China bets on quantum cyber weapons to win future wars

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has revealed that it is developing quantum cyber warfare tools in an effort to collect priority military intelligence from the public internet.
Quantum technology is seen as the most advanced way the military can surveil open-source digital infrastructure and process vast amounts of battlefield data within seconds.
According to Science and Technology Daily, the PLA is testing more than 10 quantum cyber warfare tools, prioritizing speed above firepower as a definitive advantage in future wars.
Researchers involved in the project are focusing on combining cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum technology into a single operational framework.
The announcement signals that China is moving beyond theory and actively integrating quantum systems into operational military planning.
These tools are viewed as a series of interconnected systems, rather than as individual weapons. The engineers involved in the project combined cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum tech into a single operational framework.
Location-wise, the testing is done at a supercomputing lab at the National University of Defence Technology in Changsha.
What does this mean in practice?
Liu Wei, a researcher at the PLA’s Information Support Force, told the newspaper that the research team was working on “new models of battlefield awareness powered by cybersecurity.”
Quantum positioning technologies could enable highly accurate navigation systems that are resistant to spoofing and jamming. Data collected over the course of a year has been used to create a unified battlefield situation map.
This approach mirrors civilian cloud-based data aggregation models adapted for military use. The emphasis on cybersecurity suggests the PLA sees information control as just as critical as physical defense.
Science and Technology Daily revealed: “[The team] fully leverages the advantages of the public service platform system’s integration and all-domain support capabilities.”
