pass off as original, are unethical. As part of the Cybernews team, I always recommend using AI responsibly and transparently.
Final word on the best free AI detectors
AI detection tools can be good assistants when identifying AI-made content, like fake news, unoriginal essays, or other machine-generated text. As a result, an increasing number of professionals are applying AI detection tools. For example, educators use them to check for cases of cheating and ensure academic integrity.
The answer to what is the best free AI detector is not simple, as it varies based on user needs. Yet, no matter why you have decided to use an AI detector, there are a few key factors to look out for – accuracy, privacy, and transparency. Such tools as Humalingo or Originality.ai can be helpful indicators of AI-generated content, but they are not fool proof. Therefore, no AI detection tool can guarantee 100% accuracy and is best used for guidance.
FAQ
What is the most accurate free AI detector available today?
Based on my tests, Surfer is the most accurate free AI detector. It showed the best results in identifying AI-generated and human-written content out of all 7 free AI detectors I tested.
Can AI detectors identify mixed human and AI text?
Yes, most AI detectors can flag mixed human-AI text, but accuracy drops when content is blended, heavily edited, or paraphrased. They may detect AI patterns, but results can be inconsistent, so findings should be treated as indicators and not proof.
Are AI text detectors reliable for academic writing?
Some AI detectors are more suitable for academic writing than others. They can highlight suspicious patterns, but they’re prone to false positives and negatives in polished academic writing. They work best when used as guidance tools, not evidence.
Do free AI detectors store or share my uploaded content?
No, reputable AI detectors, such as Originality.ai, don’t share your uploaded content with third parties. On the other hand, whether they store your content depends on their terms and conditions. Some providers may keep an anonymized version of your content for training purposes.
How can I improve the accuracy of AI detection results?
You can boost accuracy by using multiple detectors, analyzing longer text samples, and checking for consistency across tools. Also, you can review readability, tone shifts, and repetition patterns. Plus, combine automated results with human judgment instead of relying on a single score.
