All in all, each hosting type is good for what it’s meant. To decide which hosting type works best for you, you have to pre-estimate your website's size and how much control you’d like to have over your hosting.

Resources

Next, evaluate the resources your website will need. Consider storage, bandwidth, number of websites, and domains, amongst other things. The general rule is more is better due to the freedom it gives you. But, naturally, more resources also equals more expensive.

Unfortunately, pricing tricks are a very common problem in the hosting industry, and there are many variations to them.

As a benchmark, an average response time below 200ms is wonderful. Even if it’s somewhere between 200ms - 600ms, that’s still excellent. But, anything above that is not ideal. Acceptable but definitely not ideal. And, if a provider has a response time near 1s, that’s no good.

In sum, you should know what you can expect from the provider, performance-vise before you decide that it’s the right one. While many optimizations can make any provider that much faster, it would be ideal to find a host that initially has great uptime and speedy response time.

Good support can make or break your hosting experience. The ideal provider should have multiple support options – including live chat, email, ticket, and phone call. Plus, at least one of them should be available 24/7.
