NordVPN is the best VPN for multiple devices. It allows you to protect up to 6 devices at a time, has applications for all popular platforms, works with non-VPN devices, and ensures unbreakable protection.

Applications. You can have it on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and most smart TVs. Compared to other VPNs, NordVPN is one of only a few services to have a dedicated tvOS app. It also has a SmartPlay feature that allows it to work with devices that don’t initially support VPNs.

Features. NordVPN is one of a few VPNs that doesn’t exclude any features from different apps, as ExpressVPN does, for example. With all NordVPN apps, you get a kill switch, Meshnet, Dark Web Monitoring, and split tunneling. There’s also Threat Protection to block adware, malware, and malicious sites and protect you from trackers.

Servers. With over 6100 servers in 61 countries, you can use NordVPN to watch Japanese content on your smart TV and let your kid browse US content on their smartphone simultaneously. When reviewing NordVPN, we found it has specialized servers, like obfuscated ones to mask your VPN connection, P2P-optimized servers, and a Double VPN feature.

Price. NordVPN starts off at $3.39/month and has a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 7-day free trial.

You can hardly find a household where a single operating system dominates. After all, even Apple products have different OS, and the apps for them differ. Likewise, VPN applications differ from platform to platform, offering particular functionality and features.

With that in mind, it’s rather crucial for a VPN not only to allow multiple simultaneous connections but also to offer device-personalized apps that wouldn’t make your browsing experience worse.

Why do I need a VPN for multiple devices?

VPNs aren’t just for desktop computers - they’re useful for all your devices, from smart TVs to smartphones. VPNs offer a range of features, including:

  • Security – VPNs keep you safe from hackers through encryption and malware blockers.
  • Privacy – VPNs enable you to hide your online activity from your ISP, and they can change your IP address so any website you’re visiting won’t be able to see your true location.
  • Unlocking content – most of the big streaming services have different content libraries in different regions, and they’re usually geo-restricted, meaning you can’t access them from other countries. With a VPN, you can completely bypass this by connecting to a server in the country where the site you want to visit is based.
  • Share encrypted connection with the family. A VPN with multiple simultaneous connections allows you to share the connection among multiple devices. Hence, any of your close ones will be able to stay protected with a VPN, too.

Aside from these features, you might also want to share a VPN subscription with family, friends, or work colleagues. The more simultaneous connections your VPN offers, the more people can use it – it’s like having a VPN family plan.

How to set up a VPN for multiple devices

Setting up a VPN on multiple devices is easy, you just need to sign up, download the specific app, and install it on your device.

  1. Subscribe to a multi-device VPN service, like NordVPN, and create an account
  2. Download the VPN app on one of your devices
  3. Log in with your credentials and connect to a preferred server
  4. Download the VPN app on any other devices you need
  5. Log in with the same details
  6. You can download the app on as many devices as the VPN provider allows you to

There’s also an option of installing the VPN on your router. The instructions can differ depending on the VPN brand. Thankfully, most VPNs will have a step-by-step guide you can refer to. But bear in mind that once you set it up on the router, your location will change on your whole network when you connect to a specific server.

Do we recommend a free VPN for multiple devices?

Technically, you can use a free VPN for multiple devices, but we don’t recommend it.

Free VPNs are usually a lot less efficient than those requiring a paid subscription. They’ll likely have fewer servers, slower speeds, and won't be as good at connecting to streaming websites. Also, since the VPN is free, you can expect annoying ads in their apps, and they may even sell your personal data to earn the money they don’t get from subscriptions.

Alternatively, we suggest you opt for a premium service, taking advantage of its free trial or a money-back guarantee. This way you’ll be able to test the service risk-free and see if it fits your needs, before committing long-term. We recommend NordVPN or Surfshark for that.

  • NordVPN offers a 7-day free trial to anyone with an Android device. You can also go with the 30-day money-back guarantee to test its services
  • Surfshark’s 7-day free trial is available on Android and iOS app stores. Another testing option is taking advantage of its 30-day money-back policy

As a whole, if you’re looking for a VPN that could secure all your personal devices or act as a family VPN, you’re in luck. Simply look for a VPN with multiple simultaneous connections.

To help you out with the choice, we’ve shortlisted 7 most reliable VPNs for multiple devices. While all options on this list are great for the job, our top choice is NordVPN. It offers top-notch protection for your household with intuitive apps and market-leading pricing.

Hello! As OpenVPN is open-source, it should actually be free. For so many devices, I advise you to set up your own OpenVPN server.

They are all not really suited for Linux. What would you recommend for vpns that allow multiple devices (over 5) with good Linux interface?
CyberNews Team

Mullvad (5), PIA (10), TorGuard (8) each have GUI and support five or more simultaneous connections for Linux.

do i need a separate vpn app for each device if i already have a vpn setup on router at home?
CyberNews Team
prefix 2 years ago
No, if you’ve already set up a VPN on your router, you don’t have to install the apps on your devices separately. Though it’s not a bad idea to have an app just for the cases when you want to use a VPN, and you’re away from home.
prefix 2 years ago
WOW! Surfshark seems like such a good choice if you have multiple devices because I don’t want to put vpn on a router. I do have a Mac though and even if I don’t really care about the whitelister since you can always turn off your vpn and I actually prefer it that way but what is Shadowsocks? I can see they don’t offer it for Surfshark but maybe it’s not really something I need? I’m kinda rooting for this service to work out for me.
CyberNews Team
prefix 2 years ago
Shadowsocks is a tunneling protocol that doesn’t have any traits associated with VPN usage. This means that you won’t be detected as a VPN user, which can be necessary to bypass restrictions in censorship-heavy countries.
