Microsoft’s rival list just got a tad longer, with OpenAI now featuring along with Apple, Amazon, and Google.
The decision comes as a slight surprise because for years, Microsoft and OpenAI were considered partners. Microsoft is OpenAI’s cloud provider and uses its AI models for clients and consumers.
It’s also reported that Microsoft invested $13 billion into OpenAI, making it its biggest investor.
In its latest annual report, Microsoft shares that its “AI offerings compete with AI products from hyperscalers such as Amazon and Google, as well as products from other emerging competitors, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and other open source offerings, many of which are also current or potential partners.”
Recently, OpenAI revealed its search engine Search GPT prototype, which will become a rival product of Microsoft.
Nevertheless, an OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC that the situation didn’t change the partnership, as an understanding of their competition was established from the beginning.
Among other Microsoft’s rivals are Apple, Google, software company SAP SE, IBM, Oracle, and more.
