Best e-commerce hosting testing methodology

Along with the Cybernews research team, I evaluated %%numberofeviews_hosting%% website hosts. We built real WooCommerce websites, simulated traffic, analyzed pricing, and measured speed to see how each provider performed in real-life scenarios.

Our website hosting test process ensures that our recommendation aligns with users’ needs. :

Our testing process

To try out the hosting providers, we set up an e-commerce website using WordPress with WooCommerce installed using the stock Storefront theme. We decided on this setup as WooCommerce is one of the most popular e-commerce tools on the market, and its stock theme provides the best stability.

We then generated 150 products to simulate a small businesses’ stock. Each product included a description and a product image to see how the website deals with loading content.

For each provider, we picked the recommended e-commerce plan based on the information we found on their website. We then linked our test domains and began testing. We looked at ease of sign-up, pricing transparency, and data center location options.

Performance and uptime testing

We ran three performance tests on each provider: page load speed tests to see how fast it loads in a real-life scenario, stress tests to see how it handles traffic spikes, and uptime tests over 30 days to confirm reliability in long-term conditions.

To help you compare the products, I’ve prepared a summary table with the results of our tests:

Pricing analysis

For pricing, I looked at not just the introductory prices, but also the pricing implemented after the initial promotional term. Here’s a breakdown:

HostingerFrom $2.69/month$16.99/monthDepending on the tier, email may cost extra, and shorter terms face higher renewals; additional backups also require add-ons30 days
IONOSFrom $1.00/month$14.00/monthInitial promo rates increase upon renewal, and certain advanced security tools are billed as extras30 days
BluehostFrom $1.99/month$21.99/monthAfter the first year, domain renewals are charged at regular rates, and trials for email and business tools transition to paid services30 days
DreamHostFrom $1.99/month$10.99/monthSome shared plans do not include free email, and the DreamShield malware scanner is a paid extra30 days (90 days for VPS and dedicated)
SiteGroundFrom $2.99/month$17.99/monthHigher-tier plans charge for priority support and advanced security, alongside a steep renewal hike30 days
ScalaHostingFrom $2.51/month$11.95/monthUpgrading VPS resources and accessing select premium support options will incur additional feesAnytime, unconditional

Liquid WebFrom $3.5/month$5.00/monthWhile most premium features are included, scaling up resources or adding specific extensions will increase your bill30 days

Scoring criteria

In order to evaluate each product, I’ve applied the following criteria to the list:

  1. E-commerce features (30%). For the hosting provider to get on this list, it had to provide sufficient features for e-commerce sites, such as management features like a cPanel or a custom version of it. In addition, I looked for features like free SSL, business emails, 1-click installation, easy WordPress/WooCommerce, and PrestaShop CMS setup functionalities.
  2. Performance (25%). Performance is very important for an e-commerce site. Therefore, I only picked the providers that, during our tests, met the required average server response time under 1600ms and fully loaded time of up to 3s for the best performance. I tested the uptime and server average response time with Grafana, website loading speed with GTMetrix, and visitors' load with K6.io tools.
  3. Security (25%). I researched the security capabilities of these hosting providers so you can safely host your website and protect your customer data. I checked and selected only those providers that offer firewall protection, comply with PCI (Payment Card Industry) rules, protect against DDoS attacks, and provide automatic backups.
  4. Customer support (10%). I made sure that my selected providers have efficient customer support available for any issue that might arise, from hosting your e-commerce site, feature implementation, to any performance or security questions.
  5. Pricing (10%). I also focused on affordable pricing. However, I made sure that low pricing didn’t affect the quality of services offered by each provider.

How to choose an e-commerce host

When picking a host for your online store, ask a few crucial questions:

  1. Is it fast and reliable? Slow speeds can drive potential customers away in seconds. Look for hosts that offer 99.9% uptime and consistently strong performance during traffic spikes.
  2. Is it safe? Make sure your host implements strong security measures, such as free SSL certificates and regular backups. This way, you can protect your website and your customers.
  3. Is it easy to use? You shouldn’t need profound technical knowledge to manage an online store. Prioritize hosts with a simple dashboard and 1-click install – it will make your life easier.
  4. Does it have store-friendly features? Ensure that your host supports WooCommerce, Shopify, or other platforms, and provide enough storage and bandwidth for growth.
  5. Can I upgrade later without complications? Your hosting solution should scale seamlessly as your store grows, ensuring minimal downtime and a smooth transition. Check whether a clear and flexible upgrade is available.
  6. Will support actually help me? Make sure that your preferred host provides 24/7 live chat support and detailed documentation to address any technical issues that may arise.
  7. Is the price fair after renewal? Many hosting solutions attract new customers with low introductory rates, but then increase them significantly after the first year. Check whether the renewal fees won’t break your budget.

Do I need hosting with PCI compliance for my store?

PCI compliance is a set of security standards that ensure companies create a secure environment for handling, storing, or transmitting credit card data. It protects cardholder data, reducing the risk of fraud.

Therefore, if you’re running an online store that processes payments directly, PCI compliance goes without saying. Even if you’re not handling payments directly, using a PCI-compliant host is a safer strategy, which is always a good approach for e-commerce.

Alternatives for e-commerce hosting

For e-commerce, you can pick from a few different types of hosting. Here are the main ones and what they are best for:

  • Website builders. You can use a website builder to create your e-commerce page. This way, you can customize your site and get useful SEO and marketing tools to grow your business. You can check out our list of the best website builders for small businesses for more information.
  • Cloud-based hosting. This is one of the most popular hosting types because it can support businesses of all sizes. Additionally, it is one of the most stable hosting types because it doesn’t take down the entire site if there's an issue with the servers.
  • Shared hosting. This is the best budget-friendly web hosting option for your site. In shared hosting, multiple sites are hosted on a shared server, so it’s best for small businesses with small to moderate traffic.
  • VPS hosting. This type of hosting is similar to shared hosting, as different sites share the same server. However, here each site has its own resources. It’s also a great option for those with less hosting experience.
  • Dedicated servers. This version offers dedicated servers for each site. You get the best performance results and flexible customization, but it’s not beginner-friendly.

Final thoughts

The market is full of web hosting providers claiming to offer the best e-commerce hosting. However, I advise you to be cautious when choosing a reliable e-commerce web host. There are several key factors that can help you pick a truly reliable e-commerce web hosting provider – excellent performance results, dedicated e-commerce features, and a strong security suite.

My top recommendation for web hosting for e-commerce is Hostinger. It demonstrated excellent performance, offers resource-rich plans, and has useful e-commerce-oriented features.

Ultimately, you should pick an e-commerce web hosting provider depending on your business needs. Before making the final decision, take time to identify and prioritize the features that will bring the most value to your business.
