Across 65 countries, Trend Micro’s technology helps protect millions of customers, cementing its reputation as a dependable and innovative leader in online safety.
Bitdefender vs Trend Micro: Which offers better protection?
Bitdefender and Trend Micro are ranked among the top antivirus providers based on their performance by independent labs and us at Cybernews. Here’s a table showing their most crucial performance metrics.
| Bitdefender | Trend Micro | |
| Independent tests | Highest marks | High marks |
| Online protection rate | 99.99% | 99.52% |
| Offline detection rate | 98.8% | 85.9% |
| Scanning | 75/100 | 46/100 |
First, let’s look at how AV-TEST ranks the two providers. The latest Bitdefender evaluation was done in August 2025, and the antivirus garnered top points in all three categories (protection, performance, and usability). Moreover, the service received perfect scores in the previous months as well, showcasing its consistency and reliability.
Meanwhile, Trend Micro’s latest evaluation was performed in April 2025, where the provider lost half a point in usability but otherwise got perfect scores. Like Bitdefender, Trend Micro got top scores in previous evaluations, meaning the provider is capable of performing reliably in the long term. In any case, Bitdefender and Trend Micro frequently receive the Top Product certification from AV-TEST.
Another independent lab we frequently reference is AV-Comparatives. The latest evaluation with both Bitdefender and Trend Micro is the Malware Protection Test, September 2025. In this case, Bitdefender performed noticeably better than Trend Micro. Its online protection rate was 99.99%, while Trend Micro's rate was slightly lower at 99.52%. However, Trend Micro significantly fell behind in offline detection. Overall, Bitdefender earned the highest Advanced+ award, while Trend Micro only got the Standard certification.
Real-time malware protection
Now let’s discuss how Bitdefender and Trend Micro fared in our internal antivirus performance tests. We tested the two providers by planting 100 malware samples onto our test device to evaluate each provider’s quick scan, full scan, and real-time protection capabilities. The tests were conducted by the Cybernews research team using malware samples obtained from MalwareBazaar.
Bitdefender’s real-time protection feature blocked 75 out of 100 malware samples, which equates to a 75% success rate. This is an excellent score as far as internal testing is concerned. Meanwhile, Trend Micro detected only 29 out of 100 malware samples with its real-time protection feature, which is a bit disappointing.
Scanning
The scanning evaluation consisted of testing each provider’s ability to perform both quick and complete scans. This allowed us to see whether there’s a noticeable performance difference between the two options. In most cases, there is, but it’s nice to know just how much.
Let’s start with Bitdefender. Sadly, its quick scan didn’t find any of the malware samples we planted on the device. Luckily, the complete scan picked up the slack and found the same 75 out of 100 malware samples.
Similarly, Trend Micro’s quick scan found a small number of malware samples. Unfortunately, the full scan wasn’t much of an improvement, managing to find only 46 out of 100 malware samples.
Phishing protection
The research team also conducted phishing tests with the two providers to see how well they protect their customers from online threats. For this evaluation, we had to use their browser extensions since those come with phishing protection.
Once again, Bitdefender performed much better than Trend Micro. It blocked 18 out of 20 phishing sites we tested. In contrast, Trend Micro blocked only 9 out of 20 phishing sites, which is half as effective as Bitdefender.
Pricing and plans
Bitdefender and Trend Micro are pretty different in the pricing category. Bitdefender starts at a lower price ($12.99/year) and offers an unlimited free tier; however, it has fewer subscription options, and its top plan is more expensive ($64.99/year).
In contrast, Trend Micro has a higher starting price ($29.95/year), and its free tier is only available on mobile devices. However, it offers four subscription tiers in total, providing better flexibility, and the most feature-rich one is more affordable ($109.95/year) than Bitdefender’s offering. Here’s a table comparing the two antivirus providers.
| Plan | Bitdefender | Trend Micro |
| Free plan | Windows, macOS, Android | Android, iOS |
| Antivirus Plus/Antivirus+ Security | $12.99/year, 1 device | $29.95/year, 1 device |
| Total Security/Internet Security | $19.99/year, 3 devices | $59.95/year, 3 devices |
| Maximum Security | N/A | $74.95/year, 5 devices |
| Premium Security/Premium Security Suite | $64.99/year, 10 devices | $109.95/year, 10 devices |
| Money-back guarantee | 30 days | Unclear |
| Check pricing | Check pricing |
I think this table clearly illustrates that Bitdefender is better suited for budget-conscious users. For starters, you can use it entirely for free on almost any device, which is a significant advantage over Trend Micro. Secondly, its Antivirus Plus and Total Security plans are pretty affordable compared to Trend Micro’s alternatives.
However, the situation changes when we look at the higher subscription tiers. Firstly, the Trend Micro Maximum Security tier can protect 5 devices for $74.95/year. Meanwhile, Bitdefender doesn’t have a plan that’s suitable for 5 devices. Moreover, Trend Micro’s most expensive Premium Security Suite costs $109.95/year, which is cheaper than Bitdefender’s Premium Security plan.
Additionally, Bitdefender clearly states that it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee with all of its plans. Meanwhile, it was difficult to find whether Trend Micro provides a similar refund policy.
Trend Micro vs Bitdefender feature comparison
Trend Micro and Bitdefender offer a wide array of features to protect their customers. The details will depend on the subscription plan you choose, but generally, Bitdefender provides a more comprehensive package for top-tier online security. Here’s a table comparing some of the main features both providers offer.
| Feature | Bitdefender | Trend Micro |

As you can see, both providers include typical antivirus essentials, such as ransomware protection, phishing protection, and anti-tracker technology, to keep you safe while browsing the web. Moreover, some plans also include a VPN, password manager, and a secure browser to further protect your online activities. These bonus features enable you to mask your IP address and identity, and create strong passwords for your accounts, thereby minimizing the risk of data breaches.
One significant advantage Bitdefender has over Trend Micro is that it offers a firewall. This feature provides you with greater control over the types of connections that are established on your device, thereby reducing the risk of unauthorized access. The provider also features anti-theft capabilities, enabling you to track your device’s location if it is stolen. Naturally, this isn’t the full extent of Bitdefender’s features, which are fully described in our review.
However, Trend Micro also has a few unique features up its sleeve. For example, the Folder Shield perk provides an additional layer of protection for your files against ransomware. There’s also Pay Guard, if you’d like to have a more secure environment for conducting online transactions when shopping online. Personally, I think Privacy Scanner is one of the best Trend Micro features, allowing you to easily check whether your social media sites are set up correctly to keep your personal information hidden.
Impact on PC performance
It’s crucial to evaluate the overall impact an antivirus has on your device’s performance during a scan. After all, this aspect determines whether you can still use your computer for other tasks or if you have to step away until the scan is completed. For some, this could be the deciding factor when considering an antivirus.
Naturally, the research team and I had to test Bitdefender and Trend Micro in this area to see which one is lighter on device resources. For this test, we used a Windows 11 Oracle VirtualBox with 8GB RAM and 6 CPU cores allocated to it from a Ryzen 5 5600G CPU.
Throughout our tests, Bitdefender used between 33% and 80% of the device’s CPU resources, meaning there were still some resources left for other apps. RAM usage stayed around 5.1GB
On the other hand, Trend Micro utilized between 33% and 100% of the CPU during testing, which is a bigger gap than with Bitdefender. However, RAM usage was lower at 4.6GB.
Apps and interface: which is more user-friendly?
Antivirus services must come with intuitive app interfaces so that customers with varying experience levels can fully understand and utilize them. After all, what’s the point of an antivirus app if you can’t use it to its full potential? That’s why the research team and I analyzed what it’s like to install and use Bitdefender and Trend Micro on desktop and mobile devices.
I’ll describe my experience with each provider below, but overall, Bitdefender wins in the ease-of-use category.
Desktop apps
Installing Bitdefender was a fast and straightforward procedure. However, I was surprised that the installation file was around 500MB in size. This could result in a longer download and installation time if you have a slower internet connection or a weaker device. Besides that, everything was smooth sailing.
I was impressed by Bitdefender’s user-friendly interface that strikes a balance between simplicity and advanced functionality. On desktop, the dashboard features a clean, modern layout with intuitive navigation – essential tasks, such as scanning your device, checking security status, or adjusting settings, are just a click away. Bitdefender utilizes clear icons and straightforward language, making it easy for even beginners to use without feeling overwhelmed. Advanced users can dive deeper into customization options, but these are neatly tucked away so they don’t clutter the main experience.
The installation process with Trend Micro was a bit more cumbersome than expected. For starters, besides downloading the installer, I also had to unpack the files. Then, while installing the software, I had to go through extra steps and choose whether I wanted to enable notifications and install the password manager. Overall, I was somewhat frustrated by the number of extra steps required to install Trend Micro.
Trend Micro also offers an interface designed with ease of use in mind. On desktop, its dashboard is bright, visually appealing, and organized into clear sections for security, privacy, and device health. The software employs friendly, non-technical language to guide users through tasks such as running scans, updating software, or managing protection settings. Navigating through the different features is straightforward, making Trend Micro accessible for users of all experience levels.
Mobile apps
As you can imagine, downloading and installing a leading antivirus provider on mobile devices is pretty straightforward. Both Bitdefender and Trend Micro are readily available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, making it easy to install the software on Android or iOS devices. Naturally, there are some feature differences between the two OSes, but here I’ll focus on app design and ease of use.
Bitdefender’s app continues the tradition of simplicity, delivering core features like malware scanning, web protection, and anti-theft controls in a streamlined format. The main functions are accessible from the home screen, and clear notifications keep you updated about potential threats. Whether you’re on Android or iOS, Bitdefender’s mobile app runs smoothly and won’t slow down your phone, offering strong protection with minimal fuss.
On the other hand, Trend Micro’s app maintains a simple, uncluttered look. Essential features such as virus scanning, web filtering, and identity protection are front and center, so you don’t have to dig through menus to find what you need. The app is responsive and lightweight, providing real-time protection without draining your battery or slowing down your device's performance. On both desktop and mobile, Trend Micro’s design philosophy is about delivering security that feels effortless and approachable, regardless of your level of tech savvy.
