Sony might be working on a portable console that allows users to play PlayStation 5 games on the go.
The company intends to enter the portable gaming market with the new device, which could be seen as a future Nintendo rival.
The gaming console may be similar to the PlayStation Portal, a PlayStation 5 accessory released in 2023 that allows users to stream games online.
Considering the popularity of mobile gaming, the company might develop a new mobile device to appeal to more users.
If successful, it could follow in the footsteps of Nintendo Switch, which offers users the possibility of playing games on the go or by being connected to a TV. Nintendo’s next upgrade is expected to come out sometime in 2025.
It’s not yet clear when Sony’s device will be launched. However, according to Bloomberg, its release could be “years away," so don’t get your hopes up just yet.
The company also launched its disc-less gaming console this year – the PlayStation 5 Pro – priced at $700.
The news about Sony’s possible mobile gaming console also started a discussion online.
“Welcome back, PSP. I'll be there as long as they don't force you to buy a proprietary memory stick,” wrote one Reddit user.
“I have a modded Vita, and I [...] love it. I would love a new handheld,” another user stated, referring to the PlayStation Vita console, which was discontinued in 2019.
“And thus why I was rooting for the Portal to do well enough. Now if they can incorporate that where it can be used offline and with a semblance of storage for games, that would be amazing,” stated one Redditor, with another noting that “the portal was testing the market for interest in a handheld.”
However, some users were skeptical of the new product, saying, “PS5 on a handheld is hard to believe at this point. It's surely years away to get something at a decent price point and battery life."
