The chances of getting your lost baggage back quickly just got higher.
Apple has introduced Share Item Location, a feature that allows users to share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessory with third parties.
The new feature should be useful for when users report their luggage missing.
If the missing item has an AirTag attached, the user can share a secure link with the airlines to find the misplaced baggage faster.
Share Item Location is available in the public beta of iOS 18.2 in most regions online, shared the company, with the promise to make the feature available to all users as “a free software update for iPhone Xs and later.”
As soon the user gets their item back, the location sharing will be disabled. The user can also stop the location sharing at any time, or the link will disappear automatically after seven days.
The link for Share Item Location can be generated in the Find My app via iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
The link recipients will be redirected to a website where they can view the location information on an interactive map.
The information on the map is updated automatically, with the new location available and time stamps of the most recent update.
Apple plans to partner with more than 15 airlines to add Find My Item locations to their customer service processes for locating missing items.
“Apple has worked directly with partner airlines to put systems in place to privately and securely accept Share Item Location,” reports the company. Access to the link will be provided to a limited number of people who must go through authentication processes first.
