British retailer Funky Pigeon suspends digital orders following a “cyber incident”

The WH Smith-owned online greetings card and gift company Funky Pigeon suffered from a cyberattack, halting all new orders.

The British retailer announced on Tuesday that it had experienced a “cyber incident.” The cyberattack was discovered last Thursday, prompting a forensic investigation with a team of external experts.

In the meantime, Funky Pigeon has taken their systems offline “as a precaution measure,” suspending all online orders.

“We take the security of customer data extremely seriously and we have temporarily suspended any new orders via the website. We have also informed the relevant regulators and law enforcement authorities, and we will continue to review and update our protocols based on what we learn from this incident,” the company said in a statement.

The retailer informed their customers of the incident, notifying every buyer who has made a purchase with Funky Pigeon over the last year. However, the company commented that it does not believe that any significant security breach, such as a leak of passwords, took place. It added that customer payment information is processed via a third-party system and is encrypted, thus being secure from potential security breaches.

The ongoing investigation will examine whether any other data, such as names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and personalized card and gift designs, has been compromised.

Going forward, Funky Pigeon “will continue to review and update our protocols based on what we learn from this incident.”

“We would like to sincerely apologise to our customers for any concern or disruption this may cause, and reassure them that our teams are working around the clock to investigate and resolve this incident. As our investigation progresses, we will provide further updates to customers and other affected parties as necessary,” the statement concludes.
