Best web hosting UK: top-quality website hosting

Best web hosting UK

Today, I’m going to talk about 5 excellent options when it comes to web hosting in the UK. I’ll also throw in a quick guide on how to make a choice among multiple providers. That way, you’ll be able to pick the best web hosting provider for the UK.

Choosing the right web hosting provider for your website is no joke, and you should not treat it lightly. Lots of people complain that their sites don’t run as they should, and in my experience, the problem can often be traced back to the hosting provider. Not always, but still.

Have you ever clicked a website only to take forever to load, for instance? We all have, and I bet you didn’t appreciate it. So why do you think someone else would like it when your website is loading at a snail’s pace?

Over the years, I tested more web hosting providers than I can remember. It’s a part of my job, after all. While some of them left me gobsmacked, others made me pull my hair out.

So to avoid the latter category, check out these 5 providers I picked for web hosting UK.

Best web hosting UK: ranked

  1. Hostinger – cheap web hosting for the UK
  2. GoDaddy – best business-oriented provider
  3. Bluehost – WordPress hosting option for the UK
  4. A2 Hosting – all-rounder with fast servers
  5. SiteGround – best WordPress-oriented provider for the UK

Not sure what you need? I included a quick guide at the end of this post to help you out.

1. Hostinger

Hostinger
FeaturesFree SSL, weekly backups, SSD storage, LiteSpeed web server
Uptime100%
Speed511ms response time
Best forSmall business websites

Hostinger is an excellent option if you’re looking for cheap web hosting in the UK. The most basic plan costs under £1. It provides well-rounded services, and it’s easy to use. Plus, it has a performance report that would put a lot of more expensive providers to shame.

So, why Hostinger is the #1 pick?

  • If your target audience is in the UK, you’ll be pleased to know that Hostinger has servers in the UK. Although other server locations in Europe, Asia, and the United States are available too.
  • The automatic setup process makes launching a website a piece of cake. It takes care of WordPress installation, domain registration, and SSL activation,
  • Provider focuses on the performance a lot, constantly upgrading its service: LiteSpeed Web Server, built-in caching, and latest PHP versions are all there.

This is a big list of perks for a price that cheap. Talking of which…

Hostinger has 3 shared hosting plans: Single (£0.99/mo), Premium (£1.99/mo), and Business (£3.99/mo).

Hostinger UK web hosting prices

The plans cover a relatively wide range of needs. All of them come with a free SSL certificate, email accounts, and automatic backups.

  • Single – 1 website, 1 email account, and 30GB of storage. The bandwidth is limited to 100GB. Ideal starter plan for any project that you want to create.
  • Premium – up to 100 websites, 100 email accounts, and 100GB of storage. The bandwidth is unlimited, and you get a free domain. I’d recommend this plan for small business sites and popular blogs.
  • Business – up to 100 websites, 100 email accounts, and 200GB storage. You can accept up to 100 000 monthly visitors. Plus, daily backups and CDN are included. You can run a small to medium online business with this plan.

These are some of the lowest prices in the market for such inclusive plans. At the same time, you’ve got to commit for 48-months to get them.

Best Value

Altogether, Premium seems to offer the best value out of all plans. It’s not that much more expensive than Single, yet the website number limitation is lifted. And it’s just £95.52 for 4 years worth of hosting.

Hostinger performance

When it comes to performance, Hostinger is reliable, fast, and powerful. All thanks to its modern infrastructure.

I decided to build a WordPress website with a demo theme and content on it and test the speed. Hostinger managed to load this website in less than a second.

Hostinger page loading speed

Is this fast?

Sure it is. The maximum recommended is around 3 seconds. So Hostinger’s 936ms page load time has little competition.

But there’s one thing to keep in mind: you have to match the server location with where your main audience is located. Hostinger has servers across Europe, United States, and Asia, so it’s easy to ensure optimal speeds for your visitors by picking the closest location.

Ultimately, the performance is among the biggest perks when talking about Hostinger. It delivers in terms of speed, reliability, and power equally.

To see the full performance testing, check out our Hostinger review.

Altogether, Hostinger is one of the best web hosting providers overall, no matter where you or your audience is located. With affordable prices, easy to use interface – it’s the best cheap UK web hosting service.

2. GoDaddy

GoDaddy
FeaturesFree domain, cPanel, UK servers
Uptime99.98%
Speed341ms response time
Best forBusiness focused hosting

GoDaddy is the biggest domain registrar on the market, but it also offers good hosting services. The provider targets business users, which is why you’ll find business-oriented features (and prices.)

So, what makes GoDaddy worth it?

  • One of the things GoDaddy impressed me with was its ease of use. The user interface is simple and intuitive, so if you’re a beginner, you’ll get the hang of it very quickly. At the same time, GoDaddy provides a complete set of advanced cPanel management tools for those with high mileage on their web development journey.
  • It’s also worth mentioning that GoDaddy doesn’t have a data center in the UK. However, you can opt for the server location in Amsterdam. Anything that’s in Europe for Europe-based audiences is great.

The general thought is that GoDaddy is a business-oriented hosting provider. It’s easy to use but targets users from all experience backgrounds.

At the same time, prices are pretty business-like.

GoDaddy has 3 shared hosting plans: Economy (£2.99/mo), Deluxe (£6.99/mo), and Ultimate (£9.99/mo).

GoDaddy UK web hosting prices

The resources included are generous. No matter which of the plans you go for, GoDaddy throws in a free domain for a year. Storage starts at 100GB. Plus, there are free email accounts and a free domain.

What’s weird is that you get a free SSL certificate only if you purchase Ultimate. And it’s only free for a year. The price after – £69.99/year. So that’s the biggest con.

  • Economy – 1 website, 100GB storage, unmetered bandwidth, and standard processing power (1 CPU, 512MB RAM, 100 entry processes.) You get free Office 365 for a year. For a starter site, this plan is enough.
  • Deluxe – unlimited websites, bandwidth, and storage. Standard processing applies here, too (1 CPU, 512MB RAM, 100 entry processes.) You should consider this plan if you want to create multiple websites.
  • Ultimate – this is Deluxe with double the processing power, meaning 2 CPUs, 1GB RAM, and 125 entry processes. Also, you get a free SSL for the first year. It should match the needs of a high-traffic website.

Keep in mind that different billing terms will have different monthly rates, so see what fits best for you.

Best Value

TIn my opinion, it’s best to pick Economy. It can host 1 big website, which is surprising for an entry plan. By the way, it is possible to get a free SSL via third parties.

GoDaddy performance

GoDaddy is reliable and fast but not as powerful as you would expect. During the full performance testing, it nailed the uptime and speed tests but was lacking in terms of the ability to handle big loads of traffic.

At the same time, page load times were impressive. GoDaddy loaded a fully built WordPress website in 1.5 seconds.

GoDaddy page load speed with Astra WordPress theme

This result is twice faster as the recommended maximum. Plus, other metrics are great:

  • TTFB is 224ms when everything up to 600ms is considered good.
  • LCP is 1.5 seconds. Google considered everything up to 2.5 seconds as fast.

Additionally, you can pick a server location. GoDaddy has Amsterdam in Europe, so if your audience is on the mainland or the UK – it’s the best one. Other locations are in the US and Singapore if you’re targeting the audiences there.

So, when it comes to performance, GoDaddy gets a B+. It’s fast and reliable, yet it could handle more traffic.

Altogether, GoDaddy is a great hosting option for small businesses residing in the UK. cPanel is easy to use, websites are loaded fast, and you get a professional domain from one of the best domain registrars.

3. Bluehost

Bluehost
FeaturesFree SSL, domain, WordPress staging, cPanel
Uptime99.99%
Speed361ms response time
Best forFirst-time users and WordPress sites

Bluehost is a popular web hosting provider that offers inclusive plans at affordable prices. Because it’s easy to use and WordPress-focused, Bluehost has always appealed to beginners. Even so, its purpose is to satisfy the needs of users from all experience backgrounds.

So, what makes Bluehost a good provider?

  • Bluehost made a good impression overall. Starting with an automatic website setup and continuing over to a modern dashboard with a cPanel interface – it’s smooth and easy to use.
  • Tools included make hosting a website easy – you can use a staging tool to test out changes on your website copy. This way, no one can see if you mess up. Once everything’s perfect, you can move those changes to the live version in just a couple of clicks.
  • Customer support is always fast, and you can reach them via live chat, phone, and email 24/7.

In general, Bluehost is a sound option. The user experience is the main priority of the host.

Now, the pricing.

Bluehost has 4 shared hosting plans: Basic (£2.12/mo), Plus and Choice Plus (£3.94/mo), and Pro (£6.88/mo).

Bluehost UK hosting prices

Bluehost’s plans don’t seem to be lacking features. What they all have in common are unlimited bandwidth, a free domain, and an SSL certificate.

  • Basic – 1 website, 50GB storage, 1 included domain, 5 parked domains, and 25 subdomains. Enough for a beginner.
  • Plus – the following are unlimited: websites, storage, domains, parked domains, and subdomains.
  • Choice Plus – similar to the previous plan, except that you get Domain Privacy&Protection and CodeGuard Basic for the first year. If you have a high-traffic blog, for instance, or a small business, this plan should do.
  • Pro – you get everything from Choice Plus, but you also get a dedicated IP, and CodeGuard is not limited to the first year. Suitable for a growing business.

Keep in mind that Plus and Choice Plus prices are the same for the introductory term only. Plus renews at £8.68/mo, while Choice Plus renews at £12.30/mo.

Best Value

I think the best value lays with Plus. It can host multiple websites, and the renewal is not too pricey. Choice Plus would be great, but all the added extras disappear after the first year.

Check Bluehost Pricing Now

Bluehost performance

First of all, Bluehost is not a performance-focused provider. It does deliver steady and reliable results, but speeds are not the fastest.

For example, I tested how fast Bluehost loads a fully built WordPress website, and it came out as 1.8 seconds.

Bluehost page load speed

This is fast, but not on the same level as, let’s say, Hostinger.

That’s because Bluehost uses tried and tested tech and doesn’t jump onto each new performance booster once it appears.

Another thing is server location – you only get the United States. So Bluehost might not be the perfect provider if your audience is in the UK specifically.

At the same time, the content delivery network (CDN) setup takes only 2 steps with Bluehost. So if your audience is scattered across the globe – CDN will work to battle the latency caused by long distances between the server and the visitor.

So performance matters considered, Bluehost is steady and reliable, just not as speedy as the rest of performance-focused competition.

If you’d like to see all the performance tests, you can find them in the full Bluehost review.

Altogether, Bluehost is all about user experience, functionality, and ease of use. It sets the standard as to how a hosting provider should function, ultimately winning the title of one of the best UK web hosting solutions.

4. A2 Hosting

A2 Hosting
FeaturescPanel interface, strong security, fast LiteSpeed web server
Uptime99.99%
Speed597ms response time
Best forClassic performance-focused hosting

A2 Hosting is a provider focusing on speed and security while remaining faithful to the classic cPanel interface. With multiple server locations (Europe included), it’s a great option for cPanel web hosting UK.

So, what makes A2 Hosting special?

  • cPanel interface is just a standard way of managing a website – both experienced and new users won’t have any issues. It just works.
  • A2 Hosting focuses on performance, especially when it comes to its Turbo-brand plans – you get caching, page optimizations, and servers with fewer websites on them.
  • Security is also a strong side of the provider – DDoS protection, patching, updates, and firewalls are with all plans. Automatic backups start with the second one.

Overall, it’s just a very strong and straightforward option if you’re looking for the best web hosting services in the UK.

Now, the pricing part is a bit tricky.

A2 Hosting has 4 plans: Startup (£2.14/mo), Drive (£3.57/mo), Turbo Boost (£7.15/mo), and Turbo Max (£10.73/mo). I personally think that the first 2 plans, even though affordable, are not worth it. All the perks of A2 are with the Turbo plans.

A2 Hosting UK prices

Nonetheless, all plans feature unlimited bandwidth, free SSL, strong security features, email accounts, and an app optimization plugin.

  • Startup – 1 website and 100GB storage. For one website, this is more than enough.
  • Drive – unlimited websites and storage in addition to free automatic backups. Great plan if you need multiple websites.
  • Turbo Boost – this is similar to Drive, except for the unlimited NVMe storage and Turbo features such as 3-level caching and fewer users per server. Hence more resources for you. If you need top performance for starting a business site – this should be your pick.
  • Turbo Max – this is basically Turbo Boost with more available resources. This means even fewer users and websites on the server, helping achieve better performance for larger websites.

Keep in mind that you have to purchase a 36-month subscription to get the best prices. At the same time, A2 Hosting has an any-time money-back guarantee. For 30 days, it’s a full refund, and later – a refund for unused service time.

Best Value

Altogether, Turbo plans are what makes A2 Hosting unique and where the best value is at. Choose Turbo Boost if you have a big and popular website in mind and see if it needs scaling even further.

A2 Hosting performance

A2 Hosting praises itself for the best performance. Yet, when put together with other speed-focused providers, it doesn’t deliver much better results. It is fast and reliable, but just like the rest of the good providers.

For example, A2 Hosting loads a fully built website in 1.4 seconds. That’s slower than Hostinger but faster than GoDaddy and Bluehost.

A2 Hosting speed test

So the results are great.

Additionally, you get to pick the server location. A2 Hosting has Europe, the United States, and Singapore, which covers the majority of the globe. Also, if your audience is not based in just the UK, you can set up a content delivery network (CDN) for free to make pages load fast all across the world.

Altogether, A2 Hosting has a reputable spot among the fast web hosting providers. Additionally, you can expect great reliability and power.

To find out more about A2 Hosting performance, we have the whole testing section in the review.

All in all, if you’re looking for a fast and reliable hosting service that uses a straightforward user interface – A2 Hosting is a prime example of how that looks.

5. SiteGround

SiteGround
FeaturesStaging, caching, daily backups, free SSL
Uptime99.99%
Speed217ms response time
Best forSpeef-focused business web hosting

SiteGround is the best premium United Kingdom hosting option. Focusing on WordPress, the provider has multiple server locations (London included), software optimizations, and powerful tools to make hosting websites easy.

So, what’s there exactly?

  • One of the things I like most about SiteGround is its staging environment. That allows you to play around without modifying the original site. You’re basically allowed to screw it up without any real consequences. You can then push those changes live with just a couple of clicks.
  • Software optimizations to make your WordPress site faster are just the next level. SiteGround develops its own technology – custom Ultrafast PHP setup, caching, and on-page optimizations are included.
  • Security is also strong – from daily backups to DDoS protection and 24/7 monitoring for any vulnerabilities, it has your back covered.

What you should remember is that SiteGround is beginner-friendly, and its intuitive control panel ensures ease of use. The prices are not the lowest, but servers available in the UK are very powerful and secure.

Talking about the prices.

SiteGround has 3 shared hosting plans: StartUp (£2.99/mo), GrowBig (£4.99/mo), GoGeek (£9.99/mo).

SiteGround UK hosting prices

When you purchase a plan, any of them, you’ll get SSL certificates, unlimited bandwidth, daily backups, Cloudflare CDN, and free email.

  • StartUp - 1 website, 10GB storage, and up to 10k visits/month. This is more than enough for a personal blog, for instance. However, it does not have staging nor Ultrafast PHP.
  • GrowBig - unlimited websites, 30GB storage, and up to 25k visits/month. Additional features include daily backups and Ultrafast PHP
  • GoGeek - unlimited websites, 40GB storage, and up to 100k visits/month. You’ll also get everything from GrowBig plus the white-label hosting option and priority support. If you run a small to medium business, this plan will suit you.

These are prices available with a 1-year subscription. The rates for other billing terms are higher.

Best Value

I personally think that GrowBig is the best option to go with. It includes all the essential perks. Meanwhile, GoGeek is great if you’re starting an agency for building/managing sites for clients.

SiteGround performance

All of SiteGround’s efforts to make websites faster pay off. It nails all the tests – speed, reliability, and power included.

Speed is among the most impressive features. SiteGround loads a fully built website in 1.1 seconds. That’s the second-best result on this list.

SiteGround page loading speed

Other metrics are excellent too:

  • TTFB is impressive 90ms – 5 times faster than the recommended maximum.
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is 872ms, when it should not go over 2.5 seconds.

Additionally, server locations cover the whole globe (Antarctica excluded). So you can pick the closest location, whether your audience is in the UK or Singapore.

So performance, just as promised, is the strong side of SiteGround. It’s fast, reliable, and powerful.

You can find the full performance testing in the review that we’ve done.

All in all, pick SiteGround if you’re looking for a powerful business hosting option. With all the tools and power, it will make your job easier.

Best web hosting UK: final recommendations

While there are plenty of web hosting choices, I picked the 5 best web hosting UK options to choose from. These providers all have their strengths, so let's recap when you should choose which.

  • Hostinger delivers impressive performance despite its cheap prices. It's a good all-arounder for small and big websites.
  • GoDaddy makes for an excellent choice for business-oriented websites on an easy-to-use and reliable platform.
  • Bluehost is appealing to beginners due to its ease of use and affordable prices. An excellent option if you're building a WordPress site.
  • A2 Hosting is a good all-rounder that provides speed-focused solutions for businesses with strong security included.
  • SiteGround is the ultimate WordPress hosting option for the UK. A custom platform, ease of use, and strong performance are the top perks.

Factors to consider when picking a web hosting provider

In the process of selecting a web hosting provider, you should consider factors such as costs, performance, and server locations. Since you’re looking for the best web hosting in the UK, that last one is more important than you think.

For a better understanding, I’m going to talk about all those factors individually.

Costs

When looking at web hosting providers, you need to know your needs and establish a budget. You don’t need the most expensive plan just because you can afford it – it’s just not worth it. So you’ll get the best bang for your buck by choosing a plan that matches your website needs.

For example, some providers are available for less than £1 with relatively good server resources. Resources that can host medium-popularity blogs or informational business websites. Hostinger is a prime example of that.

At the same time, you’ll find plans running for more than £10 that feature many advanced features for boosting speed, security, and website management. A2 Hosting and SiteGround are good examples. But will you use all the tools, or are they there just for the show?

That’s how you can actually see the value that a hosting plan brings to you.

However, there are a couple of other aspects when it comes to the costs:

  • When you are comparing prices, make sure to look at different billing periods – while the fees may be low when you access a provider’s website, they are usually calculated for long-term subscriptions. Just to give you an example, a plan that costs around £1/month for a 2-year subscription can get close to £5-7 if you want to pay monthly. So, make sure you consider that when you make a choice.
  • Look at renewal fees – the common practice is that hosting providers increase the cost of your plan when it’s time to renew your subscription. It can be double or even triple. Very few providers lock their prices on renewal.
  • Upselling attempts – you’ll find that when you make a purchase, the provider usually makes a suggestion or two. Some go even further and automatically add products to your cart. The reason why you should pay attention to this is that you may end up with a way higher bill at checkout. Plus, some of the products are way too expensive, and there are free alternatives in the marketplace.

Your best shot is to compare costs on all grounds and then stick to your budget. Chances are you’re going to find what you need.

Performance

Performance is one of those factors that must be looked at every single time you want to pick a hosting provider. It’s a must. Otherwise, you can end up with an inaccessible, slow-loading website. What you should be interested in the most are uptime and response time.

  • Uptime translates into how much your website is accessible to the public in a given period. Ideally, it would be up as close to 100% as possible. However, due to maintenance checks, problems in the data centers, and so on, you will experience some downtime. Just make sure that you go for a provider that can give you at least 99.9%
  • Response time is the amount it takes for your website’s pages to load. The goal here is for your pages to load as fast as possible. In my experience, as long as a provider can give you 600ms at the most, it’s brilliant.
  • Page load time – multiple metrics make up this number, but a fully built WordPress website should take less than 3 seconds to load.

So, before you decide, take a quick peek at the performance results of the provider you want. If you’re satisfied with the uptime and response time they can offer, you can move on.

Server location

Since you are looking for the best web hosting for the UK, you should choose a server location close to your target audience. The closer the server to your target audience, the better your website will perform for them.

All providers on this list have servers either in the UK or Europe, so if your audience is there – you'll have no problems. At the same time, several options on the list can help you get closer to audiences all across the globe.
