Finding the best VPN for Malaysia in 2026 isnโ€™t as straightforward as it seems. Malaysia sits in a grey zone when it comes to internet censorship. While itโ€™s not as restrictive as countries like China or Iran, its government still has the power to monitor your online activity, and certain websites or services may be blocked.

Thatโ€™s why you need a reliable VPN โ€“ itโ€™ll help protect your privacy by encrypting your traffic and masking your real IP address. Beyond security, it can also help you access geo-restricted streaming platforms, foreign Netflix libraries, gambling sites, and dating apps.

To help you choose the best VPN in Malaysia in 2026, the Cybernews research team and I tested 41 best VPN providers to find the ones that actually work well in Malaysia. We looked at security features, connection speeds, Malaysian and nearby servers, streaming performance, and overall usability. Read on for the full testing results and find the VPN that best fits your case.

My top 3 VPNs for Malaysia โ€“ shortlist

Why do you need a VPN for Malaysia?

A Malaysia VPN is helpful whether youโ€™re a tourist, a local browsing from home, or a Malaysian traveling overseas. It protects your privacy, keeps your connection secure, and gives you more freedom to use websites, apps, and streaming services.

If youโ€™re visiting Malaysia, a VPN is especially useful when you use public Wi-Fi in places like hotels, airports, cafes, malls, or coworking spaces. These networks are convenient but often not very secure, so your data could be at risk. A VPN encrypts your internet traffic to help protect your passwords, banking info, and browsing. It also lets you watch streaming services and content from your home country while youโ€™re in Malaysia.

For people living in Malaysia, a VPN gives you more privacy by hiding your IP address and making it harder for others to track what you do online. This matters even more now that online platforms have stricter rules, like new age checks for TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. A VPN isnโ€™t a substitute for good account security, but it can help limit tracking and keep your daily browsing more private.

If youโ€™re a Malaysian traveling outside the country, a VPN can help you keep access to content and services from home. By connecting via a Malaysian server, you might be able to use local streaming sites, news, banking, and other Malaysia-based services that are blocked abroad. So, a VPN is helpful not just for privacy and security, but also for browsing familiar online content while youโ€™re overseas.

Top 3 best VPNs for Malaysia โ€“ detailed list

The 3 VPNs below are all reliable options for Malaysia. Each one checks the essential boxes for privacy, offers servers in Malaysia, and can reliably bypass censorship and online restrictions. However, they each stand out for different reasons.

NordVPN is the best choice for speeds and streaming, making it ideal for accessing geo-restricted platforms and foreign Netflix libraries. Surfshark is the best option under $3, offering strong security and unlimited connections at a budget-friendly price. Proton VPN is the most privacy-focused pick, with a strong emphasis on transparency, security, and data protection.

Below, we break down how each Malaysia VPN performs in terms of security, speed, streaming, features, and overall value.

1. NordVPN โ€“ fastest streaming VPN for Malaysia in 2026

Among all the providers I tested, NordVPN was the fastest for streaming in Malaysia. Itโ€™s the best choice if you want steady access to global content while maintaining privacy. NordVPN easily unblocked international platforms, Malaysian streaming sites, and different Netflix libraries.

Speed and streaming. NordVPN truly stands out from the rest when it comes to speed and streaming. It has a big global server network, including 10+ servers in Malaysia. This is helpful if you need a Malaysian IP address or want fast connections while traveling nearby.

nordvpn malaysia

In our tests, NordVPN kept the highest speeds among all the Malaysia VPNs we checked. Nearby servers kept about 92% of the original speed, mid-range servers held around 85%, and long-distance ones stayed near 78%. These results make NordVPN the most reliable choice for things like HD and 4K streaming, video calls, gaming, and torrenting. You can see more performance results in our detailed NordVPN review.

NordVPNโ€™s streaming performance was just as impressive. It unblocked all 10 Netflix libraries I tried with no problems, and I could stream in 4K without any buffering. It also worked well with other popular platforms like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, Astro GO, and Tonton. If you want to access geo-blocked streaming services in Malaysia or watch Malaysian content from abroad, NordVPN is the top choice here.

Security and privacy. Since the Malaysian government has the ability to track online activity, NordVPN is a strong choice for avoiding unwanted surveillance and keeping your browsing private. It uses AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption to make your traffic unreadable, follows a strict no-logs policy, and has undergone multiple independent audits, with the latest one completed in 2026.

In our tests, NordVPN had no DNS, WebRTC, or IP leaks. Its kill switch worked well, blocking internet access if the VPN connection dropped. It also offers DNS leak protection, obfuscated servers to hide VPN traffic on strict networks, and a Double VPN feature that sends your traffic through two servers for extra privacy.

Pricing. NordVPN prices start at $3.49/month, which is a great value given NordVPNโ€™s speed, streaming, and security features. Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it in Malaysia without any risk before deciding to subscribe long-term.

2. Surfshark โ€“ best affordable Malaysia VPN with unlimited simultaneous connections

Surfshark is the most affordable VPN for Malaysia I tested, especially if you want to protect many devices without paying extra. It gives strong privacy, reliable unblocking, and good streaming speeds at a much lower price than most premium VPNs. When I was trying it out, Surfshark worked well with international platforms, Malaysian streaming sites, and multiple Netflix libraries.

surfshark malaysia
Surfshark offers over 12 servers in Malaysia

Speed and streaming. Surfshark delivered solid speeds on nearby and mid-range servers in our Malaysia VPN tests. Nearby servers retained around 90% of the original speed, while mid-range servers stayed at about 78%. However, when it came to long-distance servers, Surfshark was slower than NordVPN: the speed retention dropped to roughly 21%. This is a significant slowdown and may affect 4K streaming or other data-heavy activities.

Security and privacy. Just like NordVPN, Surfshark uses AES-256 encryption, sticks to a strict no-logs policy, and has passed multiple independent audits.

My Surfshark tests didnโ€™t show any DNS, WebRTC, or IP leaks. The kill switch worked as it should, blocking internet access if the VPN connection dropped. Surfshark also includes DNS leak protection, Camouflage Mode to hide VPN use on strict networks, and Dynamic MultiHop, which sends your traffic through two VPN servers for extra privacy. These features are particularly useful in surveillance-heavy environments like Malaysia.

Pricing. Surfshark plans start at $2.49/month, making it the best Malaysia VPN under $2.50 on this list. You can connect as many devices as you want, so your phone, laptop, smart TV, and family devices are all covered with one account. Besides, every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

3. Proton VPN โ€“ privacy-focused VPN for Malaysia with a free version

I included Proton VPN in this list for its outstanding privacy and anonymity. It offers excellent security tools, reliable unblocking, and stable speeds. In our in-house tests, Proton VPN worked well in Malaysia, both in terms of simple browsing and streaming.

Speed and streaming. Even though NordVPN outperformed Proton VPN speed-wise, the latter still delivered stable speeds in our Malaysia VPN tests. It retained around 91% on nearby servers, 81% on mid-range servers, and 54% on long-distance servers. It also worked well with the streaming platforms I tested, including multiple Netflix libraries, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, Astro GO, and Tonton, though long-distance servers were slightly slower than NordVPN.

protonvpn malaysia
Proton VPNโ€™s servers in Malaysia

Security and privacy. This is Proton VPNโ€™s biggest strength. Proton VPN uses strong encryption, follows a strict no-logs policy, and is based in Switzerland, which is known for strong privacy laws and is not part of the 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence-sharing groups.

Proton VPNโ€™s apps are open-source, so anyone can check the code for security problems. In our tests, we found no DNS, WebRTC, or IP leaks. The service also offers Secure Core servers, which send your traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it reaches its final destination. This boosts privacy, but it may slow down your connection.

Pricing. Proton VPN offers a limited free version, which is helpful if you just need basic protection. However, the free plan does not have servers in Malaysia, so you will need a paid plan to get a Malaysian IP address. Proton VPN paid plans start at $2.99/month and include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

VPNs that didnโ€™t make our top 3

These 3 VPNs all work well enough in Malaysia. I tested all of them and came away with no serious complaints. But when I stacked them against NordVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN, each one had at least one area where it fell short. Here is why they did not make the cut.

IPVanish

IPVanish is a solid VPN for Malaysia. It has physical servers in the country, delivers reliable speeds for streaming and browsing, and its no-logs policy has been independently verified. The headline feature is unlimited simultaneous connections, which means you can protect every device in your household on one subscription.

The reason it did not make our top 3 comes down to one simple comparison: Surfshark offers the same unlimited connections, and came out faster in my speed tests. There is no meaningful reason to choose IPVanish over Surfshark for Malaysia unless you have a specific preference for its interface, or want to save just a few cents a month. It is a good VPN, but it just does not win in any category that matters here.

ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is one of the more reliable streaming VPNs I tested. It connected to Malaysian servers without issues, unblocked multiple Netflix libraries, and its Smart DNS feature is genuinely useful for streaming on devices that do not support VPN apps natively, like smart TVs and gaming consoles.

The problem is NordVPN does everything ExpressVPN does for streaming, but better. In my tests, NordVPN was way faster and offered more server locations to pull from. NordVPN also offers a bunch of great extras like Threat Protection Pro, Meshnet, and now also the next-gen antivirus. If streaming is your main reason for getting a VPN in Malaysia, NordVPN is a stronger pick at a lower price.

CyberGhost

CyberGhost looks strong on paper. It has a large server network, dedicated streaming servers that are optimised for specific platforms, and it is slightly cheaper than Surfshark at around $1.59/month on its long-term plan.

But in my testing, it was the slowest of the 3 VPNs in this list, and the speed difference was noticeable during streaming and video calls. More importantly, CyberGhost does not offer obfuscation. That means your internet provider can see that you are using a VPN, which matters in Malaysia, where government surveillance is a growing concern, especially following the new age verification rules. The $0.90 monthly savings over Surfshark is not worth that tradeoff in my opinion. If privacy is any part of your reason for getting a VPN in Malaysia, there are better options on this list.

How we selected and tested these Malaysia VPNs

To compile this list of the best VPNs for Malaysia, together with the Cybernews research team, I tested 41 popular VPNs over a week. I evaluated each one across the criteria that matter most for users connecting via Malaysian servers: speed, streaming, privacy, and price-to-value.

We ran all our tests in our lab in Lithuania, but configured them to mimic the real-life experience of someone from Malaysia. Here is what that means in practice. When you use a VPN, the location of your device matters far less than the server youโ€™re connected to. So, to recreate a Malaysian setup, I connected to each VPN's Malaysian servers, which gave me a Malaysian IP address โ€“ the one a user sitting in Kuala Lumpur would get.

I then tested both scenarios: accessing local Malaysian platforms like Astro GO through those servers, and accessing foreign content like US Netflix by connecting to servers abroad. This covers both sides of how people actually use a VPN in Malaysia, whether they are in the country or travelling abroad.

I ran tests across various devices, including a Windows laptop, a MacBook, and an Android phone, to ensure performance delivered across the devices most people actually use. For speed, I used Ookla's Speedtest tool and measured each VPN across nearby, mid-range, and long-distance servers to see how much the connection slowed down over distance. All tests were conducted in June 2026, so the results reflect how these VPNs perform right now.

Once I had the raw results, I scored each VPN across 5 categories based on what matters most for Malaysia:

Streaming (25%). Many people in Malaysia use a VPN to unblock content, so this is a big factor. I looked at how many Netflix libraries each VPN could access, whether it could reach Malaysian platforms from other countries, and how steady the HD streaming was.

Speed (25%). You want your VPN to be fast, so I checked how much of my original speed each VPN retained on servers that were close, mid-range, and far away, since slow speeds can ruin streaming, video calls, and browsing.

Privacy (20%). Privacy is more important now in Malaysia, since the government collects IDs for social media age checks and monitors online activity. I checked things like encryption strength, no-logs policies, independent audits, where the provider is based, and if they allow anonymous payments.

Price-to-value (20%). I compared what each provider charges to what you get, giving more points to VPNs that offer strong features and good performance for a fair price, not just the lowest price.

Server network (10%). A bigger network means more nearby servers for better speeds and more places to unblock content. I checked if each VPN had physical servers in Malaysia and how many countries they covered in total.

How to get a VPN for Malaysia?

Using a VPN in Malaysia or from abroad is very simple, and the setup steps are similar with most providers. For this example, I used our top recommended Malaysia VPN, NordVPN, to show how the process works.

  1. Download and install the NordVPN application on your device. Go to NordVPNโ€™s website or your deviceโ€™s app store and install the app for your operating system. NordVPN works on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and more.
    nordvpn download macos page
  2. Create a Nord Account and choose your subscription plan. Sign up with your email address and pick the plan that suits you best. If youโ€™re only testing it for Malaysia, NordVPN also includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  3. Log in to your account on the app. Open the NordVPN app and enter your account details. Once youโ€™re logged in, youโ€™ll see the server list and the quick-connect option.
    nordaccount login
  4. Choose a server. If youโ€™re in Malaysia and want the best speeds, connect to a nearby or local server โ€“ these usually offer the highest speed retention. If you want to access content from another country, choose a server in that location, but keep in mind that speeds usually decrease the farther the server is from you.
    nordvpn connected malaysia server
  5. Start using the VPN. Congratulations โ€“ you can now use the VPN to stream foreign or Malaysian content libraries, protect your data on public Wi-Fi, and keep your browsing more private while in Malaysia or abroad.

Yes, using a VPN is legal in Malaysia. There are no particular laws stating that using a VPN is illegal or restricted in any way (except criminal activity, of course).

After all, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an online security and privacy measure thatโ€™s used not only by regular internet users but also by governmental institutions. With it, your online activity and information are protected from cybercriminals, for starters. But, indeed, the use of it has evolved over the years, and now people find it as a tool to stay anonymous from the government itself, bypass geo-restrictions around content, and even enjoy prohibited activities.

However, speaking of prohibited activities, keep in mind that VPNโ€™s legality ends when you use it to violate other usersโ€™ safety and privacy or break the countryโ€™s laws.

Malaysian streaming services and platforms availability outside Malaysia

Many Malaysian streaming services, including Astro GO, RTMKlik, and Tonton, are primarily intended for viewers in Malaysia. As a result, they may not work when accessed from another country. Due to licensing agreements, these platforms are commonly geo-restricted abroad and are usually only available within Malaysia.

Likewise, global streaming services available in Malaysia, such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, can show different movies and TV shows depending on the country youโ€™re connecting from.

The table below highlights several popular Malaysian streaming platforms and whether they can be accessed outside Malaysia.

Can I use a free VPN in Malaysia?

Yes, you can use a free VPN in Malaysia, but there are a few aspects to consider before that. While a free VPN does encrypt your traffic, itโ€™s likely that it uses outdated security features, as thereโ€™s no investment in the program.

But outdated apps are not going to work for Malaysia. Free VPNs also have data and speed caps, their server fleets are tiny and crowded, not to mention a lack of additional security features. Finally, there have been cases where a free VPN was caught collecting and selling usersโ€™ data to third parties.

Overall, most free VPNs for Malaysia arenโ€™t safe or effective enough to recommend. Many come with strict data limits, slower speeds, weak security, and poor unblocking results. The only free VPN I would recommend is Proton VPN, since it has no data caps and offers the same core privacy guarantees as its paid version. However, its free plan doesnโ€™t include servers in Malaysia, so it wonโ€™t work if you need a Malaysian IP address.

For the best free VPN experience, itโ€™s better to use premium VPN free trials or 30-day money-back guarantees. Providers like NordVPN and Surfshark let you test their full apps risk-free, including unlimited data, faster speeds, Malaysian servers, stronger security features, and reliable access to geo-restricted content.

Final thoughts

Online privacy is still a valid concern in Malaysia, especially if you want to keep your browsing activity hidden from ISPs, public Wi-Fi snoopers, or unwanted tracking. A reliable VPN can encrypt your traffic, mask your real IP address, and help you browse more privately both in Malaysia and abroad.

A strong Malaysia VPN, such as our top pick NordVPN, can also improve your streaming experience. With servers in Malaysia and other countries, you can access local platforms from abroad, unblock foreign Netflix libraries, and stream geo-restricted content with stable speeds.

All VPNs on our list include a 30-day money-back guarantee or a similar risk-free period, so you can test their privacy tools, Malaysian servers, streaming performance, and speeds before committing.
