Ten years of Apple Pay: what’s next?

What do people think of Apple Pay after ten years of the service?

Apple has reported that its payment service, which is available in 78 markets, is now used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Over the years, Apple has gained over 11,000 bank and network partners.

The company also conducted a survey to determine why people are using Apple Pay. The results showed that consumers find it easy to use and trust the privacy and security the service provides.

Since the survey was requested by the company, the question of what people actually think of Apple Pay remains.

“Really impressed with how convenient everything is now. Went to Japan and I could buy a transit card on Apple Pay that works EVERYWHERE (including restaurants and stores). Stayed at a hotel and I could check in and get a keycard before I even arrive,” shared one Reddit user.

10 years later, Apple Pay is amazing — and about to change

Apple also revealed that it will broaden its Apple Pay services by allowing users to “redeem rewards and access installment loans from Apple Pay-enabled issuers and lenders right at checkout with Apple Pay online and in-app.”

The company has also been working on its Apple Wallet, where users can add not only their payment cards but also transport tickets, keys, coupons, reward cards, and more.

In some states, Apple Wallet also allows you to add your ID and driver’s license, making “the entire wallet thing [...] pretty convenient,” notes another Reddit user.

One of the much-discussed aspects of Apple Pay is how tightly the company controls it. By not allowing third-party apps to access the tap-to-pay features, developers are forced to add cards through Apple Wallet and pay a fee.

“I don’t usually agree with Apple’s locked down approach, but in this case I do. It benefits the user to have one place to do all this, aka Apple Wallet and Apple Pay,” said one Redditor, also stating that with different payment apps, only banks and credit card companies are winning, but not the users.

More people online agreed with Apple’s approach to stay “locked in.” The company shared that this way, it provides security and privacy for its users.

“‘There’s an app for that’ is no longer a good thing. Unpopular opinion: Apple restricting the use of NFC to the Wallet was good for the consumer,” agreed another Redditor.

“The best part about Apple Wallet was that you don’t have to download 50 apps from all the credit card companies, transportation companies, airlines, etc,” noted another one.

Nevertheless, with the iOS18.1 update, Apple will loosen its restrictions by allowing third-party developers to enable tap-to-pay transactions in their apps. Users will also be able to choose a default app for contactless payments and change what happens when they double-click the power button.
