Best VPN for Firestick in 2024

The Amazon Firestick is a tiny device that can turn any TV or computer monitor with an HDMI slot into a full-fledged smart TV. Additionally, you can boost its potential even further with the best VPN for Firestick.

Using a VPN, you can easily access movies and TV shows normally inaccessible in your region. The software can redirect your connection through another country and unlock geo-restricted cinema in no time. Plus, your online activities will be completely invisible to your ISP and other unwanted onlookers.

However, not every VPN has what it takes to be considered viable for the Amazon Fire TV Stick. Crucially, the service must offer excellent speeds, thousands of worldwide servers, and a FireOS app. And so, I compiled a list of the 7 best VPNs for Fire Stick that cinema fans should consider.

Best VPN for Amazon Fire TV Stick – shortlist

Why do I need a VPN for Firestick?

You would want to use a VPN for Firestick for several reasons, and it’s not just for streaming. Here are the main reasons I'd recommend adding a VPN to your Fire TV devices:

  • Security. A VPN encrypts your data and protects it from hacks and leaks. In addition, a Firestick VPN will prevent your ISP from tracking your activity online and throttling your speed.
  • Access streaming sites. Not all streaming sites are available globally, so you can change your server location with a VPN and access various streaming platforms on your Firestick device. For example, the best VPN for Firestick UK can unblock BBC iPlayer, which is utterly unreachable in other countries.
  • Unblock different content libraries. Content libraries differentiate based on the licensing agreements between streaming platforms and movie studios. So, with a Fire TV Stick VPN, you can access different content libraries to stream content available in countries other than yours.

NordVPN is the best VPN for Firestick devices. Its dedicated app is directly available on the Amazon App Store, and since it offers some of the industry's best speeds, you can easily stream in HD or 4K. Plus, the VPN is exceptional at bypassing various streaming service geo-restrictions.

Streaming. I tested NordVPN and its streaming capabilities on Firestick, and it works great with Netflix (on 16 libraries, including the US), YouTube, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and Max, among others. The service easily unlocked geo-restricted cinema without us needing to alternate between servers numerous times. Additionally, this VPN offers Smart DNS, letting you unblock content even on devices that don’t support VPNs.

Speed. For a seamless streaming experience, NordVPN uses the proprietary NordLynx tunneling protocol, which is an improved WireGuard version that retains 90% of the original speed. I tested the provider's capabilities with the furthest locations, and even when connected to Japan servers to try the Netflix Japan library, the performance didn’t drop below 70% of the original speed.

Compatibility. There’s a dedicated Fire TV app, and it’s rather easy to set up and manage. This app works with 2nd & 3rd generation, 4K, and 4K Max Fire Stick TV devices.

Installing NordVPN on Firestick is simple and only costs $3.39/month for 10 simultaneous connections. With a single subscription, you can stream movies on Fire Stick with your family and friends. Also, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are unsatisfied with the services.

Servers/countries:3200+ servers in 100 countries
Maximum connections:Unlimited
Current deal:Get 83% OFF Surfshark + 3 months FREE

Surfshark is another worthwhile Firestick VPN that offers next-gen protection for unlimited devices. With excellent performance results, features like Smart DNS to optimize the streaming experience, this is a great streaming VPN for Fire TV devices.

Streaming. I tested Surfshark with Firestick and had no trouble unblocking Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and more. It’s also vital to point out that Surfshark offers impressive country variety (beaten only by ExpressVPN) at an excellent price, making it the most cost-effective option for unblocking foreign content. Moreover, Smart DNS is available for accessing foreign streaming content on devices without VPN software support.

Speed. This VPN offers exceptional speeds with the next-gen WireGuard tunneling protocol. It ensures stable connections and a lag-free streaming experience since, with the VPN enabled, I retained close to 86% of the original speeds.

Compatibility. Surfshark’s Fire TV Stick app is user-friendly, and you can quickly download and install it directly on the streaming device. It is compatible with the 2nd and 3rd generation, as well as 4K Fire TV devices.

Unblocks:Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Disney+, and more

Current deal:Get 83% OFF IPVanish + 3 months FREE!

Another affordable and effective VPN for Firestick is IPVanish. The well-balanced VPN includes a dedicated app for Amazon Fire TV and, just like Surfshark, supports unlimited device connections..

Streaming. During my IPVanish examination, I found the service is capable of unblocking Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube TV, Max, and more. With more than 2400 servers in 55 countries, you’ll find enough entertainment content. However, the service lacks Smart DNS, making it less suitable for streaming on smart TVs, gaming consoles, and other devices lacking VPN app support.

Speed. The WireGuard protocol gives solid speeds – I experienced zero buffering, and the speed retention was around 80%. With this VPN, you can even stream your favorite shows in HD with the Fire TV Stick device.

Compatibility. IPVanish has a great dedicated Fire TV Stick app that works with 2nd and newer-generation devices and even has a kill switch. Also, you can find useful setup guides in the provider’s knowledge center.

Finally, IPVanish has a decent price. You can get a subscription for as low as $2.19/month. You can also try the service out with a 30-day money-back guarantee and claim a full refund if you change your mind.

4. ExpressVPN – reliable VPN for Fire Stick devices to unblock various streaming services

Streaming. I successfully bypassed geo-restrictions on all the popular streaming sites during my ExpressVPN testing, including Netflix, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, and others. Moreover, ExpressVPN has the most significant potential for content variety with its massive server fleet across 105 countries. Plus, the proprietary MediaStreamer tool allows bypassing geo-blocks on almost any device.

Speed. The VPN’s proprietary Lightway tunneling protocol provides stable and reliable speed results. The furthest server I tested from my location only showed a 34% drop in speeds. And it retained 77% of initial connection speeds on average. So you’ll get to enjoy streaming without buffering or lags.

Compatibility. You can set up a dedicated ExpressVPN Fire TV Stick app. In addition, it works with 2nd & 3rd generations, 4K, and 4K Max devices.

ExpressVPN is the most expensive VPN option on this list, so you can look at Surfshark if you’re interested in cheaper prices and more device connections. Meanwhile, ExpressVPN’s lowest subscription price is $6.67/month, covering up to 8 devices.

Streaming. I tested CyberGhost on various streaming platforms using its dedicated Amazon Fire Stick app. It unblocked most without issues, having no struggles with loads of Netflix libraries, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more. Naturally, these remarkable results can be attributed to the included streaming-optimized servers. Moreover, CyberGhost is on par with Surfshark regarding country selection and price.

Speed. This VPN uses the WireGuard protocol. Known as one of the fastest protocols on the market, it helps CyberGhost ensure incredible streaming speeds. During the tests, I experienced no huge buffering issues while watching content and retained close to 86% of the original speed.

CyberGhost is an affordable option. Its prices start from just $2.19/month, and you get to connect 7 devices on one account. If the device count just seems too low, you can take a look at Surfshark and its unlimited connections for only $2.19/month. 6. PureVPN – Firestick VPN with a large server fleet in diverse locations

PureVPN banner
Unblocks:Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube

Streaming. My PureVPN evaluations yielded success with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube. Sadly, content platforms like Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ were a challenge that PureVPN couldn’t overcome. If you’d like to access a broader range of services, then NordVPN would be a more suitable option for you.

Speed. PureVPN can bring you solid speeds with the WireGuard protocol. During my test, it retained 67% of the original connection speed. Thus, you can have endless HD and 4K streaming with your Firestick.

Applications. PureVPN has a dedicated app and supports 2nd and 3rd generation Fire TV Sticks, and of course, 4K Fire TV Stick devices.

The price of PureVPN subscriptions starts from $2.11/month and you can even get a 7-day trial for less than a dollar. Also, there’s an option to try it risk-free with an extended 31-day money-back guarantee.

Other VPNs I tested for Firestick

I tested 42 VPNs and their functionality with Firestick devices, but not all made the list. Some providers were close but didn’t cut it. Here are alternative VPNs for Firestick that you can try:

  • Private VPN is a reliable option that has robust security features and can unblock different streaming sites. However, the speeds are unreliable, so it might not be the best option for a buffer-free streaming experience.
  • Ivacy VPN has a simplistic and intuitive VPN app for Firestick that offers streaming-optimized servers for the best experience. Although the WireGuard protocol is available with this VPN, it's still quite slow. The speeds averaged at 32% during my tests.
  • Proton VPN is a user-friendly VPN capable of unblocking various streaming services, has a dedicated Firestick app, and even offers a limited free version. That being said, it’s pretty expensive, coming at $4.49/month.

How I tested these Firestick VPNs

To test the VPNs on my list, I first checked if they could be added to Fire devices. For that, the tests were performed on a 2nd generation Firestick. Don’t forget that these providers can also work as a 1st generation Firestick VPN if you don’t mind the different installation methods.

Additionally, for speed, bypassing restriction capabilities, security features, and app management were tested on the Virtualbox VM with Windows 11 installed on Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 device.

Here are the criteria I followed while selecting and testing the best Firestick VPNs:

  • Compatibility. To be on this list, a VPN must have an app for Amazon Firestick. While there are plenty of easy manual configuration methods, I believe that not bothering to create an app means that the provider is not taking Amazon devices seriously.
  • Simultaneous connections. Make sure you get a Firestick VPN that allows enough devices per account. While 5 simultaneous connections may seem like overkill at first, VPNs can be useful on almost any of your current (and future) smart devices. The device allowance per account ranges anywhere from 3 to unlimited so consider how many you may need.
  • Speed. Let's face it – most of us don't buy a Firestick to watch in standard definition. Unfortunately, all VPNs have an impact on performance. The level of this impact has a lot to do with your hardware, location, ISP throttling, and other factors, but when you can choose a generally faster service. A faster Internet connection will significantly reduce buffering times. Some services also offer a Smart DNS feature that can unblock content but won't encrypt (or divert) the traffic, making your connection way faster.
  • Unblocking. Testing a VPN’s ability to bypass geo-blocking involves installing the VPN, connecting to a particular server, and then opening the desired streaming app. Then, I checked if content from that regional library becomes available. I do this multiple times with different country and streaming service combos to get a clear picture of overall performance.
  • Ease-of-use. Firestick is a remote-controlled device; therefore, the VPN app must also be remote-friendly. That requires the app to be simplistic, easy to navigate, beginner and experienced user-friendly.
  • User reviews. Independent user reviews can offer many insights from daily VPN use in real life. Therefore, I checked user forums like Reddit and Quora while creating the list of VPNs to check the best VPNs for Firestick based on the user experience.

How to install a VPN on Firestick

Installing a VPN on Firestick devices is a straightforward process. All you must do is follow these steps:

  1. Find your VPN provider using the Amazon Appstore search bar. I recommend NordVPN, now 72% OFF
  2. Select the VPN app from the Apps and Games selection and click Get to download it
  3. Once installed, click Open
  4. Log in to your VPN account
  5. Select a location and a server
  6. Once it’s connected, your Firestick will get a new IP that corresponds to your chosen country

Other methods to install a VPN to use on Firestick

While the majority of premium VPNs have dedicated Firestick apps, there are a few that don’t. Additionally, you’ll need alternative installation methods if you’re using a 1st generation Firestick, which doesn’t support the method outlined above. Luckily, there’s a simple workaround – you can either use the Downloader to get a VPN or install it on your router.

Use Downloader to install a VPN

  1. Type in Downloader in the search bar on the Fire Stick home page
  2. Find the Downloader app, then install and launch it
  3. Type in the URL of your VPN's .apk file. My top choice is NordVPN – now 72% OFF
  4. Once it downloads, install it

Set up a VPN on a router

  1. Find out if your router supports VPN connections
  2. If it does, I recommend using NordVPN
  3. If your router does not support a VPN connection, then you would need to install custom firmware
  4. The full setup depends on the router you have and on the VPN provider you choose

If you’re not sure which product to get, here is a list of best VPNs for routers. And if you're in need of a more detailed setup guide, read our team's article on how to install your VPN on a router.

VPN is not working on Firestick: how to fix it

The best way to fix the issue of your VPN not working on Firestick is first to check if your VPN is compatible with Fire devices and, if it is, then reload the app. Otherwise, if that doesn’t work, check for these possible solutions

  • Check if you’re using a Firestick device that supports VPNs
  • Ensure that you have the latest VPN app version
  • Check your internet connection
  • Restart your Fire TV device
  • Try a different VPN provider, like my top choice NordVPN

Additional solutions might help you fix issues with Firestick VPNs that require a bit more work than those mentioned above.

Fixing a geo-unblocking issue on Firestick

Your VPN might not work on Firestick because some streaming apps require additional work to change your location and unblock the available content.

  • Change your device's DNS settings. If your VPN is set up on your router instead of downloading a native Firestick app, then the issue lies in the Fire device sending a DNS request that's outside of the VPN tunnel you’re connected to.
  • Change your Amazon account location. Ensure your Amazon account settings match your VPN server location. To go even further, you can change your system time zone to match the one of your chosen server locations.

Fixing VPN app issues on Firestick

You can suspect VPN app issues if the previous solutions didn’t help. Consider employing these extra precautions.

  • Switch from a remote to a mouse. Some apps don’t work well with a Fire TV remote and instead require a mouse. This issue can be solved by connecting a Bluetooth mouse to your smart TV and, in turn, making the VPN use much simpler.
  • Download Mouse Toggle on your smartphone. Download an additional app for your iOS or Android devices called Mouse Toggle. This way, you’ll turn your smartphone into a mouse, but for this to work on Fire TV devices, you’ll need to enable ADB Debugging in the settings.

Can you use a free VPN on Firestick?

You can use a free VPN for Amazon Firestick, but I strongly advise against it. There are plenty of unreliable free VPNs that can end up selling your data or infecting your devices with malware.

Alternatively, you can try out freemium VPNs for Firestick. These are free services of premium VPN providers that work as introductory products. So they offer basic security, servers in a limited number of locations, and can only be set up on Firestick via router.

To get the best user experience from Firestick, I suggest selecting a premium VPN with a free trial or money-back guarantee.

  • NordVPN – offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 7-day free trial for mobile users. Has over 6400 servers in 111 countries, blazing-fast speeds, and unblocks all popular streaming services.
  • Surfshark – has a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Offers speedy connections for lag-free streaming, great security, and a vast list of servers.

Adding a reliable VPN to your Firestick is the best way to expand streaming platform availability and protect your traffic from surveillance, throttling, and other threats. You’ll have worldwide cinema at your fingertips and added privacy for peace of mind.

The best Firestick VPN, based on the tests, is NordVPN. This VPN easily unblocks all popular streaming platforms, has blazing-fast speeds for HD and lag-free streaming, and offers robust security.

With NordVPN, you can be certain that your real IP address is hidden, your data is encrypted, and you can pick from over 6400 servers in 111 countries. The subscription prices are budget-friendly, customer support is available 24/7, and it’s compatible with various devices.

I want to set up Vpn for Kodi on Fire Stick but I’m having trouble understanding which of them work with Kodi and how to install it. I’m not a an expert so please forgive me if that sounds like a stupid question. I would appreciate if you could tell me where I could read a bit more about vpn install for amazon device, like a guide for dummies :D. Thanks for your help.

Dear alexandrOS,
Thanks for your comment. Installing a VPN on Fire Stick can indeed require some prior knowledge. All VPNs that you see above work with Kodi and Fire Stick. So first you need to install your chosen VPN on Fire Stick. You can find the instructions on the provider’s website and contact customer support if there are any issues. Now installing Kodi on Fire Stick will include sideloading because the app is unavailable on Amazon App Store. You can easily find tutorials by googling “install kodi on fire stick.” Good luck and let me know if it worked!

Is PIA any good? All my friends recommended to try it but none of them have firestick
Mindaugas Jancis
prefix 3 years ago
Dear makedatcoin,
PIA is one of the most popular VPNs, so it comes with no surprise that your friends recommend it. Unfortunately, contrary to the services reviewed in this article, PIA doesn’t have a dedicated app for Amazon devices. However, you can still install PIA on your Fire Stick by downloading the .apk from the official website.
1. First, you enable Apps from Unknown Devices and then get the Downloader app.
2. Then, you enter the URL of the .apk – privateinternetaccess.com /installer/download_installer_android
3. Enter your PIA account credentials and start using the app.

Nord VPN fire stick app is so convenient! It’s quick, never failed to work for me. My rating: 9/10. The only thing that is bothering me is that I’m in it for 2 years now (much cheaper) but I guess it’s okay as I really like it.

Dear John,
I’m glad that NordVPN is working fine for you. You’re right about the long-term plans – sometimes it’s not easy to commit. However, this VPN has been doing great so far, and I doubt there will be any big issues in the upcoming years that would make you regret your decision.
Good luck!

Could you please give some guidance on installing Nord VPN on fire stick? You guys are the best

Hi, menno. Installing NordVPN on Fire Stick is pretty easy. After you download the app from the Amazon App Store, open it and sign up. If asked, enable CyberSec. That’s it, you can start using NordVPN!

I’ve purchased firestick recently (used), and it seems that it was firstly bought, registered or released in France, as many shows on Netflix differ from US library. When you jailbreak your firestick do you need vpn protection ? I want to try update my firestick and change origin location.
Mindaugas Jancis
prefix 3 years ago
Good day, Timofey! While jailbreaking your Fire Stick is legal, streaming copyrighted material is not. Therefore, I suggest using a reliable VPN to protect your privacy. Additionally, a VPN can help you avoid geo-blocking. This way, you wouldn’t even have to jailbreak the device if your main concern is switching from the US to France.

Good day, Telly. It’s pretty simple. You just have to visit Amazon App Store and select a VPN to download on your Fire Stick or Fire TV device. Just don’t forget that 1st gen is not supported! Good luck.

Is it necessary to use a vpn on firestick with a kill switch feature always on ? My internet connection is not very stable, and each time it drops, I have to turn kill switch off , connected to the server , and turn it back on. Otherwise, there is no internet.
Mindaugas Jancis

Hey Sam, if your Fire Stick VPN is running smoothly and doesn’t crash, I guess you can disable the kill switch. However, I would still look for a solution to avoid this possible leak.

I guess you should add to this article, that popcorn time firestick vpn warning, which pops up really often is basically not a warning but rather like an add of VPN providers. At first, I was angry that I was constantly being detected. I am pretty sure I am not the only one.

I plan to jailbreak parents firestick without their knowledge because would worry about that sort of thing. I’m not the most tech savvy and it seems that I lack info on how to jailbreak a firestick kodi with vpn. If run real-debrid with Cinema HD will be enough?
Mindaugas Jancis
prefix 3 years ago
Hey, Mr. Coltrane. I’m afraid I won’t help you with this one as I’ve never jailbreak any Amazon device. I can only emphasize the importance of using a reliable VPN to avoid issues with copyrighted content.
prefix 3 years ago
After a long fight with VPN installing on Firestick I’ve finally won. However, nothing changed. The VPN is on , showing US IP, but the content in apps like kodi doesn’t seem to change. How do i know my VPN is working on Firestick? I have Fire TV Stick 2nd generation.
Mindaugas Jancis
prefix 3 years ago
Good day, silv. Which VPN are you using? And are you from the US? If it shows an IP that doesn’t belong to you, that means you are connected to a VPN. As for the content, everything depends on which Kodi apps you use. But if you can watch the content which was unavailable without the VPN, it means everything’s fine.

Hello! Please, please tell me that I understood everything wrong. I have a very, very old firestick, it still works, but I’ve wanted to try unlocking new content, but came across an article that it won’t simply work. VPN and first generation fire stick are not compitable, and there are no VPNs that would work. Tell me it’s not true.
Mindaugas Jancis
prefix 3 years ago
Hi, Sven. It’s true that the 1st gen Fire Sticks do not support VPNs. However, the 2nd generation appeared one year after the 1st one, so chances are you have a really old 2nd gen Fire Stick 🙂
