Sony axes multi-million-dollar game Concord right after launch

Customers who bought the game will soon start getting refunds.

In a few days, Sony is pulling Concord, its highly anticipated shooter that took eight years to develop, from sales.

“Our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended. Therefore, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6th, 2024,” said Ryan Ellis, game director at Sony-owned Firewalk Studios, in a blog post.

He also added that the company will “explore options, including those that will better reach our players,” suggesting that later the game may be made available for free.

According to Sony, players who bought the $40 game will soon start getting a refund.

Those who purchased Concord for PlayStation 5 or PC will receive a refund via their original payment methods. Those who bought the game via Steam and Epic will receive a confirmation and be refunded in the coming days.

Concord was released on August 23rd, but it struggled to attract players' attention.

According to data from the website Steam Charts, which tracks players on Steam, the highest number of players on the platform was 660.

In comparison, the most popular games, such as Counter-Strike and Dota 2, have hundreds of thousands or even millions of players.

It’s estimated that Concord cost around $100 million to make.
