Tens of thousands of Bank of America patrons witnessed a nationwide outage after customers reported seeing $0 in their accounts.
A Bank of America customer was stuck at a gas station, looking to get some gas to travel home. However, when they opened their account, there was no money in there.
Was this a scam, or were more people experiencing the same issue? Naturally, he jumped on a call with a customer representative who told him straight up that they didn’t know where his funds had gone.
“No credits have been issued, and the issue may not even be fixed tonight. So MY money is gone, and I'm almost outta gas, and the bank just shrugs,” he said.
The man soon realizes that he isn’t alone, as many Bank of America customers reportedly experienced the shock of their lives after logging into their mobile and online banking accounts and seeing a balance of $0.
Over 19,000 people reported the same issue or couldn’t access their accounts altogether.
Customers took to Downdetector, a platform that monitors the status of various services, to report the issue. At the height of the outage, 19,369 people reported experiencing the problem, saying that it affected mainly online banking and mobile services.
Bank of America hasn’t released a public statement about the outage, and they’re yet to post on their social media platforms. Yet, the banking giant told CNN that some of their clients are experiencing issues, but the “issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved.”
Bank of America also told Cointelegraph that the technical issues have been fully resolved.
However, Downdetector’s comment section blew up after people reported varying status updates. Only four hours ago, a user complained that they made two online deposits that never arrived in their account.
Some customers reported that their accounts were back online. One person said, “Everything is accessible for me in Arizona. Check your accounts, people.”
Major outages elsewhere
This is just one of three major outages affecting customers across the country and worldwide this week.
Tens of thousands of Verizon customers across the western half of the United States started their Monday morning without mobile service, with the outage still impacting users into the late afternoon.
After a roughly ten-hour outage affecting multitudes of users, Verizon said it has “fully restored today's network disruption that impacted some customers.”
The PlayStation Network was also down for roughly eight hours after the gaming network reported global outages affecting various services. Users were distraught, but now, the PlayStation is finally back online.
