Meta lets users create AI-based characters on Facebook and Instagram

Users of Meta-owned platforms in the US can now create various AI-based personalities, including those of themselves.

On Monday, Meta announced a new AI tool called AI Studio. This tool allows users to create AI characters via prompts for Meta’s owned platforms – Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp – and the web.

AI personalities can be created using prompt templates provided by Meta via ai.meta.com/ai-studio or starting a new message on Instagram and then tapping “Create an AI chat.” Users can customize their AI character’s name, personality, tone, avatar and tagline, Meta said in a blog post.

AI personalities can be made private, shared with friends or followers, or made public to discover and chat.

Meta is positioning AI Studio as a way for creators to interact with their followers. Creators can set up an AI as an extension of themselves that can answer common DM questions and story replies.

According to the company, AI-based characters can be customized on things like Instagram content, topics to avoid, and links that creators do not want to share. Users can also turn auto-replies on and off and decide who their AI replies to, Meta says.

The new tool, powered by Meta’s Llama 3.1 mode, is currently available only to US users.

AI-based characters are becoming increasingly common in the social media world. Google is reportedly planning to create its own chatbots, which would be powered by one of Gemini’s large language models.

The company is in talks with influencers and celebrities about using their images as avatars and is also planning to allow users to create their own chatbots based on prompts.

Platforms like Character.AI and Replica also allow users to create their own AI characters. Meanwhile, social network Butterflies is betting its future on AI-generated personalities.
