Dark web drug marketplace Archetyp Market seized by authorities

The final boss of the underground dark web drug world, Archetyp Market, has been dismantled by European authorities after years of investigation.

Europol has announced that European law enforcement authorities have taken down Archetyp Market, described as “the most enduring dark web marketplace.”

The authorities launched a large-scale operation involving six countries (Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and the United States) supported by Europol and Eurojust.

A coordinated attack took place between June 11th and 13th across Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Sweden.

Europol said these countries specifically targeted Archetyp Market’s administrator, moderators, key vendors, and technical infrastructure. Three hundred officers were deployed to enforce the attack and “secure critical evidence.”

Through this operation, Archetyp Market’s infrastructure, based in the Netherlands, was taken down, and a 30-year-old unnamed German national who is said to be the platform’s admin was arrested in Barcelona, Spain.

Germany and Sweden also took action against one moderator and six vendors, seizing €7.8 million ($9 million) in assets.

“This operation led by the German authorities marks the end of a criminal service that enabled the anonymous trade in high volumes of illicit drugs, including cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines, and synthetic opioids,” Europol notes.

The seizure of Archetyp Market is a signal to other illicit drug marketplaces on the dark web, as authorities were “able to deliver a decisive blow to one of the most prolific drug markets on the dark web,” by tracking financial flows and analyzing digital evidence.

A seizure banner has been placed on the now-defunct marketplace.

This platform was notorious, similar to other defunct drug-dealing platforms on the dark web.

What is Archetyp Market?

If you’re familiar with online illicit drug markets on the dark web, such as Silk Road and Dream Market, you may have also heard of Archetyp Market.

Archtyp Market was in operation as an illegal online drug marketplace for over five years and had a loyal customer base of more than 600,000 worldwide, said Europol in a recent announcement.

The marketplace was so popular that it made at least €250 million ($290 million) during its operation.

What may have made this platform so popular was its unique offerings, as Archtyp Market was one of the only dark web market sites that sold highly potent opioid drugs like fentanyl.
