New on streaming: America hunts Bin Laden while “Murderbot” searches for meaning of life

It wouldn’t be great to cancel your Netflix subscription and then see that “Love, Death & Robots” is returning with season 4, along with a new batch of stories by Tom Segura premiering.

Love, Death & Robots has gained a cult following over the years – thousands of fans, including us, have patiently waited for the Emmy-winning show’s new season. Finally, the wait is over.

Murderbot is only kicking off on Apple TV+, of course. But it’s got Alexander Skarsgård, the one and only. Add the AI-induced anxieties of today, and the series already looks brilliant. And there’s, of course, more.

Love, Death & Robots Season 4 (Netflix)

Netflix’s official line reads that Volume 4 of the animated anthology delivers a stampede of “dinosaur gladiators, messianic cats, and string-puppet rock stars.” Sounds stimulating, that’s for sure.

The show has proved to be the opposite of boring. No wonder the first three seasons were lavished with critical praise and gleaming Emmy Awards. The teaser of the new one includes colossal robot babies, a talking blue sex toy, and a Lilliputian alien invasion.

It’s been three years. Let’s hope it was worth it – and that all ten episodes will be released simultaneously!

Murderbot (Apple TV+)

Based on the book series “The Murderbot Diaries” by Martha Wells, Murderbot debuts this week on Apple TV+, starring one of the most potent weapons in the TV business – Alexander Skarsgård, the talented Swedish actor.

The premise reads: a partly biological security cyborg that privately calls itself Murderbot must hide its ability for free thought whilst completing dangerous assignments and is simultaneously drawn to humans and appalled at their weakness.

This sounds fun, especially in an era where we are simultaneously excited and fretting about the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the possibility of singularity. Murderbot is at least a comedy, and apparently allows AI to be the good guy for once.

Duster (Max)

JJ Abrams has created an enormous number of TV series, including Lost and Fringe. He’s back with Duster, a gritty crime drama set in 1972 that follows a getaway driver who works for a crime syndicate in the American Southwest.

The show stars Lost’s Josh Holloway and has already been called the most badass TV production of this summer season.

Shoot-outs and car chases are not exactly what we’re used to getting from JJ Abrams – he’s more into mysterious science fiction. But hey, first time for everything.

Bad Thoughts (Netflix)

Comedian Tom Segura has so far released five stand-up specials on Netflix. This time, though, he returns with a twisted comedy series, Bad Thoughts.

The show blends elements of Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone, they say – plus some big laughs and awkward moments that seem genuinely designed to test the viewer’s gag reflex.

Netflix has even used Segura’s mother, Rosario Lazarte to demonstrate how unhinged the series is. “No, Tommy. That’s not funny. This is so disgusting. I am beyond vomit,” she says in one clip.

American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden (Netflix)

This three-part docuseries from directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan gives an in-depth look at how the world mobilized to hunt down Osama Bin Laden after his orchestrations of the September 11th, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington.

The documentary features interviews with key people within the US government who helped in the global chase of the world’s most notorious terrorist.

The two previous American Manhunt documentaries about O.J. Simpson and the Boston marathon bombing were truly solid, so we have high hopes for this one as well.
