How we tested these Fire Stick VPNs

Even though VPNs were created for security and privacy first and foremost, virtually every one of them, including our top 5, has market-leading encryption, a kill switch, and modern tunneling protocols. However, if your shortlist goes beyond our best VPNs for Amazon Fire TV Stick, make sure there are no DNS or IP leaks.

Here's how we tested and ranked there Fire Stick VPNs:

  • Compatibility. To be on this list, a VPN must have an app for Amazon Fire Stick. While there are plenty of easy manual configuration methods, we believe that not bothering to create an app means that the provider is not taking Amazon devices seriously.
  • Simultaneous connections. Continuing from the last paragraph, make sure you get a Fire Stick VPN that allows enough devices per account. While 5 simultaneous connections may seem like overkill at first, VPNs can be useful on almost any of your current (and future) smart devices. The device allowance per account ranges anywhere from 3 to unlimited so consider how many you may need.
  • Speed. Let's face it – most of us don't buy a Fire Stick to watch in standard definition. Unfortunately, all VPNs have an impact on performance. The level of this impact has a lot to do with your hardware, location, ISP throttling, and other factors, but when you can choose a generally faster service, why not go for it? Faster Internet connection will significantly reduce buffering times. Some services also offer a Smart DNS feature that can unblock content but won't encrypt (or divert) the traffic, making your connection way faster.
  • Unblocking. Having great speeds but being restricted from global streaming libraries is a bad combo. Most good Amazon Fire Stick VPNs can unblock at least Netflix US and YouTube. However, the best ones add multiple Netflix libraries, BBC iPlayer, and other streaming platforms. This is often the key factor when deciding between multiple providers.
  • Customer support. Nobody needs them until they do. There's a higher chance that you'll experience issues on Amazon Fire devices than with the well-tested Windows app. Therefore, pick a VPN with 24/7 live chat support. Or at least make sure they reply to emails every day, not every week.

Which Fire Stick VPN is the cheapest one?

Even though we’re always suggesting only those VPNs that offer excellent price and quality ratio, Surfshark VPN manages to be the cheapest VPN for Fire Stick. While its starting price is 2.30/month, you can have unlimited simultaneous connections per account. Yet, protection for a wide range of devices isn’t the only thing that makes this VPN the cheapest option.

Surfshark is simply an all-in-one solution. It has one of the most advanced suites of features, which includes all the essential VPN features, such as kill switch or split tunneling, and rarely seen ones like the IP rotator that changes your IP address every other minute. You can also use its antivirus protection called Surfshark One, which has real-time protection, device scanning, and more.

After all, not only the numbers we see in pricing determine whether a VPN is cheap or not. It’s always important to check the number of features a VPN has and how advanced they are compared to the market. That being said, the most comprehensive VPNs are the ones that cost you the least in the long run.

How to install a VPN app on Fire TV Stick

  1. Once it’s connected, your Fire Stick will get a new IP that corresponds to your chosen country

If your VPN doesn’t have a Fire Stick app, use this workaround

While the majority of premium VPNs have dedicated Fire Stick apps, there are still a few that don’t. Luckily, there’s a simple workaround – you can either use the Downloader to get a VPN or install it on your router.

Use Downloader to install a VPN:

  1. In the Search bar, type in "Downloader."
  2. Find the Downloader app, then install and launch it.
  3. Type in the URL of your VPN's .apk file. Our top choice is NordVPN – now 63% OFF
  4. Once it downloads, install it.

Install a VPN on a router:

  1. Find out if your router supports VPN connections.
  2. If it does, we recommend using NordVPN.
  3. If your router does not support a VPN connection, then you would need to install custom firmware.
  4. The full setup depends on a router you have and on a VPN provider you choose.

If you’re not sure which product to get, here is a list of best VPNs for routers. And if you're in need of a more detailed guide, read our article on how to install your VPN on a router.

What to do if VPN is not working on Fire Stick

  • Check if you’re using a Fire device that supports VPNs.
  • Ensure that you have the latest VPN app version.
  • Check your internet connection.
  • Restart your Fire TV device.

Can you use free VPN on Fire Stick?

Yes, you can use free Firestick VPNs that come from trustworthy providers. Unreliable products often log way more online activity than any paid service and are often happy to share the collected data with third parties for profit. If that wasn't enough, they can install trackers and leak your IP or DNS requests. So if you're looking for a free VPN, only look at freemium options.

Here’s a list of the best free VPNs for Fire Stick:

  • Atlas VPN. With this VPN you’ll get a dedicated app with steps on how to install it. Also, you’ll get great connection speeds for lag-free streaming.
  • ProtonVPN. This VPN has a dedicated app that supports Fire OS 6+ and even provides useful setup guides on its official website.
  • Windscribe. It is another reliable VPN offering services free of charge. You can download a free FireTV app and choose from 10 different locations.

However, you should be aware that free Fire Stick VPNs come with certain limitations. For one, they will be slower. Keep in mind that streaming in 4K requires a download speed of approximately 25 Mbps. If your connection is not that fast, you might fail to get 10 Mbps for HD video quality.

Furthermore, free VPNs have monthly bandwidth limits. For example, Windscribe gives you 10 GB/month, which is exactly one 4K movie. Switching to HD quality will give you no more than two feature movies.

Conclusion

Getting a Fire Stick VPN is a good idea for increasing the number of available platforms and protecting your traffic. Of course, you should always test it thoroughly to see if the performance is good enough for 4K or HD. If you don't care too much about encryption, see that it has a Smart DNS feature that hides your IP address only.

Before committing, check the possibilities that the provider offers: what streaming options are available, prices, supported devices number, and customer support quality. To sum up, our best VPN for Fire TV Stick is NordVPN. It ticks all the boxes and offers the best speeds.

I want to set up Vpn for Kodi on Fire Stick but I’m having trouble understanding which of them work with Kodi and how to install it. I’m not a an expert so please forgive me if that sounds like a stupid question. I would appreciate if you could tell me where I could read a bit more about vpn install for amazon device, like a guide for dummies :D. Thanks for your help.

Dear alexandrOS,
Thanks for your comment. Installing a VPN on Fire Stick can indeed require some prior knowledge. All VPNs that you see above work with Kodi and Fire Stick. So first you need to install your chosen VPN on Fire Stick. You can find the instructions on the provider’s website and contact customer support if there are any issues. Now installing Kodi on Fire Stick will include sideloading because the app is unavailable on Amazon App Store. You can easily find tutorials by googling “install kodi on fire stick.” Good luck and let me know if it worked!

Dear makedatcoin,
PIA is one of the most popular VPNs, so it comes with no surprise that your friends recommend it. Unfortunately, contrary to the services reviewed in this article, PIA doesn’t have a dedicated app for Amazon devices. However, you can still install PIA on your Fire Stick by downloading the .apk from the official website.
1. First, you enable Apps from Unknown Devices and then get the Downloader app.
2. Then, you enter the URL of the .apk – privateinternetaccess.com /installer/download_installer_android
3. Enter your PIA account credentials and start using the app.

I’ve purchased firestick recently (used), and it seems that it was firstly bought, registered or released in France, as many shows on Netflix differ from US library. When you jailbreak your firestick do you need vpn protection ? I want to try update my firestick and change origin location.

Good day, Timofey! While jailbreaking your Fire Stick is legal, streaming copyrighted material is not. Therefore, I suggest using a reliable VPN to protect your privacy. Additionally, a VPN can help you avoid geo-blocking. This way, you wouldn’t even have to jailbreak the device if your main concern is switching from the US to France.

Is it necessary to use a vpn on firestick with a kill switch feature always on ? My internet connection is not very stable, and each time it drops, I have to turn kill switch off , connected to the server , and turn it back on. Otherwise, there is no internet.

Hey Sam, if your Fire Stick VPN is running smoothly and doesn’t crash, I guess you can disable the kill switch. However, I would still look for a solution to avoid this possible leak.

After a long fight with VPN installing on Firestick I’ve finally won. However, nothing changed. The VPN is on , showing US IP, but the content in apps like kodi doesn’t seem to change. How do i know my VPN is working on Firestick? I have Fire TV Stick 2nd generation.

Good day, silv. Which VPN are you using? And are you from the US? If it shows an IP that doesn’t belong to you, that means you are connected to a VPN. As for the content, everything depends on which Kodi apps you use. But if you can watch the content which was unavailable without the VPN, it means everything’s fine.

Hello! Please, please tell me that I understood everything wrong. I have a very, very old firestick, it still works, but I’ve wanted to try unlocking new content, but came across an article that it won’t simply work. Hi, Sven. It’s true that the 1st gen Fire Sticks do not support VPNs. However, the 2nd generation appeared one year after the 1st one, so chances are you have a really old 2nd gen Fire Stick 🙂
