Key differences between Mozilla VPN and NordVPN
Mozilla VPN and NordVPN serve different types of users. NordVPN is the stronger all-round option with a richer feature set and broader server coverage, while Mozilla VPN keeps things simple and is a decent choice for basic, everyday browsing.
Choose NordVPN if:
- You want better long-term value. NordVPN's 2-year plans offer significantly lower monthly costs than Mozilla VPN, which doesn't offer any long-term subscription options. Over time, NordVPN works out much cheaper.
- Speed matters to you. NordVPN retains 83% of your base connection speed on average, compared to Mozilla VPN's 42%. That gap is especially noticeable on uploads, where Mozilla VPN falls notably behind.
- You need wide server coverage. With 9,500+ servers across 149 countries versus Mozilla VPN's 500+ servers in 30 countries, NordVPN gives you far more flexibility – whether you're traveling or trying to access geo-restricted content.
- You stream a lot. NordVPN unblocks more streaming platforms across more regions, making it the better pick for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and similar services.
- You care about verified privacy. NordVPN's no-logs policy has been independently audited five times. Mozilla VPN has yet to undergo any such audit.
- You want advanced features. NordVPN includes specialty servers, Smart DNS, and dark web monitoring – tools that Mozilla VPN simply doesn't offer.

Choose Mozilla VPN if:
- You only need a VPN for one month. Mozilla VPN's monthly plan is cheaper than NordVPN's, making it the more budget-friendly option for short-term use.
- You want a straightforward, no-fuss experience. Mozilla VPN is built for simplicity – if you just need a reliable VPN for everyday browsing without diving into settings or extra features, it does the job cleanly.
- You're already in the Mozilla ecosystem. If you're a Firefox user who values Mozilla's privacy-first philosophy, Mozilla VPN is a natural fit that aligns with those values.

Speed, performance, and streaming
NordVPN is significantly faster than Mozilla VPN, delivering much higher speeds, especially for uploads. One of NordVPN’s biggest strengths is its variety of connection protocols, including NordLynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPSec. In my testing, the best speeds came from NordLynx, NordVPN’s custom protocol based on WireGuard technology.
Beyond that, its sprawling network of 9,500+ servers in 149 countries is also significantly more than what you get with Mozilla VPN. That’s good news for speed since, generally, you’ll see faster results if the server is close to your location.
Meanwhile, Mozilla VPN offers only one protocol: the lightning-fast WireGuard. However, if you take a look at our VPN speed test tool, you’ll see that WireGuard, though incredibly fast, still comes in second to NordLynx. Plus, depending on your location, Mozilla VPN’s small server fleet could also be detrimental to speed.
During our tests, NordVPN’s speed in the US was 769Mbps download and 205Mbps upload (compared to the 600Mbps baseline for the upload speed), with an 83% retention rate. Meanwhile, Mozilla VPN showed 401Mbps download and 20Mbps upload speeds, with a 42% retention rate. The results were similar across different locations. As you can see, NordVPN is twice as fast as Mozilla VPN.
Overall, you can expect decent speeds from both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN. However, between them, NordVPN is much faster – especially if you’re using its NordLynx protocol.
Netflix and streaming capabilities
When it comes to streaming, there’s really no competition – NordVPN easily takes the lead. It consistently excels at bypassing geo-restrictions and is widely recognized as one of the best VPNs for streaming from around the world.
In contrast, Mozilla VPN struggles to unblock most streaming services. I successfully accessed Netflix US, UK, Japan, and Australia regions, Hulu, and DAZN Germany while using Mozilla VPN. However, it failed to unblock other regions’ Netflix libraries as well as streaming services like HBO Max, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer.
| Platform | NordVPN | Mozilla VPN |
| Netflix | ✅ US, UK, Canada, Germany, Japan, and others | ✅ US, UK, Japan, and Australia |
| Amazon Prime Video | ✅ | ❌ |
| Hulu | ✅ | ✅ US |
| HBO Max | ✅ | ❌ |
| Disney+ | ✅ | ❌ |
| BBC iPlayer | ✅ | ❌ |
| DAZN | ✅ | ✅ Germany |
NordVPN offers SmartDNS technology that lets you unblock geo-restricted content even on platforms that don’t support VPN apps natively, such as certain smart TVs and game consoles.
Torrenting
Both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN are good VPNs for torrenting but NordVPN has an advantage yet again. To start, you can torrent on all of its servers. However, its dedicated P2P servers are optimized for torrenting and will have no problem handling large transfers of data. This translates to better speeds. Plus, NordVPN also comes with SOCKS5 proxy, which offers faster download speeds.
As for Mozilla VPN, it doesn’t offer much information about its torrenting capabilities and methods. However, since it’s piggybacking off Mullvad’s network, I can deduce that it’s similarly P2P-friendly. To test it, I downloaded a 5.7GB Ubuntu 24 client, and it only took me 2 minutes, so it’s fair to say that Mozilla VPN supports torrenting.
NordVPN vs Mozilla VPN: price comparison
Both Mozilla VPN and NordVPN continue to offer simple and transparent pricing, but NordVPN provides more plan options. With either provider, you’ll find the best value and lowest monthly rates when you opt for a long-term subscription. On top of that, both services include a 30-day money-back guarantee, letting you test them out risk-free before committing.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| Monthly | From $12.99 | $9.99 |
| 1-year plan | From $4.99/month | $4.99/month |
| 2-year plan | From $3.09/month | N/A |
Mozilla VPN is cheaper than NordVPN if we look solely at monthly pricing. It's true that its monthly plan is more affordable; however, NordVPN’s yearly plan is slightly cheaper. Also, unlike NordVPN, Mozilla VPN doesn’t offer a 2-year plan, which is where NordVPN provides the lowest monthly rate.
It's important to consider that Mozilla VPN offers significantly fewer features compared to NordVPN. Simply comparing prices without factoring in the value provided at those prices may not paint a fair picture.
In addition to a 30-day money-back guarantee, NordVPN Android users can claim a 3-day free trial. Mozilla VPN, as far as I could find, doesn’t offer free trials. Its payment options are also more limited, only accepting cards and PayPal, while NordVPN also accepts Google Pay and cryptocurrencies.
Price tags aside, a NordVPN subscription covers up to 10 simultaneous connections, while Mozilla VPN allows only up to 5 connections. NordVPN previously had a much lower connection limit, but it increased it based on user feedback. This is quite a significant difference, as with a 5-device limit, you’ll likely face issues with maxing out the connections. In contrast, a 10-device limit is usually sufficient to cover all the devices in most households.
Server locations
In terms of server selection and locations, NordVPN clearly outshines Mozilla VPN. As shown in the table below, NordVPN not only offers a greater number of servers overall but also leads in every category, providing broader coverage and more flexibility for users.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| Servers | 9,500+ | 500+ |
| Countries | 149 | 30 |
| Virtual locations | Yes | No |
| Specialty servers | Multiple | Double VPN (multi-hop) |
Comparing NordVPN and Mozilla VPN in this category is straightforward because NordVPN offers significantly more. It has a larger number of servers spread across more global locations, nearly 70 virtual servers, and various specialty servers to choose from. In contrast, Mozilla VPN only provides a Double VPN option and has no virtual servers.
This lack of servers and locations is a serious downside to Mozilla VPN, as fewer servers also mean reduced streaming opportunities, a lesser variety for customers to exploit, and a less innovative approach in general. It also means that even if Mozilla VPN was significantly cheaper, it still couldn’t offer as much as NordVPN.
Features overview
NordVPN clearly stands out in the features department when compared to Mozilla VPN. It not only covers all the essentials but also goes above and beyond with a range of advanced features.
In contrast, Mozilla VPN’s feature lineup is on the slimmer side. While it has introduced quite a few tools since its release, the VPN still lacks certain notable features.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| Split tunneling | ✅ | ✅ |
| Kill switch | ✅ | ✅ |
| Ad blocker | ✅ | ✅ |
| Multi-hop | ✅ | ✅ |
| Specialty servers | ✅ | ❌ |
| SmartDNS | ✅ | ❌ |
Split tunneling
Split tunneling is an extremely helpful feature that lets you choose which apps or websites need VPN protection and which ones can connect to the internet directly. This control means that you can decide when to prioritize security and when to put speed first. It also eliminates the inconvenience of having to disconnect from the VPN when you want to access the internet directly.
Mozilla VPN offers split tunneling on Windows, Linux, and Android, while NordVPN also offers it on macOS. However, neither provider includes split tunneling on iOS due to system restrictions.
Kill switch
NordVPN and Mozilla VPN also come with the indispensable kill switch, which disconnects your device from the internet in case your VPN connection drops. This helps keep your IP address and location hidden, no matter what.
During my tests, NordVPN’s kill switch worked perfectly. What I found unique is that it offers two types of kill switches: a system-wide kill switch, which disables all internet access, and an app kill switch, which disables only specific apps. On Android, iOS, and Linux, you can’t control this feature as it’s enabled by default.
Similarly, Mozilla VPN also has a kill switch, which is enabled by default. There’s no option to turn it off, which is helpful to prevent accidental deactivation but could be a pain if the kill switch malfunctions.
Ad blocker
Both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN also include an ad blocker in their packages. In NordVPN’s case, you get Threat Protection to avoid cyberthreats like malware and trackers. This feature plays a few roles – including blocking ads and trackers, scanning files before downloads, identifying threats, and preventing visits to potentially malicious websites.
Likewise, Mozilla VPN’s ad blocker blocks annoying pop-up ads and protects your devices against online threats. You can even tweak the level of protection between standard, strict, and custom. However, note that users have complained that the strict level of protection sometimes blocks legitimate windows, which isn’t ideal.
Other features
Besides the above features, both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN have more to offer. Between them, NordVPN has a significantly longer list of additional features.
Some noteworthy NordVPN features include:
-
SmartDNS. It lets you unblock geo-restricted content on platforms that don’t support VPN apps.
-
Specialty servers. This includes Double VPN, which sends your traffic through two servers instead of one for an additional layer of security and privacy, onion over VPN, which combines your connection with The Onion Router (Tor) network for added privacy and to avoid heavy surveillance, and a dedicated IP feature, which gives you a unique and fixed IP address. The dedicated IP is available for mobile and desktop apps as well as browser extensions.
- Dark web monitor. It scans the dark web and alerts you about leakage of email addresses, phone numbers, credit cards, national IDs, and Social Security numbers.
As for Mozilla VPN, its honorable mentions include:
- Multi-account containers. It separates different activities into different tabs to boost privacy.
- Multi-hop. This feature routes your activity through an entry VPN server and then through an exit VPN server for extra privacy.
NordVPN vs Mozilla VPN: which one is safer?
Both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN offer strong security, and Mozilla VPN recently improved by switching to RAM-only servers through its partnership with Mullvad. This upgrade has enhanced its overall safety. However, NordVPN still holds an edge thanks to additional features and six independent no-logs audits, which further reinforce its reputation for privacy and security.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| Encryption | AES-256-GCM and ChaCha20 | ChaCha20 |
| Hash | SHA-512 | SHA-512 |
| RAM servers | Yes | Yes |
| Based in the Fourteen Eyes alliance? | No | Yes |
| No-logs policy | Yes, audited | Yes, not audited |
| Kill switch | Yes | Yes |
| Ad blocker | Yes | Yes |
| DNS leak protection | Yes | Yes |
As it is apparent from this summary, NordVPN is more secure. Both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN use advanced encryption and offer some very handy additional security features, such as a kill switch and DNS leak protection. However, NordVPN has the lead because it escapes the danger of surveillance and intelligence-sharing, thanks to its Panama-based jurisdiction. Plus, NordVPN’s no-logs policy has recently been audited for the sixth time.
Meanwhile, Mozilla VPN has a few things going against it. For starters, it’s based in the US, which isn’t exactly privacy-friendly since it’s part of the Five Eyes alliance. Also, while it had security audits, most notably by Cure53, there are no records of Mozilla VPN getting its no-logs claims independently audited and confirmed.
Infrastructure
NordVPN uses RAM-only servers, which have a few advantages in terms of security, performance, and agility. Security-wise, there’s no hard drive to store data like usage logs. Plus, all data stored on RAM-only servers is wiped upon each reboot. This means that a remote reboot can be initiated in case of a breach to protect anonymity and privacy. Mozilla VPN has migrated to RAM-only servers, which makes it much more secure. Judging by this category alone, both Mozilla VPN and NordVPN can offer solid privacy and security.
Privacy
NordVPN uses a market-leading AES-256 data encryption and ChaCha20 with NordLynx. Mozilla VPN, however, only uses ChaCha20. Both algorithms will keep you safe, though NordVPN has that extra layer of security. Their main difference, however, lies in their tunneling protocols.
NordVPN supports 3 protocols and leaves the ultimate decision in your hand. It offers:
- NordLynx. NordVPN’s proprietary protocol is based on WireGuard. Fast and using cutting-edge cryptography, the protocol is great for streaming and gaming.
- OpenVPN. It runs on either TCP or UDP internet protocol. It’s often regarded as the best protocol for privacy because of its strong encryption.
- IKEv2/IPSec. Fast and secure, this protocol is mobile-friendly and has great network-switching capabilities.
- NordWhisper. This is another protocol built by NordVPN, which helps to bypass network restrictions and censorship.
In contrast, Mozilla VPN offers only WireGuard, which is great for optimizing performance because of its streamlined code. However, this protocol isn’t ideal for bypassing restrictions, which means you may face challenges when trying to connect to restricted networks or in countries with strict internet censorship.
Logging
NordVPN and Mozilla VPN pledge that your data won’t be logged. However, NordVPN wins this round of Mozilla VPN vs NordVPN because it backs up its no-logs claims with independent audits.
NordVPN has undergone 6 public audits, which confirmed its no-logs policy. The most recent one was done by Deloitte. Plus, it also operates under the jurisdiction of Panama, which is outside the Fourteen Eyes alliance.
In contrast, Mozilla VPN has nothing much to offer in this regard except for claims that it has a strict no-logs policy. You either have to take its word for it or pass on it. Unfortunately, the fact that it’s based in the US doesn’t help its case in appearing as privacy-friendly, either. The US is the founding member of the Five Eyes data-sharing alliance, which means Mozilla VPN is obligated to hand over any user data when requested.
Platforms, interface, and ease of use
Both Mozilla VPN and NordVPN offer solid compatibility across various operating systems and feature user-friendly interfaces, making them accessible even for beginners. However, NordVPN stands out with a few extra perks, such as a wider selection of browser extensions and support for more simultaneous connections, giving it a slight advantage over Mozilla VPN.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| Supported OS | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS | Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS |
| Other software and devices | Kodi, Android TVs, Fire devices | ❌ |
| Browser extensions | Chrome, Edge, Firefox | Firefox |
| Simultaneous connections | 10 | 5 |
NordVPN and Mozilla VPN support all the major operating systems on the market. However, that’s where their similarity ends, and NordVPN speeds ahead in the Mozilla VPN vs NordVPN comparison.
For starters, NordVPN also supports other software and devices like various smart TVs as well as browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Additionally, it allows up to 10 simultaneous connections.
In stark contrast, Mozilla VPN doesn’t support any other platforms beyond the main ones. Although its browser extension is free, it’s only available on Firefox. Plus, it only allows up to 5 simultaneous connections.
Desktop apps
NordVPN’s desktop apps are easy to use, modern, and intuitive for Windows and macOS users. What sets NordVPN apart is that it offers a graphical user interface (GUI) for Linux. While few VPN providers support Linux operating systems, even fewer provide a user-friendly GUI for it.
While they used to be different, nowadays both Windows and macOS NordVPN apps offer the same functionality and very similar interfaces.
Although they look the same, Mozilla VPN’s Windows app is more functional than its macOS app. You get all the features on Windows, but not even split tunneling on macOS. And while you don’t get a GUI for Linux (just a command line), it’s still pretty straightforward.
Mobile apps
NordVPN and Mozilla VPNs’ mobile apps are responsive, clean, and easy to navigate. However, as usual, both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN’s Android apps have more features than their iOS counterparts.
In NordVPN’s case, its Android app is packed with features like a kill switch, split tunneling, auto-connect, Call Protection to detect spam phone calls, and Smart Troubleshooting Wizard for quick help with VPN issues. You also get OpenVPN and NordLynx protocols with the app. Meanwhile, its iOS version houses fewer features but has the advantage of allowing IKEv2, OpenVPN, and NordLynx protocols.
As for Mozilla VPN’s mobile app, it’s far less functional. However, you’ll still find features like server selection, split tunneling, and a kill switch. Just bear in mind that its iOS app is even more sparse and doesn’t support split tunneling.
Customer support
Both NordVPN and Mozilla VPN provide a variety of customer support resources, including help centers, tutorials, and email support. However, NordVPN stands out with its 24/7 live chat, allowing you to get immediate help anytime you need it – something Mozilla VPN currently does not offer. If quick and direct support is important to you, NordVPN is the stronger choice in this regard.
| NordVPN | Mozilla VPN | |
| 24/7 live chat | ✅ | ❌ |
| Email/ticketing system | ✅ | ✅ |
| Phone | ❌ | ❌ |
| Guides or articles | ✅ | ✅ |
| FAQ | ✅ | ✅ |
NordVPN is undeniably the victor of this round of Mozilla VPN vs NordVPN since it offers more customer support options. Having 24/7 support is a huge perk, as this means you can get quick help at any time.
For Mozilla VPN, your best bet is to hit up its help center for relevant articles and guides. Otherwise, you could also send an email, but be prepared for a long wait for answers. Obviously, this is far from ideal when you need a rapid solution.
Conclusion
During my tests, NordVPN performed better in terms of speed, features, streaming, and torrenting. Mozilla VPN stands out for its simplicity, privacy-focused approach, and cheaper monthly plan. Still, it lacks the performance, server coverage, and advanced tools needed to compete fully. Overall, NordVPN is the clear winner, offering a more complete, powerful, and reliable VPN experience for most users.
