Surfshark CleanWeb is the best free ad blocker. Even though it doesn’t have a completely free version, it does offer a 7-day free trial and a money-back guarantee, so you can try it without risk. However, one of the best things about it is that you can use it on as many devices as you want with just one account, which makes it a great deal.
Performance testing. Our most recent Surfshark CleanWeb tests yielded interesting results. We tested the service’s Mac app and Chrome extension to see if there was any noticeable difference between them. The two showed a noticeable performance difference. Also, remember that the app version Surfshark CleanWeb only works when the VPN is enabled.
The Surfshark CleanWeb extension got 88/100 points on Chrome and 100/100 points on Firefox on Adblock Tester, while the Mac app got slightly lower scores. Surprisingly, Cover Your Tracks showed better protection while using the Mac app rather than the extension.

If none of that is necessary, you can use it as a browser extension on Firefox and many Chromium-based browsers.
Features. Surfshark CleanWeb’s features vary based on the platform you use. Personally, I prefer the browser extension for ad-blocking because it includes better customization options than the app. Plus, even Surfshark itself recommends using the browser extension for the best experience. With the extension, you can toggle three of CleanWeb’s settings: ad blocking, language-specific ad blocking, and cookie pop-up blocking.
As expected, you can also whitelist sites where you want to permit ads for whatever reason. Besides that, you gain many of Surfshark’s other features, such as VPN connectivity, Alternative ID, Alert, Antivirus, and Search. Naturally, the number of features you get depends on your subscription tier. If you’re on a free trial, you’ll only get the VPN, CleanWeb, and Alternative ID.

Total Adblock is my second choice for the best free ad blockers because it performed strongly in my tests. While the free version has fewer features than the premium one, it still outperforms many other free options.
Performance testing. Our internal Total Adblock tests showed excellent ad-blocking results. The research team and I tested both the Chrome extension and the Android app since this service has no desktop apps. Total Adblock garnered a perfect 100/100 score on Adblock Tester. Additionally, Can You Block It and Cover Your Tracks showed no flaws in Total Adblock’s overall protection and ad blocking.
For the most part, Total Adblock successfully blocked all ads on YouTube and weather.com. The one exception was on Android, where you could watch ad-free YouTube using Total Adblock’s app, but ads on the YouTube app weren’t removed. Overall, I consider these to be genuinely great results.
It’s important to note that Total Adblock’s free version comes with a big limitation – it doesn’t block ads on the top 15,000 websites ranked on Alexa. Although Alexa shut down in 2022, this restriction remains and is confirmed on Total Adblock’s website. This includes many popular websites such as Google, YouTube, and Facebook. So, while Total Adblock performs well in tests, keep in mind that the free version won’t be as effective.
Compatibility. Total Adblock works as an extension on most modern browsers, such as Chrome, Safari, and Edge. It can also be installed as a separate app on Android and iOS smartphones or tablets. Sadly, there are no full-fledged desktop or streaming device apps.
Features. Total Adblock primarily blocks ads and trackers and doesn’t offer many additional features. However, you can extensively customize it to suit your specific needs. For example, Allow List lets you pick sites where ads or notifications should be permitted. Then there’s Customize Blocking, which allows you to select which specific nuisance should be blocked by Total Adblock. The feature includes the base ad-blocking filter, tracker blocking, social widgets, and cookie prompt masking. Interestingly, not all blocks are enabled by default, so I recommend turning everything on to get complete online protection.

NordVPN Threat Protection is similar to Surfshark CleanWeb because it comes as part of a complete security package, with the VPN being the main feature. It’s ranked slightly lower than Surfshark since it has only a 3-day free trial, which is only available on the Google Play Store. However, it’s great if you want an ad blocker with many customization options.
Performance testing. The research team and I tested NordVPN Threat Protection to gauge its effectiveness, and the results were pretty good. The tests focused on the base version of Threat Protection, an ad blocker available with NordVPN's free trial. We didn’t test Threat Protection Pro, the more advanced anti-malware tool available on desktop devices, since it’s not included in the free trial or the cheapest subscription tier. The feature was tested on the Mac app as well as Firefox and Chrome extensions to see if there was any performance difference.
NordVPN Threat Protection garnered only 68/100 points on Chrome and Firefox on Adblock Tester. The results were the same when testing the app version. Cover Your Tracks showed that Threat Protection offers great results regarding ad blocking and protection from trackers.
Sadly, the feature didn’t block any ads on YouTube, which isn’t surprising since Threat Protection’s base tier only provides DNS filtering. Regarding weather.com, we didn’t see any ads, but some of the content was missing, too. So, it’s clear that NordVPN Threat Protection is better suited for essential online privacy and protection but not for ad blocking.
Compatibility. NordVPN’s device compatibility is on par with other premium ad blockers like Surfshark CleanWeb and Proton VPN NetShield. The provider offers full-fledged apps for the most popular desktop and mobile operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS). Besides that, you can install the service on various streaming devices, such as Android TV and Apple TV, to block streaming platform ads. Finally, extensions are available for Chrome-based and Firefox web browsers. However, note that NordVPN allows only 10 simultaneous connections per account – the same as Proton VPN – but fewer than Surfshark.
Features. First, it’s important to note that NordVPN’s Threat Protection has two versions. One is called Threat Protection, while the other is Threat Protection Pro. This initially confused me because I was used to a single version of this feature. The standard version is available on all desktop and mobile devices, as well as browser extensions. It blocks malicious domains, phishing domains, and some intrusive ads using DNS filtering. Meanwhile, Threat Protection Pro is only available on Windows and macOS and offers significantly better protection.
NordVPN Threat Protection Pro has three feature categories: web protection, file protection, and vulnerability detection. Let’s overview web protection first because it’s responsible for blocking ads and other cyber threats. The feature includes an impressive array of toggleable modes, allowing customers to choose what should be blocked. So, NordVPN’s web protection includes scam detection, malware blocking, web tracker blocking, ad blocking, URL trimming, and a search results safety indicator. There’s also a separate feature for DNS filtering, but it only works with the VPN enabled.
As you can imagine, NordVPN’s feature arsenal is extensive and includes more than just web protection. For example, file protection ensures the files you download aren’t laced with malware, while vulnerability detection ensures there aren’t any security flaws on your system. Besides that, NordVPN includes Meshnet, Dark Web Monitor, and Dark Web Monitor Pro, as well as other essential VPN perks. However, the features you gain vary by subscription tier.
Pricing. You can test Threat Protection by claiming NordVPN’s 3-day free trial on the Google Play Store, which can only be claimed with an Android device. uBlock Origin made my list because it’s completely free and works really well. It’s also simple to add to your browser, and it did a great job blocking ads and trackers during my tests. Additionally, since it’s open-source, anyone can use it, and developers worldwide can help improve it.
Performance testing. Our uBlock Origin tests returned excellent but imperfect results. Since there are no apps, we only tested the service on the Google Chrome browser.
uBlock Origin garnered 96/100 points on Chrome and 90/100 on Firefox on Adblock Tester. However, Cover Your Tracks showed that uBlock Origin doesn’t offer protection from trackers and fingerprinting, meaning you’ll have to supplement this part with another extension. Lastly, we had no issues blocking all ads on weather.com and YouTube. So, it’s clear that uBlock Origin is an excellent ad blocker, though it has room for improvement when it comes to blocking trackers and preventing browser fingerprinting.
Compatibility. One of uBlock Origin’s main drawbacks is its inflexible device compatibility. The service is only available as a browser extension. At least it’s compatible with almost all mainstream browsers. To be precise, you can install it on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. Regarding Safari, the extension no longer supports more recent (post-13) versions.
Features. uBlock Origin works great when you install it and blocks all possible ads. While there’s a fair number of customization options available on the standard interface, diving into the extension’s settings menu is a bit overwhelming. At first glance, you see a few options to toggle various elements uBlock Origin should block.
For example, you can choose to block all pop-ups, large media files, turn off cosmetic filtering, block remote fonts, and disable JavaScript. You can also play around with element zapper and picker tools, which allow you to remove specific parts of any web page manually. However, if you click on the settings menu, it opens a separate tab where you get access to extensive customization options. While great for some, I think it’s too much for the average user.
Pricing. uBlock Origin is entirely free and has no paid tier, meaning its free version is the best. Additionally, the app’s creator won’t take any donations and instead recommends that customers support block list maintainers. These aspects clearly indicate that uBlock Origin isn’t driven by profit and is committed to making the internet a better place for everyone.
5. IPVanish Threat Protection – user-friendly ad blocker and a VPN

IPVanish Threat Protection is a user-friendly ad blocker included with the IPVanish VPN app. It does not have a free version, but you can try it for free by signing up for a 7-day trial. Performance testing. Since IPVanish Threat Protection lacks a browser extension, I focused on testing the macOS app. IPVanish also offers a Secure Browser extension, which creates a disposable, cloud-based browser that claims to protect against trackers, though it's not an ad blocker. Out of curiosity, I tested both.
The results from IPVanish Threat Protection were rather underwhelming. In tests using Adblock Tester, it scored 51/100 on Chrome and 46/100 on Firefox. The Cover Your Tracks tool showed some protection against trackers on Firefox but none on Chrome. The IPVanish Secure Browser extension, while not designed for blocking ads, also scored low (34/100 on Adblock Tester) and showed moderate tracker protection according to Cover Your Tracks.
Compatibility. IPVanish Threat Protection comes with the IPVanish app and is compatible with major operating systems like Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, VisionOS, AndroidTV, and Amazon Fire TV. However, it does not support browser extensions, which is a drawback. On the upside, IPVanish allows unlimited simultaneous connections, making it ideal for use across multiple devices.
Features. IPVanish Threat Protection works only when the VPN is connected. The feature itself offers minimal customization – just an on/off switch – and doesn't provide a performance summary like Proton VPN's NetShield. However, IPVanish offers robust VPN features such as split tunneling, a kill switch, DoubleHop, traffic obfuscation, and a SOCKS5 proxy.

Proton VPN NetShield is an ad blocker that comes with Proton VPN, a trusted service known for excellent security and privacy. While Proton VPN is one of the best free VPNs, the NetShield ad blocker isn’t part of it. So, to try NetShield, you’ll need to start a free trial of the paid version.
Performance testing. Our Proton VPN NetShield tests showed that this tool isn’t impressive regarding ad blocking, but it covers everything regarding anonymity. Also, note that we only tested the app since NetShield is unavailable as an extension.
NetShield garnered only 72/100 points on Chrome and 46/100 on Firefox on Adblock Tester, which is relatively low compared to other providers on this list. Conversely, Cover Your Tracks noted that Proton VPN NetShield offers strong protection and a nearly-unique fingerprint. Finally, we saw no ads while browsing YouTube or weather.com with NetShield enabled. So, while the feature didn’t necessarily get excellent scores on ad-blocking testing services, real-life tests showed a different picture. Plus, the feature took care of anonymity and trackers.
Compatibility. Proton VPN’s device compatibility is pretty good. You can enable NetShield on all mainstream desktop and mobile devices (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS). However, while Proton VPN also offers a few browser extensions, they omit NetShield, meaning you’ll have to rely on the dedicated apps for ad blocking. Additionally, one premium Proton VPN account permits 10 simultaneous connections, while the free version supports only 1.
Features. As with NordVPN and Surfshark, Proton VPN NetShield is a single feature of a larger cybersecurity package. And in this case, this feature isn’t particularly customizable. The tool has 3 modes on the app: disabled, block only malware, or block malware, ads, and trackers. It also shows the number of ads and trackers blocked and the estimated amount of data saved from their removal. Besides that, there’s no way to customize NetShield to suit your needs. Instead, you can play around with Proton VPN’s other features, such as Secure Core, split tunneling, port forwarding, and more. Also, note that Proton VPN has multiple subscription tiers with varying feature packages.

How we tested and evaluated free ad blockers
Working with the researchers at Cybernews, I tested the ad blockers using our testing methodology. First, we looked for providers that were either completely free or offered a free trial or money-back guarantee. Then, we tested these ad blockers on a MacBook Air 2022 and a Nokia phone running Android 11 to see how well they performed.
During performance testing, we used ad blocker extensions or apps on Google Chrome and Firefox browsers. To see how well they worked in real life, we turned them on and visited websites full of ads, like YouTube and Weather.com. In addition to this hands-on testing, we compared their performance using independent tools such as Can You Block It, Adblock Tester, and Cover Your Tracks to gather more data.
