This “Jesus-centric” mobile network wants to purge the internet

Phone operator T-Mobile will host a new network, Radiant Mobile, that promises a “Jesus-centric” experience free of pornography and LGBTQ+ content.

The network promises built-in censorship for all pornography, even for adult account holders, and a default filter against “gender and trans-related” content, which the user can toggle on and off.

Radiant Mobile founder Paul Fisher told MIT Technology Review that the platform would be “void of pornography, void of LGBT, void of trans.”

The monthly plan costs $30, with a portion donated to the church.

And in terms of upscaling, Radiant plans to expand beyond the US, potentially into countries like Mexico and South Korea.

There are also faith-based extras thrown into the mix, including Bible stories (with characters like Snow White), holy testimonials, and religious-themed kids' games.

Radiant Mobile has a TikTok account, and when Cybernews investigated, we found a selection of videos uploaded, featuring several religious influencers.

One video featured a speaker claiming it made sense to make the transition at the same price as if you're already on T-Mobile, while gushing: “You get our cybersecurity, and you get the fact that we can block inappropriate content at the network level.”

In fact, across a few of the videos, the manifesto seemed to be “we’re taking back the internet.”

Radiant relies on the Israeli cybersecurity firm Allot to categorize and block domains at the network level, so content is blocked before it reaches the end device.

Dubious categories, including porn, violence, self-harm, “sects,” and sexuality, would all be explicitly blocked, but of course, there are grey areas that exist.

One example of this is Yale University’s website, which features an LGBTQ subdomain that advertises events such as pride and graduation ceremonies.

As it stands, a mobile filter would flag such a page under “education,” but Fisher speculated that if LGBTQ were to feature as flagship content “on the front pages consistently,” then Yale would also be blocked.

The latest promotional video on Radiant Mobile’s TikTok channel shows a list of what the “Radiant Shield” currently blocks out.

Among the usual suspects of pornography and gambling are inclusions such as dating, glamour, piercings, and tattoos.

By shifting control from apps to infrastructure, Radiant Mobile is set to "play God” by deciding what is considered inappropriate and what disappears entirely, and not allowing them to be part of the discussion.
