What Apple is preparing for its future releases might be a tad different from what users actually want.

One of the often asked questions before Apple’s WWDC25 is whether the company will announce any new hardware.

Speculations on what will be shared during the conference suggest that Apple will focus solely on the latest software.

When it comes to the release of the new hardware, users online discuss the possibility of Apple bringing back an upgraded iPod.
Another Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is set to start on June 9th. As every year, this event is followed by speculation about what the company will present.
While this annual conference is known to focus on the latest software and the features it brings, the question still remains whether the company will announce any new hardware.
According to Bloomberg, this year's conference is expected to be on a “smaller scale” compared with previous events. It will focus on the upcoming software releases of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.
Despite the anticipated focus on software, previous years' practice suggests that the company may still reveal something from the hardware section.
What new hardware could Apple have under its sleeve?
If the company decides to share some news about the future hardware, it most likely will be something smaller.
This sounds possible since the company updated most of its Mac computers last October, as well as iPads, with new models that came out in May of 2025.
The release of Apple’s most popular product, the iPhone, is expected to launch in September, as is the new Apple Watch. September could also be the time when Apple TV and HomePod mini could see the light of day.
Apple could give a glimpse at its smart home hub, which was held off because of delayed Siri features.
The future Apple Vision Pro 2 has been the subject of much speculation, including the idea of Apple creating smart glasses. However, it’s not clear whether the new device will be released this year or next.
The question of what new software or hardware the company will present will be answered during WWDC25, which will take place on June 9th, in Apple Park in Cupertino, California.

Users want to bring back the old
While it becomes harder for tech companies to create new revolutionary devices every year, one discussion online shows that sometimes consumers want something that has already been developed.
A Reddit user started a discussion by asking to create a campaign “for Apple to reproduce the iPod.” They shared that the device could come back with an updated processor, SSD storage, Bluetooth connectivity, and more, and would be used only for music listening.
Some users agreed that it would be nice to have a device dedicated just to this specific feature, saving them from online distractions, such as when streaming via smartphone. However, some netizens also pointed out that we now live in an era of multi-purpose devices.

“Apple first turned ipods into iphones. cameras and touch screens. i wish they would bring back the spirit of the ipod. it's just a music player. i think we need more single-function machines in this era,” said the original poster.
Another user shared their surprise “that Apple, given its focus on the health market, doesn't release a device similar to the 7th-gen Nano focused on health and compatible with Apple Music. Now that Apple Watch sales are declining, it would be the perfect time.”

Some netizens also shared their concern about how, even if produced, such a device wouldn’t be sustainable.
“But thinking about it, they would probably make it absolutely impossible to open and change the battery. Everything would be glued, soldered and squeezed together as tight as possible…,” wrote one user.
“While a new iPod with updated figures would be great, they would probably make it super expensive and not repairable, which to me loses its essence,” shared another netizen.
Among ideas on how an old iPod could be given a second life, one Redditor shared:
“Apple's next best move would be stuffing the guts of an iPod into an AirPods case. The new lineup would be regular AirPods, AirPods Color (iPod Shuffle + AirPods), regular AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Pro+ (iPod Nano 6th gen + AirPods Pro).”
