Best VPNs for Samsung TV + 4 ways to set up VPN on Samsung TV

You can use a VPN on a Samsung TV, but since Samsung Smart TVs run on the Tizen operating system, you can't install a VPN app directly on the TV. Instead, you'll need to use workarounds like setting up a VPN on your router, using a streaming device with built-in VPN support, or sharing a VPN connection from your computer. These methods enable you to bypass content restrictions and enhance your privacy while streaming on your Samsung TV.

In this article, I’m going to provide you with a list of the best Samsung TV VPNs for 2025. I will also walk you through how to set up a VPN on Samsung TV step-by-step, explain why having a VPN on your home devices is useful, and will introduce you to the best VPNs out there.

Top 5 best VPNs for Samsung TV in 2025

How to install a VPN on Samsung Smart TV

Samsung Smart TVs don’t support VPNs. The only exception is a Smart TV with Android operating system that would have a Google Play store from which a TV-compatible VPN app can be downloaded. That’s why, depending on your chosen VPN provider, there are alternative ways to install a VPN on your Samsung Smart TV. Here’s a short summary:

Clicking on either of these links will direct you to a more detailed guide below. Alternatively, you can read about each method and pick the one that best suits your Smart TV and VPN.

Set up a VPN on Samsung TV via router

Each VPN provider has its own method of router installation, especially since they might support different router models. So, for example, the instructions that NordVPN might provide can differ from those of ExpressVPN. However, the basics are pretty much the same. You would need to have your router-compatible VPN, install a VPN router firmware (when they’re compatible, it doesn’t require much technical knowledge), link your Samsung Smart TV to the router, connect to a server, and that’s it.

Set up a VPN on Samsung TV via Smart DNS

While not all VPNs have Smart DNS or SmartPlay, those that do offer an easy way to link a VPN to a Smart TV. All you would need to do is activate the Smart DNS feature, configure Smart TV network settings to manually enter DNS settings, type in the DNS addresses that your VPN provides, and restart the TV to fully enable the feature. From then on, you should be able to stream content on whichever server you prefer.

Set up a VPN on Samsung TV by downloading the app

As Samsung Smart TV does not have the option to download the app from an app store, you’d need to pair it with TV sticks that would have that option. Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, or any modem with an Android operating system can provide a way to download a VPN as an app and freely stream your preferred content.

Set up a VPN on Samsung TV by sharing connection from PC

If none of the methods work, there’s also a way to simply share a VPN connection from your PC. Since pretty much all VPNs support PCs, you’d just need to download the app, enable hotspotting, configure Smart TV Wi-Fi settings to connect to your PC’s hotspot and change the VPN server on your PC. That should allow you to stream without setting up a VPN directly on your Smart TV.

Why do you need a VPN for a Samsung Smart TV

With a reliable VPN, you can not only bypass various geo-restrictions but also boost your privacy. Here are some in-depth insights on why it’s worth considering getting a best VPN for Samsung TV:

  • Bypass geo-restrictions. With a VPN you can unlock different streaming platforms and libraries, such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. Some apps on the TV’s app store can be restricted in your region. Hence, a VPN can help to unlock these apps.
  • Get around bandwidth throttling. If your traffic is unencrypted, the ISP can see everything you do on the internet, slowing down your streaming speeds. With a reliable VPN on your router, you can prevent ISP Internet throttling.
  • Stay private and secure. Having a VPN on your smart TV will enhance security, as VPNs encrypt the user’s traffic and hide your IP. Therefore, third parties cannot interfere with it.

The step-by-step instructions were clear, allowing me to unblock multiple libraries across various streaming platforms with ease.

In my experience, NordVPN truly excels as a streaming VPN. It effortlessly unblocks Netflix libraries from around the world, as well as other services like Hulu and BBC iPlayer. With over 7100 servers in 118 countries, I had no trouble finding the right server to access content from any region on my Samsung Smart TV. The NordLynx protocol consistently delivered top-tier connection speeds, which translated to smooth, lag-free streaming even in high definition.

From a privacy and security standpoint, NordVPN doesn’t disappoint. The independently audited no-logs policy gave me peace of mind, knowing my data was secure. Features like AES-256 and ChaCha20 encryption, along with a reliable kill switch, ensured that my online activities remained private and protected at all times.

I was particularly impressed by the speed retention during our research team’s tests. NordVPN managed to retain 90% of my original internet speeds, which meant I could stream content buffer-free.

Finally, NordVPN offers great value for its service. With plans starting from $3.39/month and a 30-day money-back guarantee, it’s competitively priced among top-tier providers. For anyone with a Samsung Smart TV looking for a reliable VPN, NordVPN is an excellent choice.

2. Surfshark – affordable and easy to set up Samsung Smart TV VPN

Servers/countries:
3200+ servers in 100 countries

Surfshark is another excellent VPN for Samsung TV, particularly for those looking to connect multiple devices at once, as it allows an unlimited number of simultaneous connections. From my experience, Surfshark offers exceptional compatibility with Samsung Smart TVs, making it a top choice for users who want seamless streaming and security on their TV.

One of Surfshark’s standout features is its Smart DNS, which I found incredibly easy to activate on my Samsung Smart TV. This feature is the simplest way to unblock streaming content on your TV, allowing you to access various platforms effortlessly.

In addition to Smart DNS, Surfshark offers flexible setup options for Samsung TV users. Whether configuring the VPN on a router or sharing the connection via a computer, I had no trouble accessing all of Surfshark’s powerful features. These include a reliable kill switch to keep your connection secure, top-class encryption, and an audited no-logs policy that ensures your online activity on your Samsung Smart TV remains private.

In our tests, Surfshark delivered top speeds, largely thanks to its use of the WireGuard tunneling protocol. This was particularly beneficial for streaming on my Samsung Smart TV, where Surfshark excelled at bypassing geo-blocks. I easily unblocked Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max, and other popular platforms on my Samsung TV. With over 3200 servers in 100 countries, Surfshark gives you the freedom to access content from almost any region around the world.

In terms of speed, Surfshark is second only to NordVPN, retaining 86% of my original internet speeds during testing. This ensured that streaming on my Samsung Smart TV was smooth and lag-free. If you have other smart TVs in your home, Surfshark also offers dedicated apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Google TV, making it easy to set up a VPN connection on those devices as well.

Moreover, Surfshark is very budget-friendly, with plans starting at just $2.19/month. Plus, you can try it out risk-free with a 7-day free trial or a 30-day money-back guarantee – making it an excellent value for Samsung Smart TV users.

3. Proton VPN – Samsung Smart TV VPN with free and premium plans

Servers/countries:
9900+ servers in 117 countries
Simultaneous connections:10
Unblocks:Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, HBO Max, Disney+
Current deal:Get up to 64% OFF ProtonVPN

Proton VPN is a great option for easy Samsung Smart TV setup and a free, but very limited, version. Since the main subscription is quite pricey, if you don’t mind having just 5 available server locations, then the Proton VPN free version can be the cheapest option for you.

While the free version is not as good with streaming platforms, premium Proton VPN successfully unblocked all tested sites, like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Max, and YouTube TV on Samsung Smart TV. I also found the whole setup process remarkably easy, thanks to a detailed knowledge base and Smart DNS. Premium Proton VPN is also better for speed, as I encountered no buffering issues, and the speed retention was 85% of my original network speed.

Proton VPN has Apple TV and Android TV apps, but for Samsung Smart TV, due to a different operating system, you would need to follow router setup guidelines. Proton VPN supports several different models, and for each, there’s an extensive guide on its official website. Of course, if your Smart TV has Google Play, then you only need to download the app, and you’re good to go.

Just like all premium VPNs, Proton VPN has great security and privacy features, such as an audited no-logs policy, market-leading data encryption, and, for premium subscriptions only, NetShield ad blocker. Privacy-conscious users can also get the advantage of Tor over VPN – the anonymity network for completely private browsing.

While the free version is tempting, it’s very limited compared to the premium one. Besides, it might not work as well with Samsung Smart TV or cause lag due to low server numbers. So, I recommend going for a premium subscription, which costs $3.59/month. Additionally, you would get a 30-day money-back guarantee.

4. IPVanish – solid speeds VPN excellent for streaming on your smart TV

During my IPVanish testing, I successfully set up the VPN on a router, which supports high-end RT series Asus, DD-WRT, and Tomato-flashed routers. This setup allowed me to unblock a variety of streaming platforms on my Samsung Smart TV, including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube. While IPVanish doesn’t offer a Smart DNS feature, the router setup proved effective and straightforward. Additionally, the option to connect via a hotspot and the availability of useful resources made the process even smoother.

IPVanish is also quite affordable, with prices starting at just $2.19/month. For those who want to test the service before committing, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 7-day free trial, making it a risk-free option for enhancing your Samsung Smart TV experience.

expressVPN-banner

Servers/countries:Servers in 105 countries
Simultaneous connections:8
Unblocks:Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and more
Current deal:Now up to 49% OFF + 3 months FREE!

ExpressVPN is a high-quality VPN service that ranks as my fifth choice for Samsung Smart TVs. While it delivers excellent performance with strong security features and an extensive server network, it falls slightly behind some other options when considering value for Samsung TV users.

During our testing of ExpressVPN, I found the setup process on my Samsung Smart TV to be smooth and easy, even though Samsung TVs don’t support VPN apps directly. By configuring ExpressVPN on my router, I was able to unblock a variety of streaming platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and BBC iPlayer, all of which performed well on my Samsung Smart TV. The MediaStreamer Smart DNS feature was also effective in accessing geo-restricted content without sacrificing speed or security.

ExpressVPN’s vast network of servers in 105 countries provides broad access to global content on your Samsung TV. I was consistently able to stream from different regions with reliable, high-speed connections that ensured a buffer-free experience.

When it comes to security, ExpressVPN maintains its reputation with military-grade AES-256 encryption and a strict no-logs policy, ensuring complete privacy while using your Samsung Smart TV. The Network Lock kill switch adds another layer of security by preventing data leaks if the VPN connection drops. Additionally, the Lightway protocol is optimized for speed and reliability, which I appreciated when streaming high-definition content on my Samsung Smart TV.

ExpressVPN supports unlimited bandwidth and simultaneous connections, making it a solid option for households with multiple devices. However, it is priced higher than other VPNs in this ranking, with plans starting at $4.99/month. While the service quality is excellent, the cost may be a consideration for those looking for the best value. Still, with a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can try ExpressVPN risk-free and see if it meets your needs for Samsung TV.

For users with other smart TVs, ExpressVPN also offers dedicated apps for Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV, ensuring easy setup across various streaming devices.

An alternative way to watch geo-restricted content on Samsung TV

If all of the aforementioned VPN setup ways sound a bit confusing to you, there are alternatives. After all, configuring your router or activating Smart DNS can be a bit of a hassle. However, there are some very non-technical and simple alternatives to setting up a VPN on your Samsung TV. You could do one of the following:

  1. Connect to a VPN server on your PC and use an HDMI cable to stream geo-restricted content. This way, the connection will be secured, and you’ll be able to unlock Netflix’s or any other streaming platform’s libraries from anywhere in the world.
  2. Connect to a VPN on your phone and start screen mirroring. This has to be ultimately the easiest way to stream any content on Samsung TV through a VPN connection.

Do we recommend a free VPN for Samsung Smart TV

I don’t recommend a free VPN for Samsung TV. They can't unlock geo-restricted content like premium VPNs can. Free VPNs don't offer the same streaming support and only provide a limited number of server locations. Moreover, free VPNs might not have strong security measures and could even contain malware, putting all connected devices at risk.

However, premium VPNs often provide free trials and money-back guarantees with their paid plans, making them trustworthy choices as they offer robust features to attract customers. We recommend choosing a premium service to avoid speed issues, data tracking, annoying ads, and potential cyber threats.

  • NordVPN – market-leading VPN provider with robust security features. If you have an Android device, you can enjoy a 7-day trial for free. If not, you can opt for the 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
  • Surfshark – top VPN provider with fast speeds and unlimited connections. You can try out the service for free for 7 days by downloading the app from the Android or iOS app stores. Alternatively, you can opt for the 30-day money-back guarantee for a longer testing period.

What content can I unblock with a Samsung Smart TV VPN

Depending on the VPN, you’ll be able to unblock numerous streaming services and shows. Changing your location on a VPN to a region where the service is available will let you enjoy the content that is not available in your region.

Here are some of the most popular streaming services that you can unblock with a VPN:

I'm using NordVPN and the process as described above does not work.

I get the following message:

"SmartDNS couldn't be activated
It looks like your IP address is IPv6, which isn't supported by our systems yet."
Cybernews Team

Hi there! You can try disabling the SmartDNS feature in the account site and then enabling it again and activating it. Then you would need to change DNS addresses in the TV settings as well. Also, we highly recommend turning off the VPN when setting up the DNS in the account site, as the user's IPv4 has to be whitelisted. If that does not work, try disabling IPv6 on the router manually. Head over to router settings and browse to check if disabling IPv6 is available. Hope this helps!
