Using a Samsung TV VPN can improve your streaming experience in a number of ways. From unblocking your desired Netflix library to boosting your anonymity, a VPN offers it all and even more.

These methods enable you to bypass content restrictions and enhance your privacy while streaming on your Samsung TV.

Why do you need a VPN for a Samsung Smart TV

With a reliable VPN, you can not only bypass various geo-restrictions but also boost your privacy. Here are some in-depth insights on why it’s worth considering getting a best VPN for Samsung TV:

  • Bypass geo-restrictions. With a VPN you can unlock different streaming platforms and libraries, such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. Some apps on the TV’s app store can be restricted in your region. Hence, a VPN can help to unlock these apps.
  • Get around bandwidth throttling. If your traffic is unencrypted, the ISP can see everything you do on the internet, slowing down your streaming speeds. With a reliable VPN on your router, you can prevent ISP Internet throttling.
  • Stay private and secure. Having a VPN on your smart TV will enhance security, as VPNs encrypt the user’s traffic and hide your IP. Therefore, third parties cannot interfere with it.

How to use a VPN on TV

There are four main ways to use a VPN on your TV. You can choose the following:

Setting up VPNs varies in complexity. For example, configuring a VPN on your router may seem complex, as many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) don't support VPN connections on the routers they provide. Additionally, setting up this connection requires technical knowledge, such as flashing the router with different firmware.

Fortunately, you also have the option to install your VPN on a computer and then share that connection with your TV. Another choice is to set up Smart DNS.

Follow our step-by-step guidelines to install a VPN on your Samsung Smart TV.

1. How to set up a VPN on Samsung TV via PC connection sharing

Another way to get a VPN for Samsung TV on your router is to share a VPN connection from your PC. It’s one of the easier ways to set it up. However, it works on Windows PCs only. Additionally, for it to work, your device needs to be able to act as a hotspot. Besides mobile devices, your PC can act as hotspot, if it has a cellular data connection.

In order to set a VPN through Windows connection sharing, follow these steps:

  1. Choose a reliable VPN for your PC. Download a VPN to your PC, log in, or set up the account. I recommend using NordVPN
  2. Enable Mobile Hotspot on PC settings. Head over to the computer Settings and go to Network & Internet. Then look for Mobile Hotspot and enable it. You can adjust your personal information if needed.
  3. Configure settings on your smart TV. Go to Wi-Fi settings on your smart TV and connect to the device you just enabled the connection from
  4. Enjoy TV shows and movies on smart TV!

2. How to set up a VPN on Samsung TV via router

Installing a VPN on a router is an ideal option if you want to secure your whole home network. Setting up and installing a VPN for your smart TV via router is not a one-size-fits-all situation and will differ depending on the VPN provider used, router configuration, supported firmware, and more technicalities. In simple terms, not all VPN services support routers and vice versa.

Here are general instructions on how to set up a VPN on a Samsung TV via router:

  1. Check if your router can work with a VPN. Some routers don't have the necessary firmware, like DD-WRT or Tomato. If your router doesn't support VPNs right away, you can install different firmware, like DD-WRT or Tomato, to make it compatible
  2. Get a VPN and set up the account. I suggest NordVPN because it has simple installation instructions. Plus, its fast speeds ensure smooth watching on your Samsung TV
  3. Install a VPN router firmware. After logging in, decide where to install the VPN. If you select "Router," you'll need to pick your router's type and model. The steps may differ depending on your chosen VPN, so it's best to follow an official guide provided by the VPN provider
  4. Link your Samsung TV to the VPN router. You can connect it either through WiFi or using a LAN cable
  5. Finish the setup and connect to a server. After connecting, you'll see a setup screen for the VPN router. Just follow the instructions. Then, connect to a server in the country where you want to stream from
  6. Begin watching TV shows and movies. You can now enjoy a variety of global content on your Samsung Smart TV with different libraries of Amazon Prime, Max, Netflix, and other streaming services

3. How to set up a VPN on Samsung TV via Smart DNS

Not all VPN providers have a configuration for Smart DNS or SmartPlay. I recommend only the top-tier providers, such as NordVPN or Surfshark that will let you easily activate this feature. Here’s the easy method on how to set up a VPN on Samsung TV via Smart DNS:

  1. Visit your preferred VPN provider's website. Sign in if you already have an account, or create a new one if you don’t nordvpn-site
  2. Enable the Smart DNS feature on the dedicated page enable-smart-dns
  3. Wait for the confirmation email. Your provider will also show needed DNS details in the account section confirmation-email
  4. Configure your smart TV settings. Go to Network Settings on your Samsung Smart TV, select Network Status, and set DNS Settings to enter manually
  5. Type in DNS addresses given to you by a VPN provider
  6. Once the connection test is done, restart your TV and enjoy the unblocked content

Note: Keep in mind that this configuration method won’t secure the Internet's connection like a VPN does (meaning your traffic won’t be encrypted), it will still be susceptible to trackers, hackers, and malicious sites. Also, you will be able to unblock only a limited number of streaming services.

4. How to set up a VPN on a smart TV using a dedicated app

Many VPN providers offer apps specifically designed for streaming devices, making it easier to secure your streaming experience. If you own an Apple TV or an Amazon Fire Stick, it's highly recommended to install the VPN directly on these streaming devices since reputable services like NordVPN and Surfshark have dedicated apps for them. This approach is much simpler and more efficient than configuring a VPN on your router or using Smart DNS. Here’s how you do that:

  1. Go to the App Store or Play Store on your smart TV. A Samsung TV will have neither of these, but on any other smart TV you’ll be able to find it
  2. Find and download the VPN app for smart TVs. Search for NordVPN or Surfshark application in the App Store or Play Store and download the app
  3. Sign up or log in to your account. Purchase a subscription plan if you haven’t already and log in to your account
  4. Find a remote server and connect there. Look for a server in a location that has the streaming platform libraries you want and click connect
  5. Unblock streaming services. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the content you want

An alternative way to watch geo-restricted content on Samsung TV

It’s understandable if all of the aforementioned VPN setup ways sound a bit confusing to you. Configuring your router or activating Smart DNS can be a bit of a hassle. However, there are some very non-technical and simple alternatives to setting up a VPN on your Samsung TV. You could do one of the following:

  1. Connect to a VPN server on your PC and use an HDMI cable to stream geo-restricted content. This way, the connection will be secured, and you’ll be able to unlock Netflix’s or any other streaming platform’s libraries from anywhere in the world.
  2. Connect to a VPN on your phone and start screen mirroring. This has to be ultimately the easiest way to stream any content on Samsung TV through a VPN connection.

Do we recommend a free VPN for Samsung Smart TV

No, we don’t recommend a free VPN for Samsung TV. They can't unlock geo-restricted content like premium VPNs can. Free VPNs don't offer the same streaming support and only provide a limited number of server locations. Moreover, free VPNs might not have strong security measures and could even contain malware, putting all connected devices at risk.

However, premium VPNs often provide free trials and money-back guarantees with their paid plans, making them trustworthy choices as they offer robust features to attract customers. We recommend choosing a premium service to avoid speed issues, data tracking, annoying ads, and potential cyber threats.

  • NordVPN – market-leading VPN provider with robust security features. If you have an Android device, you can enjoy a 7-day trial for free. If not, you can opt for the 30-day money-back guarantee instead.
  • Surfshark – top VPN provider with fast speeds and unlimited connections. You can try out the service for free for 7 days by downloading the app from the Android or iOS app stores. Alternatively, you can opt for the 30-day money-back guarantee for a longer testing period.

What content can I unblock with a Samsung Smart TV VPN

Depending on the VPN, you’ll be able to unblock numerous streaming services and shows. Changing your location on a VPN to a region where the service is available will let you enjoy the content that is not available in your region.

Here are some of the most popular streaming services that you can unblock with a VPN:

I'm using NordVPN and the process as described above does not work.

I get the following message:

"SmartDNS couldn't be activated
It looks like your IP address is IPv6, which isn't supported by our systems yet."
Cybernews Team
prefix 1 year ago
Hi there! You can try disabling the SmartDNS feature in the account site and then enabling it again and activating it. Then you would need to change DNS addresses in the TV settings as well. Also, we highly recommend turning off the VPN when setting up the DNS in the account site, as the user's IPv4 has to be whitelisted. If that does not work, try disabling IPv6 on the router manually. Head over to router settings and browse to check if disabling IPv6 is available. Hope this helps!
